Watt tells the story of the painful gestation and birth, tormented life, and cataclysmic death of the independent Poland of 1918~1939. He also gives the definitive account in English of the dominant figure in th is story, the Polish freedom fighter and strongman Jozef Pilsudski, whose admirers included Poland's Jews and Adolf Hitler. In the course of his riveting narrative, Watt describes the underground warfare Pilsudski waged against czarist rule; how the Poles deftly exploited World War I to achieve independence; the problems that racked the new state ~ wars with neighbors over boundaries, bitter factional strife, rural backwardness; the country's drift toward fascism; and its debacle at the hands of the Nazis, in which Poland lost its freedom but gained moral grandeur. Bitter Glory conveys all the drama in the career of Pilsudski, which was full of startling comebacks from apparent failure. After the independence movement condemned his activities as a revolutionary bandit, he retired for two years, then returned to rob a Russian train of a sizable fortune, blowing the mail car open himself with a bomb. As Poland's marshal, he saved Warsaw from the Red Army in a daring eleventh~hour maneuver that stunned the world. His 1926 coup, which made him master of Poland, seemed certain at one point to become a fiasco. Watt's afterword relates Poland's fortunes as a Nazi province and its conversion into a Soviet satellite, and his 1982 preface tells how Soviet rule began to crumble under the pressure of the Solidarity movement.
