The collected stories/essays in CHOCTALKING ON OTHER REALITIES, by Choctaw author LeAnne Howe, depict with wry humor the contradictions and absurdities that transpire in a life lived crossing cultures and borders. The result is three parts memoir, one part absurdist fiction, and one part marvelous realism. The collection begins with Howe's stint working in the bond business for a Wall Street firm as the only American Indian woman (and 'out' Democrat) in the company, then chronicles her subsequent travels, invited as an American Indian representative and guest speaker, to indigenous gatherings and academic panels in Jordan, Jerusalem, Romania, and Japan.

Softcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Literary Nonfiction. Asian American Studies. This compilation is the first comprehensive work to focus on South Asian American and South Asian immigrant women in the U.S. It represents a pioneering effort to collect the critical essays, creative works and personal histories by and about women of South Asian descent. The diverse expressions of identity and experience found here enable us to begin to see how women of South Asian origin define their positions within their respective communities, within wider interethnic networks, and within national and international social, economic, and political frameworks which impact women's lives, both in the United States and in South Asia."A brazenly contemporary approach to literature.offering South Asian women a release from modern social restrictions, allowing them to forge spiritual connections within themselves and with each other. The first collection of its kind, the editors and writers should be commended for their boldness in printing in black and white the controversial ideas of sexuality and revolution that are often forbidden."-Hinduism Today.

Softcover. Condition: Good. 2. Experimental, inventive, provocative and above all visionary, Gloria Anzaldúa's work is widely recognized among scholars of Chicano/Latino, Gay and Lesbian, Women's, Postcolonial, Ethnic and Cultural Studies as a foundational elaboration of the politics and poetics of cultural hybridity. Both Borderlands/La Frontera and Making Face/Making Soul: Haciendo Caras are all about understanding the complex and competing social, political and cultural forces that shape-sometimes quite brutally-the experiences of women of color in the U.S., and they are all about taking that understanding and mobilizing it toward creative and revisionary efforts for making social change."One of the 100 Best Books of the Twentieth Century"-Hungry Mind Review (Spring 1999)"Anzaldúa's voyage of discovery, focused on the border and the new mestiza, is a preparation for the future. The border is a bundle of contradictions and ambiguities. This hybrid crossroads is just the right kind of training ground. It is fertile area for mutations and transformations. In Borderlands/ La Frontera, Gloria Anzaldúa is our guide with an all-encompassing vision to charge the border with meaning."-The Americas Review"[She] explores in prose and poetry the murky, precarious existence of those living on the frontier between cultures and languages. . . .she meditates on the conditions of Chicanos in Anglo culture, women in Hispanic culture, and lesbians in the straight world. .a powerful document."-Library JournalA "Best of 1987" Library Journal selection."Anzaldúa's vision encompasses spiritual and experiential aspects of female power, as well as the day-to-day courage and struggle that has characterized Chicano survival."-The San Francisco Chronicle.

Softcover. Condition: Good. 3rd. Cultural Writing. Essays. Latino/Latina Studies. Rooted in Gloria Anzaldua's experience as a Chicana, a lesbian, an activist, and a writer, the groundbreaking essays and poems in this volume profoundly challenged how we think about identity. BORDERLANDS/LA FRONTERA remapped our understanding of what a "border" is, seeing it not as a simple divide between here and there, us and them, but as a psychic, social, and cultural terrain that we inhabit, and that inhabits all of us. This twentieth-anniversary edition features new commentaries from prominent activists, artists, and teachers on the legacy of Gloria Anzaldua's visionary work.

Softcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Poetry. Fiction. Native American Studies. By bringing together the voices of Native American women writers across time, regions, and tribes, this collection makes visible a dynamic tradition of women's wisdom and storytelling. From early legends to present-day fiction and poetry, this tradition emphasizes women's spiritual connection to the natural world and their contributions to tribal and familial community. Central to women's strength is the role of animal figures-Coyote, Owl, Beaver and Bear-who act as guides, helpers, and personal totems, appearing unexpectedly in the modern urban landscape as well as being a constant presence in nature. The work of more than forty authors appears in this volume, representing tribes and regions extending over most of the U.S. and parts of Canada. Among the authors included are Louise Erdrich, Joy Harjo, Leslie Marmon Silko, Paula Gunn Allen, Linda Hogan and Beth Brant, along with writers whose work appears here for the first time."THROUGH THE EYE OF THE DEER is far more than a wonderful book to read: it is a guidebook to life in the multiple world we really live in. It tells us of the many places the path of the sacred takes us, how to act when we get there, the dangers we will encounter, and how to get home."-Paula Gunn Allen.
