Paperback. Condition: Good. A GOOD, clean, tight copy. PROLIFICALLY ILLUSTRATED in black-and-white and full-color photography with accompanying descriptive captions. From the Foreword: "Travel is one of the inevitabilities of modern life. Whether we travel from home to work, on seasonal vacations, or even between earth and outer space, we all share the traveler's imperative: to move ourselves and whatever we carry efficiently, perhaps even comfortably, from one place to another. In the larger scheme of history, pilgrims, nomads, and emigrants share aspects of their experiences of travel with explorers, wanderers, and holiday-makers. From the insightful journals of classical authors to the weekly articles in the travel section of the Sunday newspaper, the literature of travel reflects the rich diversity of man's oddyseys, as well as the fantasies and fears, the joys and travails that all travelers face in common. One chapter in the history of travel has been strangely neglected, however-the ways in which objects have been designed to carry other objects while we travel. 'Bon Voyage: Designs for Travel' leads us on a guided tour of the necessities and the luxuries that have accompanied man on his journeys around the world. We are deeply grateful to Louis Vuitton for their sponsorship of this publication and its accompanying exhibition, 'Bon Voyage:Designs for Travel,' as well as for making available to us a number of distinguished pieces of luggage from their historical collection." 128 pages. Paper Back. Condition: Good. The Courts and the Colonies offers a detailed account of a protracted dispute arising within a Hutterite colony in Manitoba, when the Schmiedeleut leaders attempted to force the departure of a group that had been excommunicated but would not leave. This resulted in about a dozen lawsuits in both Canada and the United States between various Hutterite factions and colonies, and placed the issues of shunning, excommunication, legitimacy of leadership, and communal property rights before the secular courts. What is the story behind this extraordinary development in Hutterite history? How did the courts respond, and how did that outside (state) law relate to the traditional inside law of the Hutterites?Utilizing voluminous court records, Esau provides a detailed and fascinating narrative of the prolonged disputes and litigation history of Hutterite colonies at Lakeside, Oak Bluff, Rock Lake, and Huron. He considers whether the legal action was consistent with the historic non-resistance of Hutterites or whether it signaled a fundamental change in norms of Anabaptist perspectives on litigation. He examines the past history of Hutterite litigation, and how the roots of the schism related to controversy over the Schmiedeleut leadership and its alliance with the Bruderhof, a group of Christian communalists, living mainly in the Eastern United States. At stake is the nature of freedom of religion in Canada and the extent to which our pluralistic society is prepared to accommodate the existence of groups that have an illiberal legal system that may not cohere with the outside legal system of the host society. While this book will be of particular interest to scholars of law and religion, it will also appeal to anyone in Anabaptist studies, sociology, anthropology, political theory, and conflict resolution. Quarto. Very spine cocked. Some soiling to cover and bend in textblock from improper storage. [248 pages].

"America's most famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright revolutionized American homes with his Prairie Style houses and organic sense of interior design. Between 1890 and 1930, Wright achieved international prominence and designed many of his most influential houses. It was also during these years that Wright worked with and employed a number of other highly talented architects and designers. In Frank Lloyd Wright and the Prairie School, Brooks examines the work of George Neidecken, Marion Mahony Griffin, Francis Barry Byrne, Herrman Von Holst, John Lloyd Wright, and others, relating their production and artistic philosophies to those of each other and Frank Lloyd Wright." - Publisher. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Del Valle, Joseph B. (art direction, design) (illustrator). Fine condition half olive boards with a half navy blue cloth spin, gold front cover and spine lettering contained in a very good condition color illustrated dust jacket. Includes Glossary; Reading and Reference; Some Public Collections of Prints; Index; and Acknowledgments/Credits. Profusely illustrated with color photographs, black-and-white photographs, color plate frontispiece, and illustrated front and rear endpapers. "Over a four-century span the art of printmaking in the West evolved from the naive woodcut of the Middle Ages to the dramatic metal engraving of the Renaissance and the sophisticated lithograph of the nineteenth century. Like painting and sculpture, printmaking is a major form of artistic expressin, and the staggering number of works accumulated from these centuries represent an important part of the West's cultural heritage. But prints of this period not only serve to enrich Western culture, they also reflect the course of Western history during their time. The author explains: "From the demise of the illuminated manuscript in the late Middle Ages until the arrival of photography in the nineteenth century, books, if illustrated at all, were illustrated with prints, and prints were the principal means of disseminating pictures of any kind, sacred or profane, to the general public." The fascinating and rich variety of subject matter thus depicted has inspired the novel approach of this book: a survey of the subjects chosen by printmakers rather than the usual history of printmaking as an art form. With subjects ranging from "Visions of Christianity" to "Images Without Objects," and chosen by printmakers as widely diverse as Albrecht Durer and Wassily Kandinsky, this refreshing concept offers new insights into the viewing and collecting of prints and encourages readers to strike out on their own amidst the endless variety of subjects available. A guide to the important techniques used by printmakers through the first third of the twentieth century is provided at the beginning of the book. Included are descriptions of the techniques and of the tools used for each as well as enlarged details from works exemplifying the individual processes. Armed with this information, readers will be able to recognize the various techniques of the prints that appear in later sections. Here it should be emphasized that every print that is multicolored is reproduced in color. Included among the works in this handsomely illustrated volume are several prints from the Cooper-Hewitt Museum's own remarkable collection. A chapter on collecting, a glossary of special terms, a list of further reading and a guide to public collections of prints extend the usefulness of this concise volume." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.
