Soft cover. Condition: VG. Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacker. Photos, Art, Document Reproductions, drawings, Maps (illustrator). 1st. William McPhee was a prominant shipbuilder on the south east rump of the South Island, setting afloat 11 sailing ships during the 1860's and 1870s. Many generations later his great grandson, Mike McPhee set out to tell the story of his adventurous ancestor and the ships he built --- after several years of research this fine book resulted. William came to NZ from Nova Scotia in the late 1850s. He soon settled at Waikawa, Southland, and there built his first NZ ship, the schooner Oamaru Lass about 1860, (he had completed a five year apprenticeship in this trade before coming to NZ). It was to be two and half years before another McPhee ship was launched and these ranged from a 25ton cutter to a three masted topsail schooner of 149 tons. His resumption in shipbuilding co-incided with a surge in demand for coastal shipping resulting from the Otago gold rush of the 1860s, which made nearby Dunedin the largest and wealthiest city in NZ. Initially most of his vessels were used for timber transports but also served in the general coastal trade of the South Island and further afield. The final ship William was involved in building was the Tautuku, built around 1901 and based on the then popular scow design common-place in nortrhern NZ waters. William helped a compatriot with the "finishing work" on this vessel, schooner rigged and just over 51 feet long. But William was more than a ship builder, he also held a master's certificate and was captain of the Tautuku for its first voyage to Dunecin for measuring and registration. In also covering the careers, cargoes, voyages and fates of the ships built by his great grandfather Mike McPhee has provided a sharp picture of those days when small coastal sailing craft were vital to the development of pioneering NZ, when the main method of trade and communication was by sea and river. He also shows how the anciant skills of shipbuilding were transferable from the old world to the new, with construction usually taking place adjacent to the supply of timber. for the work. "Catlins Bound" is a fine addition to the history of ship-building and coastal shipping in NZ's formative years and also a creditable research project by Mike McPhee, a builder in Catlins, where his ancestor built ships. Ian Church, author of a number of NZ maritime histories, edited Mike McPhee;s manuscript. The book is also notable for the excellence of its illustrations, which, include b/w historic photos, some colour shots, colour art --- some specially prepared for the book by Fergus Sutherland, others contemporary works from various collections --- maps, documents shipping schedule adverts etc The book also has a musical connection, with CD "Catlins Bound", a collection of 15 songs composed by the Maritime Crew of Auckland, about the boats built by William McPhee included in a pocket at the back of the book. The CD was produced to complement the book. This an ex-library copy of the first edition of 2009 pubished by the author and printed by Craig Printing, Invercargill, 262 pages including 12 appendices, glossary, bibliography and index. Illustrated throughout. This little used ex-public library copy has crossed bar code lower front cover and small label for CD, library codes spine base. The covers, with flap folds fore and aft, have been covered and strengthened with clear sheet plastic, gutters reinforced with clear tape, small library codes label lower corner half-title, "withdrawn" stamp lower corner title page, no other library markings through text block, which is in excellent condition. CD pocket secured inside rear cover.

Soft Covers. Condition: VG+. No Jacket. Photos, Maps, Documents, Cartoons (illustrator). 1st. Sub-titled "South Pacific Airlines of New Zealand and Their DC-3 Viewmasters", this valuable addition to NZ's aviation literature tells of the couragous attempt by SPANZ to break rhe shackles of the Government-owned monopoly on air travel in the country. Innovative as well as adventurous SPANZ provided links to provincial centres formerly either largely ignored or poorly served. The new venture proved popular with small investors and was also supported by the Australian airline Ansett. Although the airline grew to fly to 21 cities and towns and was popular with patrons the end came in 1966 when the company went into receivership, after five years of operations. Richard Waugh has recorded much of NZ's aviation history in the books he has compiled and edited, of which SPANZ was the sixth and one of the most important. First edition of 2000, 148 pages, illustrated with 12 colour photographs, with b/w photographs, maps, documents and cartoons throughout. Colour pictorial card covers VG+ with hint of wear to corners, internally excellent. Signed on title page by both authors and also SPANZ founding directors Bob Anderson and Rex Daniell. Hard Covers. Condition: NF. No Jacket. Photos, Maps, Document Reproductions, Drawings (illustrator). 1st. Richard Waugh has made an important contribution to NZ aviation literature with a number of titles to his credit. For "Taking Off" he led a foursome of aviation ethusiasts and writers to produce this volume which has as its sub-titled "Pioneeering Small Airlines of New Zealand 1945-1970." The book was published to mark the 100th anniversary of powered flight and dedicated to those who worked for the New Zealand pioneering postwar small airlines and "especially in memory of those pilots who lost their lives.". (The dedication names seven pilots.). In an introductory note to an acknowledgements list Richard Waugh says that "The stories of these small postwar airlines have been neglected in the written history of NZ aviation and mostly overlooked by social historians." There is no doubt that "Taking Off" has done much to correct this literary imbalance by recalling some familiear names, but more importantly by recording those of less well-known commercial aviation pioneers. The main text is presented in 11 chapters, each dealing with the larger and longer-lived postwar airline operators while a 12th chapter covers numerous "Other small airlines which flew (or almost) 1959-1970." Undoubtedly "Taking Off" filled a space in NZ aviation literature which was emptly for too long and it can be unreservedly recommended to any Kiwi aviation enthusiast. It will form a lasting tribute to the men of the small airlines and the aircraft they flew. This copy signed on the title page by Richard Waugh and his three co-authors. First edition of 2003, 228 pages including appendices of surviving aircraft from small airlines of 1945-1970, a history of DH Dominie ZK-BCP/VH BGP and "Air Crash Injustice" a review of controversial investigations of the crash of Bay of Plenty Airways Aero Commander in November 1961, followed by references and index, illustrated throughout with b/w photos plus a 25 image, centrally located, collection of colour photos, few maps and drawings, numerous document reproductions. Laminated hard covers are NF with colour photos to both boards, internally also NF. Signed by author and co-authors on title page. An immaculate copy of an excellent publication. By the Authors.
