"On 16th October 1939, the first enemy aircraft to be shot down over Britain in World War II fell to the Spitfires of 602 (City of Glasgow) and 603 (City of Edin-burgh) Auxiliary Squadrons. (This) is the first history of the pre-war Auxiliary Air Force and Special Reserve and the post-war Royal Auxiliary Air Force Squadrons, and it sets out the full story of the magnificent contributions by the 'weekend' squadrons in all operational commands of the RAF and in most theatres of war, from Europe to Burma. The off-duty histories of these unique squadrons are not forgotten either - for they have a special place also in the memories of these volunteer flyers." Tiny light soiling mark on top of text block. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

"The author was a squadron and wing intelligence officer and kept long and detailed diaries of the day to day life in the Desert Group, and on these the book is largely based. The result is a vivid and realistic picture of the Desert atmosphere; he communicates the tenseness during the nights when the Wellingtons were away on missions, the crashes, the accidents, the debriefings, and the dreaded sandstorms. He recaptures the excitement of the perilous operations, some of which he flew on himself, as well as the lighter moments during stand downs and leave periods. This is an outstanding contribution to aviation history, conveying as it does not only individual heroisms but the corporateness of a squadron in wartime." Book is Fine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing, one or two minor shallow dents on rear panel.

"With the British air defence system supreme by day, the Luftwaffe turned to concentrate their attention towards nocturnal bombing missions on major cities and ports. For this purpose they perfected the technique to become known as 'pathfinding' - the illumination of the target area by a special force as a forerunner to an intense bombing raid. This vital role was to be played by Germany's best known bomber unit, Kampfgruppe 100. Within a detailed and full history of this unit from 1939 until 1941, comes a fascinating account of its operations over Britain, as night after night German bombers went about the systematic destruction of Britain's major cities." Dust jacket has light rubbing.

Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good+. 532 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2' H). B&w photographs, maps. "No. 2 Group was formed in Bomber Command to support the Army. After equipping with Blenheims it specialized in daylight operations. It engaged in the first raid of the war. After taking part in the Norweigan campaign, it was thrown into the struggle to save France. Heavy losses ensued during operations demanding great courage. A hazardous anti-shipping campaign took the Group to Malta. Night intruder operations were made against airfields, and fighter-escorted attacks on Occupied Territory continued until the 1944 Allied landings in France, where support to the invasion was subsequently given and an effective night interdictor campaign carried out. The Group mounted many spectacular operations, particularly when using Mosquitoes. This is indeed a story of immense courage. Based upon records maintained by Royal Air Force Commands, Groups and Squadrons together with personal accounts by those who flew with the Group, the book gives a detailed day-by-day picture of operations, their planning and execution, illustrated with detailed maps. Appendices give plentiful details of the aircraft, the squadrons and the Group's wartime effort." Three small dints on rear board, light rubbing. Dust jacket has three small dints on rear panel, large crease at top corner of rear flap/panel, light edge wrinkling, one tiny closed tear, light rubbing.

"Joining the RAF in 1938, Finucane made a poor start to his flying career, and was not flying operationally till the Battle of Britain when every pilot was needed. Posted to 65 Squadron for the Battle of Britain, he went on to become a flight commander with the first Australian squadron in Britain, 452, where his qualities of leadership quickly became apparent. It was with them that he scored his most spectacular successes in the circus sweeps on the French coast. In January 1942 he became squadron commander of 602 Squadron, and at the time of his death was Wing Commander Flying, Hornchurch. When he disappeared after ditching in the Channel in July 1942 he had destroyed 32 enemy aircraft, and had established an outstanding reputation for tactics and flying skill."
