This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -When the phrase 'Do you remember ' is uttered in Bay City, it is usually followed by the name of a hotel, restaurant, business, or building. Slowly, many parts of local history have been lost to the sands of time. Fire took many, followed by condemnations and the inevitable advance of progress. An empty lot may be all that remains of a once-prominent structure, but sometimes a new landmark emerges. In the case of one famous address at Center and Water Streets, the Wenonah Hotel rose out of the ashes of the Fraser House, another prominent facade. Seven decades later, the Wenonah, too, succumbed to fire; out of those ashes rose the Delta College Planetarium, a third-generation landmark. Photographs help residents remember, though each person who experienced something firsthand has his or her own distinct connection with these pieces of lost Bay City. 130 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Although Boone County is one of the smallest counties in Illinois, it is rich in larger-than-life stories that grew from its prairies, forests, and streams. Its history includes a king of the hobos, a huge wheel of cheese, and a business leader who manufactured some of the best sewing machines and bicycles ever built in the United States. From the 1830s to the 1940s, Boone County rode booms and busts while steadily growing and attracting new residents with diverse backgrounds. To understand today's Boone County, it is necessary to look to the past. Images of America: Belvidere and Boone County focuses on the first 100 years of the community's history. Readers can learn about how the popular county fair got started, look at historic images of the county's first pioneers, and take a nostalgic trip back to the days of swimming at Marshall Beach. 130 pp. Englisch.

William Ragan purchased the land around the Des Moines Valley Railroad bed owned by Cyrus W. Fisher in Walnut Township. A plat map was drawn, and Waukee began. The Des Moines Valley Railroad was completed in June 1869, and Waukee was incorporated in 1878. Work, family, and church were the centers of life, and agriculture was predominant in Walnut Township. The Harris Coal Mine opened in 1920 and closed in 1928. The Shuler Coal Mine, opened in 1921, employed 500 men and closed in 1949. Community events are still held at the historic Triangle. Waukee's first school, facilitated in 1870, was held in the Presbyterian church. Today, Waukee is the fastest-growing school district in Iowa. On April 16, 2014, the Waukee City Council unveiled plans for Kettlestone, a 1,500-acre mixed-use development that will include an outdoor town center, housing, retail space, green space, trails, and an amphitheater. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Vilano and the North Beaches are perhaps most known as small, eclectic beach communities within sight of St. Augustine, the nation's oldest city. For centuries, people have flocked to this coastal playground by horse-drawn trolley, ferry, and more recently Florida's Coastal Highway, State Road A1A. They came for recreation, jobs, and sunny weather in the late 1800s, when Henry Flagler attracted Northerners to his 'new and novel' hotels. Visitors were excited to learn the ocean was just across the bay. Tourism provided jobs for settlers, like the Minorcan, Usina, and Capo families, offering fun excursions. Nowhere else were horse-drawn trolleys delivering beachgoers across sand dunes to the sea. Like Ponce de Leon, who was smitten with the pristine beaches, the area's story is one of developing the land along an isolated coastline. Road and bridge construction after World War II encouraged migration as well as visitors to the beaches, fish camps, and Art Deco motor courts. This nostalgic 1950s look remains today, attracting those curious about the region's multicultural history.' 130 pp. Englisch.

Opened in 1902, the Mount Beacon Incline Railway served locals, revelers, sightseers, and vacationers for nearly 100 years, riding them to the pinnacle of Mount Beacon for a 75-mile panoramic view, among other attractions. The incline was constructed when trains were king, and undeniably it emerged as a grand tourist destination; its notoriety was widespread, even earning the prized position as background of the majestic Empire State flag, as seen today. Eventually, the railway ceased operation and was shuttered. Today, with the planned restorative work of the Mount Beacon Incline Railway Restoration Society (MBIRRS), the prospect of reinstallation remains high. Along the Mount Beacon Incline Railway is a record to the celebrated history, preservation, and future of the railway in its natural setting. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Dayton's history begins with Nevada's first gold discovery in July 1849. It started with a California-bound pack train, led by trail guide Abner Blackburn, setting up camp at the mouth of a canyon that drained into the Carson River. While waiting for the snow to melt in the Sierra, Blackburn went prospecting and dug gold from the creek bed. The news of his discovery spread, and prospectors rushed to the site they called Gold Canon--today's Dayton. In May 1851, diarist Lucena Pfuffer Parsons, traveling with a wagon train, camped at the site and reported about 200 miners living in the canyon. She noted that they were finding enough gold to trade for supplies. In 1859, after working their way up the canyon, miners discovered a large silver and gold deposit known as the Comstock Lode. This discovery led Nevada to statehood in 1864.' 130 pp. Englisch.

One of the area's major lakes looks exactly like a slice of ham, with an island as the ham bone, thus the name. In 1856, a town named Glen Carey, Scottish for 'Beautiful Valley,' was formed southwest of the lake. Seven or eight homes were built, but a prairie fire burned them out. In 1866, Mads Gilbertson, a native of Norway, was the first permanent settler; other Scandinavians followed. Early settlers found the soil well suited for farming and developed churches, schools, and commercial centers. Farmers raised pigs, turkeys, cattle, and horses, along with corn, wheat, potatoes, and other vegetables and fruit. Ham Lake became the sod-producing capital of Minnesota. Eventually, the town subdivided those farms and grew housing developments--the most profitable crop yet. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Around Hartwick depicts the history of the rural Hartwick Township at the geographical heart of Otsego County, nestled along the Otego Valley between western hills and the Susquehanna River. Named for John Christopher Hartwick, an itinerant German preacher with the dream of a 'New Jerusalem' church and school, the township became the site of the first Lutheran Theological Association in America. Abundant water sources powered large woolen, cotton, and paper mills in Clintonville, Toddsville, and South Hartwick. Fertile land produced farm crops, including a contribution to the highest yield of hops in the world. With extension of the electric trolley north through the Otego Valley to the Mohawk Valley, the Hartwick hamlet prospered as the site of railway headquarters, central carbarns, and the sole power source for this vital transportation link. With the advent of the mechanical age and changing economics, mills relocated, the railway ceased, and farm production declined. Today, the township enjoys renewed prosperity with the influence of history museums and baseball from nearby Cooperstown. 130 pp. Englisch.

Their histories inseparably intertwined, these two towns formed a larger community supporting the needs of local settlers and industry. Scotia, constructed by the Pacific Lumber Company in the 1880s, stands as a pristine example of the once-prevalent company town in America. The small farming community of Rio Dell flourished along with its sister city and grew to accommodate the needs of an expanding workforce in Humboldt's redwood lumber industry. Where Scotia was orderly and tightly controlled by Pacific Lumber Co. management, Rio Dell developed a reputation for its remote setting, rowdy lumbermen, and bootlegged whiskey. 130 pp. Englisch.

The area has produced some amazingly rugged and tough people who have called Murray County home for generations. Images of America: Rural Life in Murray County tells the story of how they lived, what they produced on their farms, how they entertained themselves, and how they learned to improve their communities. In the early 1930s, when one of the most severe droughts on record produced the Dust Bowl and the nation was in a state of economic depression, the beginning of the Oklahoma A&M Cooperative Extension took root in Murray County, bringing economic change, improving living conditions, and providing educational opportunities to the rural farm families of Murray County. 130 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -People have called the land near the Ocmulgee River in present-day central Georgia home for a long time, perhaps as many as 17,000 years, and each successive group has left its mark on the landscape. Mississippian-era people erected the towering Great Temple Mound and other large earthworks around 1,000 years ago. In the late 17th century, Ocmulgee flourished as a center of trade between the Creek Indians and their English neighbors. In the 19th century, railroads did irreparable damage to the site in the name of progress and profit, slicing through it twice. Preservation efforts bore fruit in the 1930s, when Ocmulgee National Monument was created. Since then, people from all over the world have visited Ocmulgee. They come for many reasons, but they invariably leave with a reverence for the place and the people who built it hundreds of years ago and those who have maintained it in recent decades. 130 pp. Englisch.

Established in 1828 on the fall line of the Chattahoochee River, where the Piedmont Plateau meets the Coastal Plain, Columbus owes much of its success to the river; yet, there is much more to the city and its identity. Images of America: Columbus uses vintage images to explore the city's past in an effort to capture 'what progress has preserved.' This photographic collection travels back through time to take an intimate look at how Columbus transformed from a frontier town into the redefined and revitalized city that it has become. These photographs capture businesses, churches, busy street corners, and other city landmarks, as well as more personal glimpses of individuals, families, and homes. By revisiting the heart of the city, readers are offered a chance to easily imagine Columbus's past as if it were still alive today. 130 pp. Englisch.

White and black migrants from older parts of the United States joined emigrants from Ireland and Germany to create a diverse, flourishing, and at times contentious community. Railroads, the Whitewater Canal, and the National Road laid the foundations for economic growth before the Civil War, and Richmond grew steadily in population and prosperity from the Civil War until the late 20th century. Local folklore claims that at one time the city had more millionaires in proportion to population than any other place in the United States. While erecting remarkable homes and buildings, founding enduring institutions like schools, churches, and museums, and supporting at one time as many as six newspapers, Richmond produced memorable and colorful characters who left their mark not just in Richmond and Indiana, but around the United States. 130 pp. Englisch.

Harris used beech trees, elm trees, and hickory stumps to define the town's boundaries; he called it Harrisburg. The name Harrisburg was already in use elsewhere in Indiana, so Brownsburg, which paid homage to early settler James B. Brown, was selected as an alternative. Brownsburg's railroad station, located between Indianapolis and Crawfordsville, positioned the farming community for dramatic growth. As new settlers arrived, new businesses, mills, and factories also began to open. Today, Brownsburg continues to grow, and the community is known for its engineering and racing industries and its first-rate schools. 130 pp. Englisch.

Formed in 1798, the county boasted a desirable combination of rolling farmlands and favorable river frontage that was vital for early pioneers as they moved west to settle the frontier. The county's location along river and shipping routes between Cincinnati and Louisville provided both a bustling economy and a rural lifestyle for its residents. The decline in river traffic and the construction of Interstate 71 in the 1960s largely left the county behind and dramatically impacted the local economy. As homage to its pioneering roots, Gallatin County has revitalized its economy with a busy marina, two major employers (Gallatin Steel and Dorman Products), and the spectacular Kentucky Speedway while retaining its rural historical charm. 130 pp. Englisch.

All of that changed in the summer and fall of that year, when two prospecting teams came to the valley to stake their claims, some of which went on to produce millions of dollars of silver. Within five years, Aspen was home to over 20,000 individuals including miners, lawyers, families, businessmen, and even prostitutes. Aspen's fortune was tied to silver. More importantly, its fate was ultimately tied to the Sherman Silver Purchase Act of 1890, which required the US government to buy 4.5 million ounces of silver per month. From 1890 to 1893, the Sherman Act kept Aspen alive and growing. With the repeal of the act, Aspen began a slow, painful decline. This book covers the years of Aspen's discovery, through the years of decline, and into what is known as the 'Quiet Years.' 130 pp. Englisch.

Fifty years later, the community of Nebraska City was born on that very spot. For many decades, the community served as a jumping-off point for travelers bound farther westward as thousands of wagon trains departed every year. By the late 1800s, the city became known for another reason: the home of Arbor Day. First introduced by Nebraska City resident J. Sterling Morton in 1872, Arbor Day became Nebraska's holiday and is now celebrated worldwide. The 1900s saw a decline in the transportation industry but a rise in manufacturing and the growing and canning of produce. Today, historical tourism makes up the economic lifeblood of this small but thriving community. 130 pp. Englisch.

Lower Saucon Township was chartered in 1743, when it was still a part of Bucks County. The township also included South Bethlehem until 1865, and Hellertown until 1872. The industry would grow to include more than 60 quarries and operations around the cape, becoming the second-largest economic force in the area behind fishing. Hundreds were employed as quarrymen, stonecutters, paving cutters, and finishers. Cape Ann was particularly well fitted for the pursuit of granite as its rocky hills and shores afforded a comparatively inexhaustible source of supply, and its splendid shipping facilities gave the advantage of quick and economical transportation to market by sea and land. The industry eventually declined, and by 1930, most quarries had gone out of business because of labor strikes and low demand. Today, most of these quarries are filled with rainwater and springwater, and many are used as reservoirs for the surrounding communities. 130 pp. Englisch.

Philo Farnsworth, credited with inventing television, performed some of his earliest experiments at the Franklin Institute and at 1230 Mermaid Lane. Those experiments led to the city's first television station, W3XE. Channel 3 was also the first local station in the country to broadcast in color. WCAU-TV Channel 10 constructed the first building in the world designed specifically as a television station. WFIL created one of the most iconic shows in television history, American Bandstand, as well as Action News, which has helped Channel 6 stay on top of the ratings for most of the last 40 years. Dick Clark, Ed McMahon, Ernie Kovacs, Tom Snyder, David Brenner, Maury Povich, Kelly Ripa, Brian Williams, and others are among those who have worked in Philadelphia television throughout its history. 130 pp. Englisch.

However, he never set foot in Norton--he died six years before the township was organized in 1818. Early settlers, the first of whom were James Robinson and John Cahow, carved their way through the wilderness to build on this fertile land. In its early form, Norton included seven small hamlets: Loyal Oak, Western Star, Sherman, Johnson's Corners, Norton Center, Hametown, and New Portage. Each hamlet had its own unique shops, taverns, blacksmiths, and mills. These communities were home to familiar local names like Seiberling, VanHyning, Harris, Miller, Oplinger, and Breitenstine. By 1961, Norton had become recognized as a village, and by 1968 its growth warranted the designation of city. Early businesses, local schools and churches, aerial views, accidents, and intrigue can all be found within the pages of Images of America: Norton. 130 pp. Englisch.

Dr. Francis West Lewis, a prominent Philadelphia physician, was deeply disturbed by the appallingly high mortality rate among infants and children in his city, a result of the poor sanitary conditions in the urban slums that arose in great numbers during the Industrial Revolution. After visiting London for the opening of Great Ormond Street Hospital, Dr. Lewis was inspired to open the first children's hospital in the United States in Philadelphia and advertised in the Public Ledger, 'Reception of children suffering from acute diseases and accidents will be received free of charge.' The Children's Hospital continued to prosper and lead the advancement of children's health by creating many of the nation's first pediatric training programs and leading in the discovery of vaccines, lifesaving medical equipment, and pioneering treatments. Today, the hospital enjoys international recognition and continues to contribute to the advancement of children's health through a three-part mission of patient care, education, and research. 130 pp. Englisch.

In the late 1800s, the area's temperate climate drew many of San Francisco's elite to build lavish summer estates in town. During World War I, the area played host to the Army's Camp Fremont, and when World War II came to town, Menlo Park was home to Dibble Army Hospital. The city grew up along El Camino Real, and its downtown retail district centers around Santa Cruz Avenue. Today, Menlo Park is a suburban oasis of beautiful homes with a thriving business community that incorporates a number of leading high-tech companies. 130 pp. Englisch.
