I was invited to participate in this series and found in the invitation an opportunity to recall events going back to my early teens. The lecture was well received and its reception encouraged me to work up an expanded version. My manuscript lay dormant all these years. In the meanwhile, sufficiently many other mathematical experiences and encounters accumulated to make this little book. My 1981 lecture is the basis of the first piece: 'Napoleon's Theorem. ' Although there is a connection between the first piece and the second, the four pieces here are essentially independent. The sec ond piece, 'Carpenter and the Napoleon Ascription,' has as its object a full description of a certain type of scholar-storyteller (of whom I have known and admired several). It is a pastiche, contain ing a salad bar selection blended together by my own imagination. This piece purports, as a secondary goal, to present a solution to a certain unsolved historical problem raised in the first piece. The third piece, 'The Man Who Began His Lectures with 'Namely',' is a short reminiscence of Stefan Bergman, one of my teachers of graduate mathematics. Cart an sense. Symmetric spaces, differentiated from other homogeneous manifolds by their geomet rical richness, allows the development of a deep analysis. A Personal Prehistory In 1972 I started cooperating with members of the Biodynamics Research Unit at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, which was under the direction of Earl H. Wood. At that time, their ambitious (and eventually realized) dream was to build the Dynamic Spatial Reconstructor (DSR), a device capable of collecting data regarding the attenuation of X-rays through the human body fast enough for stop-action imaging the full extent of the beating heart inside the thorax. Such a device can be applied to study the dynamic processes of cardiopulmonary physiology, in a manner similar to the application of an ordinary cr (computerized tomography) scanner to observing stationary anatomy. The standard method of displaying the information produced by a cr scanner consists of showing two-dimensional images, corresponding to maps of the X-ray attenuation coefficient in slices through the body. Our attempts to apply control theory techniques to such prob lems in several areas of science convinced us that in the need for better and more detailed models of distributed/ continuum processes in biology and mechanics lay a rich, interesting, and challenging class of fundamen tal questions. These questions, which involve science and mathematics, are typical of those arising in inverse or parameter estimation problems. In August-September 1989, a workshop (Third Workshop on Representation Theory of Lie Groups and its Applications) was held in the environs of C6rdoba, Argentina to present expositions of important recent developments in the field that would be accessible to graduate students and researchers in related fields. This volume contains articles that are edited versions of the lectures (and short courses) given at the workshop. Within representation theory, one of the main open problems is to determine the unitary dual of a real reductive group. Although this prob lem is as yet unsolved, the recent work of Barbasch, Vogan, Arthur as well as others has shed new light on the structure of the problem. The article of D. Vogan presents an exposition of some aspects of this prob lem, emphasizing an extension of the orbit method of Kostant, Kirillov. Meanwhile there exists an old example proposed by A.T. Fuller [1961) in which optimal control has an infinite number of switches on a finite-time interval. This phenomenon is called chattering. It has become increasingly clear that chattering is widespread. This book is devoted to its exploration. Chattering obstructs the direct use of Pontryagin's maximum principle because of the lack of a nonzero-length interval with a continuous control function. That is why the common experience appears misleading. It is the hidden symmetry of Fuller's problem that allows the explicit solution. Namely, there exists a one-parameter group which respects the optimal trajectories of the problem. When published in 1961, Fuller's example incited curiosity, but it was considered only 'interesting' and soon was forgotten. The second wave of attention to chattering was raised about 12 years later when several other examples with optimal chattering trajectories were 1 found. The study of this problem over an infinite time horizon shows the beautiful interplay between optimality and the qualitative properties of systems such as controllability, observability and stability. This theory is far more difficult for infinite-dimensional systems such as systems with time delay and distributed parameter systems. In the first place, the difficulty stems from the essential unboundedness of the system operator. Secondly, when control and observation are exercised through the boundary of the domain, the operator representing the sensor and actuator are also often unbounded. The present book, in two volumes, is in some sense a self-contained account of this theory of quadratic cost optimal control for a large class of infinite-dimensional systems. Volume I deals with the theory of time evolution of controlled infinite-dimensional systems. It contains a reasonably complete account of the necessary semigroup theory and the theory of delay-differential and partial differential equations. Volume II deals with the optimal control of such systems when performance is measured via a quadratic cost. It covers recent work on the boundary control of hyperbolic systems and exact controllability.
