"'I know for my own part that I have no programme, only the inexplicable longing to grasp what I see and feel, and to find for it the purest expression.' The words of German Expressionist Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, co-founder of the 'Br cke' movement in Dresden, convey the essence of the revolutionary movement in the arts which overthrew the stifling academicism of Kaiser Wilhelm's Germany and led in the years between 1900 and 1914 to an amazing upsurge of creative activity. The story of this decisive and immensely rich contribution to the history of twentieth-century art is told here largely in the vivid and intensely revealing words of the artists themselves." - Publisher. Altai. ~ 54 illustrations in full color / 141 illustrations in black and white ~The fabulous golden treasures from the ancient burial~grounds of southern Russia and Siberia have captivated man's imagination since they were discovered early in the eighteenth century. Today we know that they were the work of Scythians, Sarmatians and other peoples who roamed the steppes between the sixth century B. C. and the early Christian Era. Some of these tribes were mentioned by the Greek historian Herodotus. Recent excavations, especially those carried out by Soviet archeologists since 1945, have greatly enlarged our knowledge of these peoples ~ of their way of life, and, above all, of their rich art in "animal style." Graves buried for thousands of years beneath the ice of the Altai Mountains have at last revealed their secrets, and the material they have yielded can compare with the rich Imperial collections in the Hermitage Museum at Leningrad. New light has been thrown upon the fruitful contacts between these fierce nomadic horsemen and neighboring settled peoples: Chinese in the east, Persians in the south, Greeks in the west. Professor Jettmar's scholarly yet lively narrative leads us in the footsteps of the robbers who looted these graves and of the first scientific explorers. He describes closely the works they found: jewelry in gold and bronze, precious silks, weapons, and horses' harness; and he puts forward some intriguing ideas about the significance of this art for later developments in eastern Europe and Asia.

It covers the period from the first prehistoric cultures in what is now Persia up to Sassanid times. Sculpture, pottery, architecture, metalwork, and the minor arts are all treated against the general historical and cultural background, and the result is a lively narrative which will appeal to the general reader as well as to the specialist. Professor Porada discusses those features of Iranian art which seem to have endured through the centuries. Animals were favored as subjects. Their bodies were often transformed into severely formal compositions which nevertheless possess a mysterious life of their own. In them the beholder enjoys pure form and its enlivenment. Information is based on the most recent scientific excavations carried out by America, France, and other nations working with the Archaeological Service of Iran.
