The book is the story of the more than eight thousand immigrants in Canada from the former Austro-Hungarian Empire who were interned during the years of the First World War. These camps were spread throughout Canada. This book contains the tales of the approximately six hundred who were in the camp in the Banff - Castle Mountain area. It relates the daily routine, the work projects, the diets, weather, and other minutiae. There are vintage photographs throughout; some of the workers and some of the soldiers who ran the operation. The appendices include a prisoners' Roll. This is a near fine copy in a dust jacket with one short, closed tear. This is a complimentary copy given to members of parliament. This copy has a letter laid in to an unnamed member, signed by the Director of the Ukrainian Information Bureau. The paper clip that held the letter and business card has left an impression partly on the front paste down and partly on the free endpaper.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Clean, tight, unmarked; absolute minimal wear; appears unread; The Literary Discussion of the 1920s was a pivotal event in Ukrainian intellectual history, one whose significance reaches far beyond issues of literary form and style. An expression of cultural self-assertion, it produced a vigorous debate of the issues fundamental to Ukraine's future as a modern nation: its right to exist, its relationship to Russia and Europe, and its sense of identity. The present book is the first comprehensive monograph on the subject. It explores the historical and political context underlying the explosion of polemical writing; analyses the train of events; and discusses the main theoretical issues.

Dust jacket in Mylar jacket protector. ; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 508 pages; "The book Politics of Multiculturalism is the memoir of an academic whose expertise in the education of Canadian minorities led him to take on a major political role in the Canadian multicultural movement. Born in the Ukrainian bloc settlement of east-central Alberta and educated at the universities of Alberta, Minnesota, and Harvard, Manoly R. Lupul combined the outlook of a liberal secular humanist with a conviction that modern society could be enriched by the cultural potential of ethnicity. His concern for the expansion of minority linguistic and cultural rights in Canada was sharpened by a direct encounter with the policy of Russification in Ukraine during a sabbatical leave in the late 1960s. Dr. Lupul's involvement in Canadian multiculturalism began with the drafting and passage of Alberta's first school legislation for bilingual programs (1971); similar laws were subsequently enacted in Saskatchewan and Manitoba.".
