Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Dust jacket designed by James Gillison. Green cloth with bright gilt titling on spine. Previous owner's inscription on ffep. 322 pages clean and tight. New British Drama in Performance on the London Stage: 1970 to 1985 is primarily a study of the eight dramatists who hae either sustained or achieved major status in the British theatre over the last decade and a half: Beckett, Pinter, Stoppard, Storey, Ayckbourn, Hare, Griffiths, Bond. Beckett and Pinter already by 1970 had established reputations but their respective styles were to undergo remarkable transformations that in 1969 could not have been readily anticipated. Storey and Griffiths proved to be conspicuously dramatists of the Seven- ties, discovering a personal style with rapidity and as rapidly pursuing it to the limits of its capacity for expression. The remaining four have over the last fifteen years come fully into their powers and have begun to undergo that process of change and renewal that has made Beckett and Pinter continuing luminaries in our theatre. Eight dramatists do-not constitute the full spectrum of newo playwriting, however. 1)r Cave's exploration of their works broadens out in each chapter either into comparisons with recent plays on similar themes that are handled in more conventional formats or which attempt a different kind of innovation, or into a debate about current developments in the handling of a particular genre or style, such as , the nature of the history play or form in contemporary comedy. A significant feature of new plays in production in this period has been the close relation between the dramatist and the actor (several of the playwrights under discussion have become directors of' their own work); plays are in consequence examined here from the standpoint of their initial London productions, especially in cases where an actor's particular technique has contributed immeasurably to the communication of the play's meaning in performance. This volume is as much a celebration of the art of' the actor as of' the dramatist. Over one hundred and sixty new plays by some forty dramatists are discussed or commented on and the work of' seventy actors and actresses. Size: 8vo.
