Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This novel is a portrait of rural life and how that way of life, which had existed for centuries in England, was eclipsed by The Great War. The announcement of hostilities in August 1914 was greeted with patriotic fervour, later Kitchener sought to boost the military with the creation of 'Pals Battalions' and Lincolnshire was no exception with the 7th, 8th and 10th Lincolns. No one could imagine the horror that awaited in France not only for the troops but also Nursing Auxiliaries drawn from every social station - all keen to serve King and Country. The story centres round two young men, each dominant in their respective family who carry their childhood feud with them onto the battlefield of the Somme. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. It was 12th September 2001. The world awoke to the grim replays of the Twin Towers disintegrating in a dust cloud of unimaginable proportions. Everyone sensed that the world had just become a more dangerous place. In many cities the Muslim community became a target for the mindless anger of a minority. In Birmingham, the Central Mosque was daubed and Muslims going to prayer were spat at. The sense of this city as a model of good community relationships was damaged by the impact of events thousands of miles away.Rabbi Leonard Tann, leader of Birmingham's Orthodox Jewish community, phoned Dr Mohammed Naseem, Chairman of Birmingham Central Mosque, to offer his support and ask if he could visit the Mosque. They were joined by Bishop Mark Santer and together they gathered on the steps of the Mosque, before the press, to proclaim the bonds of mutual trust and respect between the faith communities of the city.Out of this act of humanity the Birmingham Faith Leaders' Group was born. Six years on and there are now 15 leaders from all the major faith communities of the city - Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Jews, Muslims and Sikhs. This book explores a year of their work from July 2006 - 12 months in which acts of terrorism overseas, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and violence on the streets of Birmingham challenged the faith leaders to seek harmony and justice and to explore the impact which faith could bring to bear on the city of Birmingham. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This work by over 25 authors, gives an insight into the successes and failures of town and country planning over the last 50 years. Written largely by professional planners, this illustrated book should be of interest to everyone with an interest in planning and development. The book tackles the subject decade by decade. For each decade there is an introductory overview of prevailing conditions at the time, followed by a number of the most important examples to indicate the development of planning expertise in each period. The examples are drawn from experience in the West Midlands, a varied region with the metropolitan area of Birmingham and "The Black Country" at its heart surrounded by countryside stretching from the Cotswolds to the Peak District and the Welsh Borders. The concluding section of the book takes a glimpse beyond the year 2000 and gives an indication of the directions for planning in the early years of the next century. The publication celebrates the Golden Jubilee of the West Midlands Branch of the Royal Town Planning Institute. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. "Fiddlers Three & Other Stories" is an anthology of the best fiction by Arthur Rice comprising almost two decades of short stories, plays and the compelling, novella-length, "Fiddlers Three". Some stories are historical thrillers, others are gripping yarns based on the milieu he knew well: fine art investment, horse racing, tax avoidance and the golf club. Dipping into times past, his intriguing 'who really done it' stories, bring to life infamous real-life characters like Lord Lucan, Jack the Ripper and the highwayman, Jonathan Wild as he gives well-known events a twist in a provocative, yet plausible, way that challenges received wisdom. Very sadly, Arthur Rice died in January 2011 but not before seeing the final proof of this book. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This is the story of a 19 year-old who joined the FANY then trained as a radar mechanic during the 1939-45 war. From 1943 she was a radar maintenance officer on London gun-sites, including Hampstead, Primrose Hill and Mill Hill. The work entailed taking responsibility for a group of REME craftsmen and NCOs and gives a detailed account of life in the Little Blitz of Autumn 1943 to May 1944. There is a lively description of the gun sites, the people working on them and in the Officers' Mess, of daily work practices, air-raids and history of the fast development of army radar. There are insights into difficulties of planning and execution. Also there is praise for the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in workshops, without whom no guns could have fired in our defence. In histories of AA Command, their work goes for the most part unmentioned. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Beautifully Illustrated by former Warwickshire cricket captain Jim Troughton, this book tells two stories. The first is the warming tale of a young boy about to play in his first cricket match, and how he finds the strength to conquer his nerves. Interwoven into this first story is the one that inspires young Alex on the eve of his first match. It is the legend of Morvidus, the ancient Lord of Warwickshirc and King of the Britons. The legend of Morvidus gives us the enduring symbol of the ragged staff, still memorably placed on the Warwickshire cricket shirt and worn with pride by Warwickshire cricket players of all ages. All royalties from this book will be given directly to the Warwickshire Cricket Board to support youth cricket projects at all age groups and levels. It was responsible for both passenger and freight services, the pick of which were main line trains from Birmingham to London, Liverpool and Manchester. Local services operated across the West Midlands as far as Staffordshire and Northamptonshire, whilst the depot was also responsible for a number of freight services around the Birmingham area, including the well known Harborne branch. The shed was the first in Birmingham to operate diesel services, running them along steam from 1956. The text is supported by many rare photographs of locomotives and buildings, which trace the history of Monument Lane from Victorian times to the 1960s. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Many books have been written about Leamington's history, but this one is unique - it is the first to document the history of its pubs. The authors have painstakingly researched more than 200 years of history tracking back to a time in the late 1700s when the small village of Leamington Priors had around 300 residents and just 2 inns. With more than 220 entries and 250 illustrations, this comprehensive work traces the number of co-existing pubs from just 2 to a peak of over 100 before the progressive decline to less than 60 at the end of 2013; opening/closing dates, licence listings and snippets of social history are also included. Whether you are a serious historian, a nostalgic Leamingtonian with a hankering for the local pubs of bygone days or someone who will just enjoy checking out the photos over a quiet pint, this is the book for you. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The Girl from Guildford Street describes a working class childhood, growing up in Lozells, Birmingham, 1957-1968. The author and her sister and cousins were the last generation to grow up in the back to backs: Birmingham council houses, two up, one down; no bathroom, inside toilet, central heating or hot running water; centred around a back yard with outside toilets, sheds and a brew'us or wash house. The author looks at family life in the back to backs, and how whole families lived on one street. The author's parents both worked in local factories at a time when manufacturing was booming in Birmingham. This is not a misery memoir - it is the story of a happy childhood in one of Birmingham's poorest areas. It also looks at the Sixties - the fashions, the politics, the music, the hairstyles, the World Cup - as a golden age. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
