Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Shannon, David Cover (illustrator). First Trade Edition Stated. 217 pages plus afterword. First Ballantine Edition September 1997 and a First Printing. Developed from the author's story Black Horses for a King which first appeared in the anthology Camelot in 1995. This fast-moving historical fantasy is about the beginnings of the British cavalry, in King Arthur's era, as recounted by a boy growing up in exciting and perilous times. McCaffrey credits a chapter in Rosemary Sutcliff's Sword At Sunset for her interest in the large black horses of King Arthur's time. In this story Lord Artos, later to rule as the legendary King Arthur, knew he could defeat his enemies if only he could find horses swift and strong enough to carry his warriors in full regalia. He sets out in search of the famed horses of the desert.

He never stopped to think that someone might be conning the con man!.
