Paperback. Condition: Fine. 112 pages, illustrations (some colour), colour map; 29 cm. Firm binding, clean inside copy. "The Allied Occupation witnessed American involvement in virtually every aspect of life in Japan, forever changing the relationship between the countries. Numerous studies addressing politics, economic and constitutional development, and education reform have been published but very little has appeared concerning the conditions of the visual arts during this formative era. As the world marks a half century since the events of the Occupation, it is time to reflect on the creative environment that profoundly affected the cultural life of the country. The Confusion Era: Art and Culture in Japan During the Allied Occupation, 1945 -- 1952 brings together an eminent, lively group of authors for a critical exploration of the achievements and experiments of the time.Film historian and writer Donald Richie probes the ironies, missteps, and politics of the Occupation censors and their new colleagues in the Japanese cultural community. Citing incidents both famous and infamous, he deftly touches on painting, theater, and film. Scholar Keiko McDonald examines the conflicted and provocative evolution of women's roles in film while Linda Ehrlich discusses two films by Japanese directors looking back on the period. In a revealing look at nine visual artists who not only suffered reversals of fortune during the war but also a fundamental confusion of values in the aftermath, author Emiko Yamanishi describes the caution and experimentation that characterized the era. Ranging in purpose from soliciting donations of clothes for returning refugees to promoting cosmetics and "Peace Cigarettes", a selection of posters forms a vibrant portfolio assembled by James Howard Fraser, author of several books onJapanese graphic design. Director emeritus of the Cleveland Museum of Art and distinguished author Sherman Lee provides a telling first person account of his experiences during those difficult years. His job with the Arts and Monuments Division of SCAP (Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers) in Tokyo led him to inspection visits of temple sites and art collections all over Japan at a time of intense national scrutiny. This compelling and beautiful volume promises to be an essential addition to the appreciation and study of the art and culture of Japan and to the literature of Japanese-American relations." - Publisher. CONTENTS: The Occupied Arts, by Donald Richie; Painting in the Time of "Heavy Hands", by Emiko Yamanashi; Erasing and Refocusing: Two Films of the Occupation, by Linda C. Ehrlich; Whatever Happened to Passive Suffering? Women on Screen, by Keiko I. McDonald; Don't Sell Salt Illegally: Posters in Occupied Japan, by James Howard Fraser; My Work in Japan: Arts and Monuments, 1946-1948, by Sherman E. Lee. Size: 4to.

Quarto, softbound (slick, full-color illus. wrappers with black spine, white letters), slick pages, vii + 261 pp. Fine. From cover flap: Joe Price purchased his first Japanese painting in the 1950s, under the influence of Frank Lloyd Wright. Over the next five decades, he and his wife Etsuko would collect more than 200 masterpieces from the Edo period (1615 -1868), a time when Japan had isolated itself from the rest of the world. Curiously, during that period of national seclusion, independent and diversely creative artists flourished as never before. Today, the Etsuko and Joe Price Collection is placed among the finest in the world. The detailed patterns evident in many of the works reflect the high regard artists of the period held for textile designers. The expressiveness in the eyes of the various animals, demons, deities, and people depicted suggest that they all inhabited the same world rather than different spiritual levels -- the prominent religious theory of the time. The animal world becomes more animated, landscapes have their own light, spirits are alive, past becomes present, evoking a mood that suggests familiarity with all worlds, above and below. At the collection's core are screens, hanging scrolls, fans, and some of the finest examples of the distinctive, hauntingly preternatural renderings of animal life by Ito Jakuchu (1716 - 1800), one of the most innovative and imaginative of Kyoto's eighteenth-century painters. Jackucho's prominence in recent decades has been greatly aided by the Prices' intensive interest in his work. Japanese Masterworks from the Price Collection features 225 full color and 114 black and white images: together they represent the rich aesthetic diversity that characterized the Edo period. Essays by leading scholars of Japense painting and architect Frank O. Gehry put both the collection and the collector in context and provide insight into the wonders of Japanese art. Issued in conjunction with a 2002-2003 exhibition "of Japanese prints from the Edu period (1615-1868). They come from a colelction of more than three hundred ukioy-e prints acquired by Anne van Biema since the 1960s, and represent her personal choices from the tens of thousands of woodblock prints published in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The prints selected for this publication and exhibition reveal how artistic imagination and superlative technical skill combined to create compelling images of the actors and courtesans of the urban demimonde, legendary heroes and villains, classical and contemporary literary themes. and the natural world." (dj) With thematic essays by Ann Yonemura, C. Andrew Gerstle, Elizabeth de Sabato Swinton, and Joshua A. Mostow. The main illustrated and annotated catalogue showcases 133 prints in full color; additional entries in the collection are included as small listings with BW illus.
