The national day of a country should reflect its values, ambitions, and aspirations. Australia Day should celebrate the diversity of our indigenous and migrant population. It should be an occasion for all Australians to celebrate.

Trade Paperback. Condition: New. 1st Edition. MINT - a NEW copy. 144 pages. History & the Poet is a series of essays on contemporary Australian poetry. In language clear and precise, Robert Wood poses philosophical and ideological questions that matter for poetry now. History & the Poet offers an entry point to a rich and complex world, and is a compelling vision of what poetry can become. It includes discussion of Wood's own experiences and identity as part of a broader conversation about who we are and why poetry matters.

Trade Paperback. Condition: New. 1st Edition. MINT - a NEW copy. 143 pages. In a society in which almost everyone can afford a car, a computer and a flat screen TV, does inequality still matter? Does it matter that some are fabulously wealthy if almost all are reasonably well off? Where Did Fair Go? argues that it does still matter. Inequality in a society has effects on health. In many respects in runs contrary to principles of justice. But perhaps most significant of all it its effect on democracy. Great wealth brings with it a power of being heard in public discussion not available to the average member of society. Wealth gives power that has not been democratically conferred. A degree of equality in society in necessary for the health of democracy.

Trade Paperback. Condition: New. 1st Edition. MINT - a NEW copy. Robust, professional packaging and tracking provided for all parcels. 245 pages. In an extraordinary move, in 1797, the British government pressed a small group of French and German prisoners of war into the New South Wales Corps, gave them firearms and placed them as guards on a ship carrying sixty-six convict women and two convict men to New South Wales. The result was a mutiny some months into the voyage in which the captain of the Lady Shore was killed and the fates of all of those on board were tied together when the ship was taken to South America. The true story of what happened to those on board is told here in detail for the first time, in part through the eyes of sailor George Drinkald whose fascinating and articulate first-hand testimony has recently emerged.

Who could imagine that finding a suitable pair of football boots would prove almost impossible for women and girls in the 1970s? The focus of the women's liberation movement was fought in the streets, in universities, in workplaces and in the home. We add the football field to these sites of protest and empowerment for individual women. We follow the Australian and New Zealand national players - schoolgirls, factory workers, university graduates and professionals - as they navigate the male-dominated world of football. Robust, professional packaging and tracking provided for all parcels.

In the 1970s-1990s, with limited material resources, an abundance of originality and style, and seemingly unlimited creative energy, a group of young people helped transform the cultural landscape of inner Sydney. They recast the image of Australian fashion, linked with fashion and identity politics, established theā lookā of the Sydney Gay Mardi Gras, and reclaimed the urban. Sally Gray describes a restlessly creative, culturally influential group of friends and collaborators as they moved to and from Melbourne, Paris, Sydney, London, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, New York, and places in between. Four friends in particular form her central narrative: fashion designers Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson and artists Peter Tully and David McDiarmid. Their creative trajectories and interactions, their collaborations, passion and politics, continue to resonate in the present.

Dymphna Lodewyckx was a brilliant linguist who easily won prizes and scholarships but cannot be said to have pursued a career; instead, she married Manning Clark, who earned great fame as an Australian historian. Occasional translations and classes gave Dymphna much pleasure and some pride, but they were not her priority. How could they be, when she was her husband's constant research assistant and unofficial editor, as well as the mother of their six children? This was clearly her choice. Wasn't it?.

Robust, professional packaging and tracking provided for all parcels. xxxiv, 234pp. Generations of Australians have been reared on the belief that the fall of Singapore in February 1942 was a British betrayal that exposed Australia to Japanese invasion. In this book a historian, using archival records from across the globe, exposes this notion as nothing more than a myth. British authorities never gave Australia an iron-clad guarantee against enemy attack and invasion and always stressed the need for Australians to take responsibility for home defence. The causes and consequences of the refusal to heed this advice are explained in this scholarly, readable and salutary study.

Scots are renowned for leaving their homes and successfully settling elsewhere in the world. John Nicholson was no exception. As a young man in his twenties he interrupted his studies to be a lawyer and followed his elder brother to Brisbane. After five years there working with a law firm he returned to Edinburgh to become a lawyer and was admitted to practice. At the age of 29 he set out for Western Australia. There he started a law firm and became a commercial adviser in demand. The commercial community petitioned him to contest the Perth Mayoralty which he won for a term in 1914 - 15. The following year he was put up by the Nationals to fill a vacancy in the Legislative Council. From 1918 to 1941 he spent his life as a member of the Council enunciating the pathway he saw for the future of Western Australia. He worked to place the State on a sound commercial footing in Depression and the onset of World War II. In addition, John and his wife established the Red Cross in the State as well as developing care for veterans and playing a leadership role in many other organisations, the work of which continues today. At the end of his life he had well earned the name of 'Honest John'.
