Hobbs commanded the 1st AIF's 1st Divisional Artillery, providing maximum support to the infantry on Gallipoli. On the Western Front, he commanded the gunners with similar gusto. Towards the end of 1916, he was given command of 5th Australian Division, replacing the disliked, incompetent McCay. Almost immediately Hobbs - a leader who cared for the well-being of his men - changed the thinking within the division. He commanded the division, with distinction, for nearly two years as it took part in some of the most difficult battles - including second Bullecourt and Peronne. But it was at Villers-Bretonneux that he established a reputation as a top Australian general. After the Armistice, he was promoted to lieutenant-general and took over the Australian Corps.

He recalls how his men prepared for an unknown mission, which was about to be undertaken without any real understanding of the volatile situation in South East Asia at the time. Periods of isolation and boredom were interrupted by tension and fear, and there were occasions of significant danger as HMAS Hawk sailed the mine-strewn reefs of north Borneo, often coming within range of Indonesian heavy guns. Includes nominal list 1965-1966.

Hard cover dust wrapper, xix/183pp, b&w photos. A new copy. Melbourne University Regiment approached the centenary of its foundation (2010) as part of an Army changed beyond recognition in the previous hundred years. Despite reorganisations, resource shortages and vagaries of policy, it has continued its production of leaders for all three services and the civil community with success, professionalism and a unique flair. The Regiment has never fought as a formed unit and its colours show no battle honours, although MUR graduates and present members have served and frequently distinguished themselves in, every major commitment of Australia's armed forces since Federation. Past members include two Governors-General, two Prime Ministers and a Leader of the Opposition, three state Premiers, five Governors and a Lieutenant Governor of Victoria, two full generals and five Major- or Lieutenant Generals (including three Chiefs of Reserves), and over ten thousand officers for the services. The Regiment has consistently played its part in the national defence and in shaping the attitudes of its community to the frequently-vexed question of participation in the process.

Bowler of Gallipoli: Witness to the Anzac Legend. Dr Frank Glen's book provides a study of the only New Zealander to serve on the Staff Corps of ANZAC at Gallipoli in 1915. Glen traces the career of a sensitive thoughtful, efficient and courageous officer - Lieutenant-Colonel Edmund Bowler. As a Beach Landing Officer, Corps Provost Marshal and as the first Anzac Beach Commander on Gallipoli, Bowler was in a prime position to fully observe the campaign as it progressed. However, Bowler paid the price for telling the truth about the shortcomings of the high command and he was overlooked for any awards. This book is also about ANZAC and the great fight for the Dardanelles and will be of interest to Australians and New Zealanders. Bowler was also the officer in charge of the Provosts during the infamous and contentious Haret el Wasser riot in Cairo. Weight 0.5 g Size 255 mm by 186 mm.
