Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 'I don't know who my parents are. In the orphanage I was brought up in, the emphasis was on self survival . one would come up with different approaches to solving life's problems.' David Bussau, 'Opportunity International'When David was left shivering at the end of a dusty road leading to a New Zealand orphanage at the age of nine it seemed his prospects could not have been bleaker, yet somehow this scared little boy managed to not only survive but flourish. At the age of fifteen David set up a his first hot dog stand at the local football ground; by 35 he was a multi-millionaire and the owner of a highly successful construction company in Sydney. However making money for its own sake proved hollow reward for David and when Cyclone Tracy decimated Darwin in 1974 it also launched David in a whole new direction. In a voluntary capacity he took a team of tradesmen, along with his wife and two very young daughters, to Darwin to help in the rebuilding program. The experience opened his eyes, got him thinking and changed his life.David divested himself of all his companies, poured his money into a philanthropic family trust and headed, again with family in tow, to Indonesia to help rebuilt a tornado-torn village. Ultimately this led to Opportunity International, a major global aid organisation co-founded by David and operating today in thirty eight countries. Opportunity International is credited with revolutionizing overseas aid through the principles of micro enterprise development' - offering small repayable loans to the poor so they can start and grow their own small businesses. Once criticised for trying to inflict capitalism on the poor, today the World Bank and international aid agencies applaud the visionary nature of Bussau's principles. Back home in Sydney, he has a family of his own - a loving wife, two grown daughters and five grandchildren - that David is devoted to. Along with the global tragedy David confronts constantly the Bussau family has not been without their personal challenges. Yet David believes, in a strange way, it was his emotionally and physically deprived background that actually enabled him to achieve all that he has in both his personal and professional lives. And it is clear that the lines between the two will always be blurred. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Condition: Good. Presenting a set of analyses from the National Social Science Survey this book explores a range of questions about the attitudes, values and behaviour of the Australian public. The authors have aimed to produce a book which is of interest to scholars and general readers alike. The topics covered include attitudes towards moral issues such as abortion and foreign aid, views on economic policy and the political system in general, political ideology, access to higher education and attitudes associated with different educational backgrounds, discrimination against immigrants, female participation in the workforce and the content of work, happiness and satisfaction with life, and religious beliefs and the Church. The National Social Science Survey is considered to be the most comprehensive national sample survey of social and political attitudes ever undertaken in Australia, and in addition to updating some earlier work with fresh evidence for the 1980s, the book presents a number of completely new analyses of topics that have not until now been subject to systematic analysis of this sort. Jonathan Kelley is the director of the National Social Science Survey, which is conducted by the Research School of Social Sciences at ANU. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. How does our society make it possible that some men will be violent to the women they love?, Jan Horsfall. The Presence of the Past investigates patriarchal structures and practices which ipinge on the lives of men and women and either facilitate male privilege or work against female equality. Implicit in Jan Horsfall's question is the belief that both vilence and masculinities are socially constructed; the book provides some answers to this question. Horsfall's approach is both sociological and feminist, and a link is made between a range of different bodies of literature, thus raising the phenomenon above the level of individeual biology of psychology, and locating it in the broader social context, drawing out the links between violence, gender constructions and power relations. It focuses resolutely on men, and many of the connections made are new or have hitherto been intellectually marginalized. The law, the social security tax system, the employment/unemployment wage system and male ideologies which are embedded in professional practices are all implicated. The Presence of the Past also examines spousal power relations and the way emotional distance between fathers and sons creates low self-esteem and insecurities - characteristics typical of men who are violent towards women. Men with high emotional-dependency needs abrogate parental responsibilities, displaying behavioural patterns typical of incest perpetrators and rapists. While such men deny responsibility for their behaviour, women are powerless to stop their violence. It challenges men to be brave enough to begin taking responsibility for their actions and inactions, individually and collectively. The Presence of the Past offers suggestions for the way ahead. It is, ultimately, a positive book. Jan Horsfall is Senior Lecturer in Community Health at the University College of Northern Victoria. This book is intended for students and researchers in gender studies and sociology. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Condition: Good. 'Warning: this ain't no recipe book! But Jess's real, raw and often roaringly funny tales will nourish your soul. You'll devour it! And ask for seconds!' - Sarah Harris 'J-Ro's exuberance for this wonderful, sometimes messy and at times chaotic journey through life jumps joyfully out of each page. She's honest. She's disorganised. And she's got a heart of gold. Viva la Crap Housewife!' - Samantha Armytage Why not cut the crap, take the pressure off, and admit to the moments, days, weeks and months when the wheels fall off? In this fabulously funny, down-to-earth book, Diary of a Crap Housewife, Jessica Rowe writes honestly about her talent (or lack thereof) for cooking, about what's really important when it comes to mothering and family, and about her many and varied views, musings and commonsense advice on other crap housewife matters. As an added bonus, there are thirteen crap housewife recipes included, from Jessica's old favourite, spag bol, to a fresh and tasty Waldorf salad, and all so simple you can't go wrong. Being a crap housewife is a badge Jessica wears with pride, and it's a title she invites other women to embrace. The idea of crap lies in the real-life messes, hiccups, disasters and bad meals that many of us dish up and deal with every day. This mum is tired of the photos of perfectly packed school lunches, posts about gourmet family dinners eaten together at the table, and tales of neat, tidy and obedient children with smoothly brushed hair. It's time to reset the bar. Make expectations realistic. Strive to be kind, loving, smart and funny. Perfection is not required. 'Jess Rowe may be a crap housewife but she is a great writer and an even better friend. And she's right: I can be a bit of a smart arse.' - Joe Hildebrand 'This woman has enriched my life. And if you read this book your life will be enriched with honesty and love too!' - Denise Drysdale. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. Paperback. Condition: Fair. In 1886, a nervous young lawyer and aspiring writer met the editor of a radical new paper to discuss the possibility of publishing some poetry. He thought his 'fractured verses' would not stand the test of time. The editor believed otherwise and in the years that followed, Banjo Paterson became Australia's most-loved and influential poet.In a life that took him from a bush boyhood to the battlefields of South Africa and the turmoil of the Great War, Banjo Paterson rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous. But the heroes of his tales were ordinary folk bushmen, battlers, swaggies and soldiers. He told their stories of humour, tragedy and triumph set against a landscape that is both grindingly harsh and stunningly beautiful, and his words rolled off Australian tongues for generations. From the political upheaval captured in 'Waltzing Matilda' to the wistful longing for the bush in 'Clancy of the Overflow', Banjo follows the life and inspirations of AB Paterson. We meet the men and women who shaped the young Australian nation as it shook off its convict beginnings to embrace its own place on the world stage and who defined our national character today.
