Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. "A picture book in which the sparkling text in verse and prose is complemented by brilliant and witty drawings and cartoons and photographs, this volume will give lasting pleasure to a wide audience. That it is based on a historical perspective to show the development and changing moods and preoccupations of Australian humorous writers in no way detracts from its universal appeal. What we were and what we have become: a fascinating study in social history designed to entertain rather than instruct. Who would have known Marcus Clarke as a humorist, and who would have come across Joseph Furphy's unforgettable picture of Moses as seen by the illiterate bushie Dixon? Of course we have the old favorites Paterson, Lawson, Dennis, 'Kodak'; then we come on to such writers as Frank Hardy, Joan Lindsay, Ross Campbell, Alexander Macdonald, leading on to moderns like Frank Moorhouse, Barry Humphries, Phillip Adams, Gabrielle Lord, and many others." 310 pages. Minor bumping to top and bottom of DJ and text spine, elsewise a bright, clean, tight, scholar/collector-worthy copy! *NOTE: Additional shipping required for out-of-U.S. shipment. LRCA2.

Soft Covers. Condition: VG+. No Jacket. Photos, Cartoons, Documents (illustrator). 1st. Sub-titled "An Informal Account of the Waihi Strike 1912" this book recalls one of the most controversial and tragic strikes in the history of NZ. The dispute lasted six months and ended when many of the strikers and their families were forced out of the town. It wasa notable strike for many reasons --- the formation of of what became the Labour Party in NZand the NZ Federation of Labour. It saw the beginning of political careers for a number of union officials and supporters of the strikers, who later became leaders in the earlier NZ Labour administrations, several appointed cabinet ministers, one NZ prime minister and another premier of NSW. The strike had wide repercussions for the town of Waihi, where emnities between strikers and strike-breakers smoldered on, with the author observing 68 years after the strike that "stir the dust at Waihi and the past confronts you." This is a fine book on a distasteful episode in NZ's industrial history. First edition of 1982 from OUP, 176 pages including 14 pages of source notes, excellent collection of b/w photograps throughout, some cartoons. documents. Pictorial card covers VG+ with light wear to front edges, internally NF, no inscriptions, unobtrusive, light vertical crease centre rear cover.
