Soft cover. Condition: Fine. Wrappers. From the library of the author, with the Gascoyne library book-label. Cover portrait of Gascoyne by Lucian Freud, 1943. Simon Callow describes Night Thoughts as "one of the most striking achievements of one of the most individual English poets of the century". Douglas Cleverdon commissioned the poem for the Third Programme in 1953; it was broadcast on 7 December 1955, and first published by André Deutsch in 1956. Callow was first struck by David Gascoyne on finding "Ecce Homo" in Penguin Modern Poets 17. He then witnessed him reading, with Stephen Spender, at the Round House, "huge eyes framed and forward-staring, mouth sensually fastidious, formal suit offset by a bow-tie of floppy raffishness, only his fingers, restlessly wandering over and over his own text as if it were in Braille, [betraying] any nervousness he may have felt". Callow read all Gascoyne's work he could find, and then included a group of his poems for a British Council reading in Paris - on a night when the author himself happened to be in the audience.
