Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO CHANGE SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF? Have you thought that you might be happier if you had different colored eyes, or if you were a different height or weight? Perhaps you've wished that you had perfect eyesight, that you did not have diabetes, or that you could walk without the aid of crutches or a wheelchair. But did you know that you were created, just the way you are, by God? The Bible says that every person--including you--is "wonderfully made." God "formed" you and "intricately" created you (Psalm 139:13-15). It also says that each of us is like clay, and God is the potter (Isaiah 64:8). Have you ever seen a potter work with clay? It can sometimes take hours of work, with the potter paying very close attention to each detail. Every inch of the clay is carefully formed, not a single part is missed, until the potter creates a masterpiece. Even though potters take great care in their clay creations, God took even more care when he created you! Did you also know that the Bible tells us that God is perfect (Matthew 5:48)? That means that he does not make mistakes! You were created by a loving and perfect God, and he made you to be completely unique--you are not like anyone else in the world! God created you, he loves you, and you are special to him. make no mistake! Even though God is perfect, we are not. God knows everything about us. He knows the good things that we do and the bad things that we don't want anyone to know about. The Bible says that we all have done bad things (sins) and that we all deserve to be punished for doing them (Romans 3:23, 6:23). But you and I are so special to God that he sent his very own Son, Jesus, to die on the cross and take the punishment we deserve. "God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son [to die for our sins], that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life" (John 3:16). Isn't that great news?! Jesus opened up the way for you to have a home in heaven (where one day, everything will be perfect)! But first, you must agree with God that you've sinned, and trust that Jesus forgave you when he was on the cross. Those who believe in Jesus like this become God's very own children (John 1:12). He wants you to experience his love, be part of his family and to help you every day -- it's why he created you! This tract affirms that each person is created in the image of God, and God created you just the way you are! Written in partnership with Joni and Friends International. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. GOD REALLY DOES CARE FOR YOU! Some time ago someone placed this ad in a Kansas newspaper: I will listen to you talk for 30 minutes without comment for $5.00. Sounds like a joke, doesn't it? But the person was serious. Did anybody call? You bet. It wasn't long before this individual was receiving ten to twenty calls a day. The piercing pain of loneliness was so sharp that some were willing to try anything for a half hour of companionship. God knows your feelings of loneliness, my friend, and he does care. Please believe that! He not only knows and cares, he understands, he is touched, he is moved. And he longs to sustain and deliver us. Jesus Christ himself experienced the maximum impact of loneliness, as he hung on the cross. His friends had already fled. One had betrayed him. In the bottomless agony of that moment, the Lord cried out--he literally screamed aloud (Matthew 27:45-46). The loneliness of those dark moments, as the Savior carried our sin, cannot be adequately pictured on paper. Cold print cannot convey it. But is it any wonder that he is now able to sympathize and enter in as we battle feelings of loneliness? Those who bear the scars of that silent warfare need no explanation of the pain--only an invitation to share in the wound and, if possible, help in the healing. When we are lonely, we need an understanding friend. Jesus is the One who sticks "closer than a brother" (Proverbs 18:24). When we are lonely, we need strength to keep putting one foot in front of the other--Jesus is the One who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13). When we are lonely, we need to lift our eyes off ourselves. Jesus, the "author and finisher" of the life of faith, invites us to fix our eyes on him and refuse to give up (Hebrews 12:1-3). God is a specialist when the anguish is deep. His ability to heal the soul is profound, but only those who fully rely on his Son experience relief. By turning from the loneliness of sin and unbelief to faith in Jesus Christ, you can have confidence that God cares for you: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). Won't you put your trust in him today? Jesus identifies with and cares for the lonely, reconciling sinners to himself through his death and resurrection. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Perhaps one of the most commonly referenced verses in the Bible is John 3:16, in which Jesus says, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." Even though you may recognize John 3:16 when it shows up on posters at sporting events, do you really know what it means? And who is this John person anyway? By way of introduction, John was one of the twelve disciples that followed Jesus during his ministry, and he is also the author of the books of the Bible called First, Second, and Third John, as well as Revelation. He wrote the Gospel of John, including the verses that are referenced in this pamphlet, sometime between A.D. 70 and A.D. 100 from a city in Asia Minor (modern- day Turkey). John's Gospel is crucial to learning more about Jesus and discovering what it means to become a Christian. His purpose in writing this book of the Bible is to evidence that Jesus is the Son of God and our Savior. By believing in Jesus and trusting in the salvation from our sin that he offers, people can gain eternal life. WHY DO WE NEED TO BE SAVED? Jesus said, "Everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin" (John 8:34). If we are honest with ourselves, we cannot deny that from the moment of our birth we have done wrong things--things that make us guilty before God and deserving of his judgment. The Bible calls these wrong things sin, and sin separates us from God. And because we are separated from God, we face the awful prospect of his eternal wrath (John 3:36). JESUS IS THE ONLY WAY Can anyone save us from God's wrath and assure us of heaven? Some people believe that they can get into heaven by doing good works, or by following the teachings of a religion, or even by giving money to churches or charities. But Jesus clearly said that none of these things would save us: "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). No human effort can give us eternal life. In fact, the only "work" that can save us is the "work" of believing in what Jesus has done to accomplish our salvation: "This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent" (John 6:29). And to those who so believe, the promise of God stands firm: "To all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God" (John 1:12). HOW DOES JESUS SAVE US? John the Baptist, a biblical prophet, calls Jesus the "Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). Jesus explains that our salvation comes through his death on the cross as the perfect and sufficient sacrifice for our sin (John 3:14-15). When reading the Gospel of John, for example, you'll notice that chapters 18-19 describe Jesus' death and then chapter 20 tells of his glorious triumph over death as he rose from the dead. Jesus' resurrection means that he can give eternal life to all who believe in him: "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die . . ." (John 11:25-26). DO YOU BELIEVE? John 11:26 ends with Jesus asking, "Do you believe this?" It is a question that every person must answer: Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God? Do you believe that he died on the cross to free you from guilt and judgment of sin? Do you believe that he rose from the grave, breaking the power of death and making a way for you to have eternal life in heaven? If you believe that these things are true, then you may want to express your faith in him by praying this prayer: Heavenly Father, I believe that Jesus Christ is your Son, and that he died on the cross to save me from my sin. I believe that he rose again to life, and that h Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The "Lord's Prayer" is how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. And by his example, he showed them the need for time alone with the Father in prayer. We too must set aside time to talk with God and read his Word. The following are suggestions for your time with God: 1. NECESSITY OF PRAYER. Jesus taught that prayer is not an option--something to do when we "feel like it"--it is a God-given responsibility. Few of us "find time" to pray, but we must make the time (Ephesians 5:16). 2. THE BIBLE. The Bible and prayer go hand in hand. Pray as you read, and meditate on God's Word as you pray. As you read the Bible, praise God for what he reveals of himself and pray for strength and wisdom to obey his commands. Try using the prayers of the Bible as patterns: Matthew 6:9-13; Ephesians 1:15-23; Ephesians 3:14-21; and the Psalms are excellent inspirations. 3. PRAYER LIST. A list of prayer requests reminds you of specific needs and will keep your mind from wandering. By recording how God has answered a request, you will be encouraged to keep praying. But don't let this steal your spontaneity. You are praying to a Person, not compiling a list! 4. PRAYER PARTNER. To help you pray consistently, ask God for a friend with whom you can share and pray. Meeting regularly provides mutual encouragement. 5. DISTRACTIONS. Because prayer is spiritual warfare, Satan will try to distract you. Ask God to help you pray regularly and he will direct you. If you have trouble with wandering thoughts, try changing positions, praying aloud, consulting a prayer list and your Bible, singing a hymn, or whatever you find most effective. But whatever you do, pray! Lord, teach us to pray, Jesus's disciples asked. This simple prayer, which Jesus taught his disciples, can also show us how to talk with God in prayer. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. MATTHEW 6:9-13 "OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN" Jesus taught his disciples to call God "our Father." It is this intimate father/child RELATIONSHIP that makes prayer possible. As children of God, we come to his throne expectant and unafraid because we are accepted in his beloved Son (Hebrews 4:15-16). Because we are his children, we can speak with our heavenly Father often--he loves to hear our prayers! "HALLOWED BE YOUR NAME" Worship--to honor and adore God--is the highest privilege of the Christian. We who have experienced the miracle of his saving grace can PRAISE HIM for his greatness and love. Throughout the day, we can offer praise and thanksgiving as he showers us with his blessings. "Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him! Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness" (1 Chronicles 16:29). "YOUR KINGDOM COME, YOUR WILL BE DONE, ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN" As God's children, we long for his righteous reign throughout the earth. But HIS REIGN must first begin in our own lives. We are made sensitive to his will for us as we prayerfully read and meditate on the Word of God. Even as we pray, God exposes our spiritual condition and brings our desires into conformity with his will (Romans 12:2). "GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD" We are DEPENDENT upon God for all of our needs-- spiritual and material. And, like any loving Father, he desires to richly bless us. Nothing is too great for his power; nothing is too small for his love. He invites us to share the most intimate details of our life with him. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requ Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Discipline seems like a hard word, but discipline is your lifeline, something that you learn to embrace and thank God for as you grow in him.The apostle Paul links the idea of discipline with spiritual life: "Train yourself for godliness"--referring to a spiritual workout--for "godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come" (1 Timothy 4:7-8). A Christian woman's life is about bringing her will and every area of her life under submission to God's will.1. Discipline of the Gospel: The Source of Godliness"Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures" (1 Corinthians 15:3). To be a godly woman you must know what this gospel is, believe it, and make it the center of your life. Never lose the wonder of the gospel. John 3:16 is not only a beautiful summary of what God has done, it ought to be the true center of our living--defining, motivating, and satisfying us. The gospel is a woman's first and most important discipline, for it is the source of godliness.2. Discipline of Submission: The Posture of GodlinessIt saddens me that submission has been eliminated from our cultural vocabulary. Bringing our lives into submission to God's will in everything is the key to being a godly woman (Philippians 2:8-11). It is also the path to joy.Submission applies to every area of our lives, and we begin by restoring the gospel to its rightful place at the center of our thoughts and deeds everyday. It's an ongoing, daily choosing of God's ways over our own ways (James 4:7-10; Hebrews 12:9). Is the will of God more important than our lives (Luke 9:24)?3. Discipline of Prayer: Submission's LifelinePray "at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication" (Ephesians 6:18). Prayer is the source of power for growth and perseverance in our spiritual lives. It bends our wills to God's, which is what submitting our lives is all about.Prayer cannot be reduced to a few simple rules, and though we sometimes talk about meditation, confession, adoration, submission, and petition, there is no prescribed order. But continual prayer is God's will for us. we must always be "looking up," even when driving to work or cleaning the house.4. Discipline of Worship: Submission's CelebrationWorship encompasses all of life: "Present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship" (Romans 12:1). Because Christ is the ultimate revelation of God (Colossians 1:15-20), he must be the central focus of our worship as understood through Scripture (1 Timothy 4:13). Worship --whether by oneself at home, in the workplace, classroom, or with the church gathered--is consecration. Every woman who calls herself a Christian must understand that worship is the ultimate priority of her life. every day.5. Discipline of Mind: Submission's EducationNo computer will ever be able to think God's thoughts or know the heart of God or do his works. But it's what the brain was created for--to have the mind of Christ. What a scandal that so many Christians don't think Christianly! In one comprehensive sentence, Paul prescribes his personal mental program: "Whatever is true. honorable. just. pure. lovely. commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things" (Philippians 4:8). If you are filled with God's Word, your life can then be informed and directed by God--your relationships at home, parenting, career, ethical decisions, and internal moral life.6. Discipline of Contentment: Submission's RestPaul wrote from prison that he had "learned in whatever situation I am to be content" (Philippians 4:11). Fortunately for us, he said that he had "learned". there is hope for all of us who face the monster of discontent!A Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. PERHAPS CHRISTMAS IS DIFFICULT FOR YOU-- God understands. He's been here. If he was willing to be born in a barnyard, then expect him to be at work anywhere. No place is too common. No person is too hardened. No distance is too far. There is no limit to his love. THE MIRACLE OF BETHLEHEM Out of chaos, Christ came. In spite of, and out of, the pandemonium, Christ came.On a cold night in Bethlehem, Joseph built a fire and heated water. Mary cleared a spot on the straw and set about the task of bringing God into the world. With cows as her witnesses and Joseph as her midwife, she did just that. It wasn't long before the hand of the star hanger clutched Mary's finger. The feet of the sky walker lay in Joseph's palm. In that moment Mary knew it was all worth it. The ache in her back, the ache in her heart--they faded away. The questions of how, and the wonderings of when--they didn't linger. The surprise pregnancy, the sudden census, the long road from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Unpleasant and difficult, yet they resulted in the world's greatest miracle. Was the first Christmas different from what Mary had planned? Yes, but it turned out greater than she could have dreamed. God used the struggles to accomplish his will.Don't you need that reminder? Despite the chaos of the first Christmas, everything happened according to God's plan. In your world of short nights, hard work, and high stress, remember that God holds everything together for his glory and for the good of those who love him. LOVE IS BORN, HOPE IS HERE When Christ was born, so was our hope.Because Christ came, God is always near us. He is always for us and always in us. Jesus entered our world not like a human but as a human, and he endured everything that we do and more--God became human down to his very toes. Jesus understands what you feel and has faced what you face. He's been through weakness and testing, experienced it all--all but the sin.Because of Bethlehem's miracle, you can answer these fundamental questions: Does God care if I'm sad? Look at the tear-streaked face of Jesus as he stands near Lazarus's tomb (John 11:28-44). Does God know if I'm ignored or rejected? Find the answer in the compassionate eyes of Christ as he stands to defend the adulterous woman (John 8:1-11). Jesus knows the burden of a broken heart. He could have come to us as a shining light or a voice in the clouds, but he came as a person. If you ever wonder whether God truly understands you, remember that he sent his only Son, Jesus, to bear your burdens and save you from your sins. HOPE IN THE SAVIOR The Christmas promise is this: We have a Savior and his name is Jesus. Each one of us entered the world with a sin nature. Even under the right circumstances you will do the wrong thing. You won't want to, but you will. The Bible says that "sin came into the world through one man (Adam), and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned" (Romans 5:12).But the good news--the reason for hope this Christmas and every day of your life--is that Jesus entered the world to save you from your sins. Those who trust in Jesus have been saved from the guilt of sin, are being saved from the problems of sin, and, upon the return of Christ, will be saved from the punishment for sin."God . . . loved us and sent His unique Son on a special mission to become an atoning sacrifice for our sins" (1 John 4:10). Jesus took on our sin. By his death on the cross, he endured what we should have endured and paid the price to save us. "When we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly." (Romans 5:6)"Christ . . . died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he migh Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Men, we will never get anywhere in life without discipline, and doubly so in spiritual matters. None of us is inherently righteous, so Paul's instructions regarding spiritual discipline in 1 Timothy 4:7-8 take on personal urgency: "Train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come."That word "train" comes from the Greek word from which we derive gymnasium. So, I invite you into God's Gym--to some pain and great gain!Discipline of PuritySensuality is the biggest obstacle to godliness among Christian men. The fall of King David should not only instruct us but scare the sensuality right out of us! Fill yourself with God's Word--memorize passages like 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8, Job 31:1, Proverbs 6:27, Ephesians 5:3-7, and 2 Timothy 2:22. Find someone who will help you keep your soul faithful to God.A pure mind is impossible if you mindlessly watch TV and movies or visit pornographic web sites (1 Thessalonians 4:3-7). Develop the divine awareness that sustained Joseph: "How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?" (Genesis 39:9).Discipline of RelationshipsTo be all God wants you to be, put some holy sweat into your relationships! If you're married, you need to live out Ephesians 5:25-31: "Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her" (v. 25). For those who are fathers, God provides a workout in one pungent sentence: "Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:4).Relationships are not optional (Hebrews 10:25); they enable us to develop into what God wants us to be and most effectively learn and live God's truth.Discipline of MindThe potential of possessing the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16) introduces the scandal of today's church--Christians who do not think Christianly, leaving our minds undisciplined. The Apostle Paul understood this well: ".whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things" (Philippians 4:8). Each ingredient is a matter of personal choice. You can never have a Christian mind without reading the Scriptures regularly because you cannot be influenced by that which you do not know.Discipline of DevotionReading God's Word is essential, but meditation internalizes the Word and responds, "I desire to do your will, O my God" (Psalm 40:8). Beyond instructions like Ephesians 6:18-20, there are two great reasons to pray. The more we expose our lives to the white-hot sun of Christ's righteous life, the more his image will be burned into our character. The second reason is that prayer bends our wills to God's will. Many men never have an effective devotional life because they never plan for it; they never expose their lives to his pure light.Discipline of IntegrityWe can hardly overstate the importance of integrity to a generation of believers so much like the world in ethical conduct. But integrity's benefits--character, a clear conscience, deep intimacy with God--argue its importance. We must let God's Word draw our lines of conduct. Our speech and actions must be intentionally true (Proverbs 12:22; Ephesians 4:15), backed by the courage to keep our word and stand up for our convictions (Psalm 15:4). An old saying sums it up: "Sow an act, reap a habit. Sow a habit, reap a character. Sow a character, reap a destiny."(1)Discipline of Tongue"If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless" (James 1:26). Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. One Easter as I read through the story of the crucifixion, I spent several hours deliberating over the words of Christ when he cried in anguish from the cross, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" The idea that the Father would allow his Son to suffer the torture of crucifixion is beyond me--the humiliation of nakedness, the searing pain, the smell of blood and sweat, the agony of tears, the spit of drunken soldiers, the scorn of a laughing, jeering mob. When the crowd thinned and the cowards took shelter from the lashing storm, Jesus was left alone. As tears mingled with blood on his battered face, he cried out to his Father--the one who had not once turned away from him in all of eternity. The reply was cold, unmoving silence. In those horrible moments God himself poured the judgment for our sins upon Jesus. Every sin imaginable: lusting and lying, cheating and coveting, murder and hypocrisy, cruelty and deceit. Of course, Christ had never been guilty of any of those sins. But we are. And every one of your sins and mine was racked up on his account right there on that cross. As the prophet testified: Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows. . . . But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned--every one--to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. (Isaiah 53:4-6) So where was God's goodness in treating Christ so? Where was the Father's kindness in turning his back on his only Son while Jesus cried out in horror and grief? On that terrible, wonderful day, God's goodness and kindness were directed toward you. God forsook his own Son so that he would never have to forsake you! And because of those dark hours two thousand years ago, God can say to you and me, "I will never leave you. I will never forsake you." As I pondered that amazing thought, I felt ashamed. The goodness of God was indeed leading me to repentance. To think that God's anger for my sins was poured out on Christ--and that he has no anger left for me! You know what that makes me want to do? Praise him. Thank him. Honor him. Obey him with all my heart and soul and mind. Unlike Christ, I will never have to agonize over separation from my Father. And neither will you. God poured the full measure of his wrath--the terrors of eternal hell--on his own Son so that you and I could be adopted into his very family. That's how much he loves you. And me. Joni Eareckson Tada's moving account of Christ's crucifixion brings to mind the realities of our Savior's suffering as he bore the sins of humanity. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. An intimate message from God to you.The words you're about to read are true, and they will change your life if you let them. This letter comes from the heart of God to tell you that he loves you, and that he is the Father you've been looking for all your life. The promises God makes in these words from the Bible are directed to his children--those who have placed their trust in God's Son, Jesus, as their Savior. And the good news is, you too can become a child of God! Be sure to read the last page of this pamphlet to find out more. My Child, You may not know me, but I know everything about you (Ps 139:1). I know when you sit down and when you rise up (Ps 139:2). I am familiar with all your ways (Ps 139:3)--even the very hairs on your head are numbered (Matt 10:29-31). You were made in my image (Gen 1:27). In me you live and move and have your being, for you are my offspring (Acts 17:28). I knew you even before you were conceived (Jer 1:4-5). I chose you when I planned creation (Eph 1:11-12). You were not a mistake, for all your days are written in my book (Ps 139:15-16). I determined the exact time of your birth and where you would live (Acts 17:26). You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Ps 139:14). I knit you together in your mother's womb (Ps 139:13), and brought you forth on the day you were born (Ps 71:6). I have been misrepresented by those who don't know me (John 8:41-44). I am not distant and angry, but am the complete expression of love (1 John 4:16). And it is my desire to lavish my love on you (1 John 3:1), simply because you are my child and I am your Father (1 John 3:1). I offer you more than your earthly father ever could (Matt 7:11), for I am the perfect Father (Matt 5:48). Every good gift that you receive comes from my hand (James 1:17), for I am your provider and I meet all your needs (Matt 6:31-33). My plan for your future has always been filled with hope (Jer 29:11), because I love you with an everlasting love (Jer 31:3). My thoughts toward you are as countless as the sand on the seashore (Ps 139:17-18), and I rejoice over you with singing (Zeph 3:17). I will never stop doing good to you (Jer 32:40), for you are my treasured possession (Ex 19:5). I desire to establish you with all my heart and all my soul (Jer 32:41), and I want to show you great and marvelous things (Jer 33:3). If you seek me with all your heart, you will find me (Deut 4:29); delight in me and I will give you the desires of your heart (Ps 37:4), for it is I who gave you those desires (Phil 2:13). I am able to do more for you than you could possibly imagine (Eph 3:20), for I am your greatest encourager (2 Thess 2:16-17). I am also the Father who comforts you in all your troubles (2 Cor 1:3-4). When you are brokenhearted, I am close to you (Ps 34:18); as a shepherd carries a lamb, I have carried you close to my heart (Isa 40:11). One day I will wipe away every tear from your eyes, and I will take away all the pain you have suffered on this earth (Rev 21:3-4). I am your Father, and I love you even as I love my son, Jesus (John 17:23). In him, my love for you is revealed (John 17:26). He is the exact representation of my being (Heb 1:3). He came to demonstrate that I am for you, not against you (Rom 8:31), and to tell you that I am not counting your sins against you (2 Cor 5:18-19). Jesus died so that you and I could be reconciled (2 Cor 5:18-19). His death was the ultimate expression of my love for you (1 John 4:10): I gave up everything I loved that I might gain your love (Rom 8:31-32). If you receive the gift of my son, Jesus, you receive me (1 John 2:23), and nothing will ever separate you from my love again (Rom 8:38-39). Come home and I'll throw the biggest party heaven has ever seen (Luke 15:7). The Greatest Exchange Adapted from Kiss the Wave by Dave Furman By Dave Furman Kelly Gissendaner was on death row for almost two decades for the murder of her husband. She planned the murder and convinced her lover to kidnap her husband and kill him in the woods. Afterward they set the evidence on fire. Their motive was to collect a life insurance policy and receive sole ownership of the house the Gissendaners had just purchased. A jury convicted Kelly of murder for her role in the crime, and after refusing a plea deal, she was given a death sentence. While she sat on death row, Kelly's entire life changed. She was transformed as she came to understand that Jesus died for her. She encountered the Bible and the truth of the gospel. God worked in her heart to bring her to repentance of her sins and to faith in Christ. The fruit of Kelly's transformation was on display for all to see. Kelly began to minister to the other women in prison and led various Bible studies. She counseled women through an air vent and prevented some women from committing suicide.Perhaps the biggest change was that, in Christ, she found peace in the midst of the storm of death she was facing. She was in awe that Jesus took her place on the ultimate death row. On one occasion she said, "I have learned first-hand that no one, not even me, is beyond redemption through God's grace and mercy. I have learned to place my hope in the God I now know, the God whose plans and promises are made known to me in the whole story of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus." Her hope was not in her continued breaths in this life, but in her union with Christ in this life and in the next. She was a shipwrecked woman who finally found land. Not all of us have been convicted of murder, but all of us have at one time rejected God. The Bible is clear that we are all under an eternal death sentence and apart from God's intervention we would all sit on death row facing a forever death. The truth of God's holiness and our sin means we can never be in his presence unless something changes. We are not simply in need of an inspiring example--we need a saving substitute. We need someone who will take our punishment. When Jesus was being tried for crimes he did not commit, the Roman governor Pilate gave the people a choice: He could release Jesus, an innocent man, or a man called Barabbas, who was a known terrorist. The crowd chose Barabbas and demanded Jesus to be crucified. The crowd chose a murderer over the one who brings the dead back to life. They chose evil over the one who loves perfectly.Put yourself in Barabbas's place for a minute. You are walking to your death in chains and then all of a sudden, when you least expect it, you are free. Then you hear the words begin again: "Crucify him, crucify him." You see another person walking by. Those chants are not for you. The guards are dragging another one to his death-- Jesus of Nazareth. He's beaten and flogged and is forced to carry his cross to his death. It's the very cross you had imagined yourself carrying only moments earlier. You think to yourself, "That's my death he's dying."The Bible says of Jesus that "For our sake [God] made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God" (2 Cor. 5:21). You and I are sinners. We sit in a spiritual prison, bound helpless, awaiting the day when we will receive the just punishment we deserve. We sit on the death row of all death rows waiting to be dragged out to death not knowing when God's righteous judgment will come down. But the good news is that when you repent of your sin and trust in Jesus to save you, Jesus goes off to the cross in your place. He gets what you deserve; you get what he deserves. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Since September 11, 2001, I have seen more clearly than ever how essential it is to exult explicitly in the excellence of Christ crucified for sinners and risen from the dead. Christ must be explicit in all our God-talk. It will not do, in this day of pluralism, to talk about the glory of God in vague ways. God without Christ is no God. And a no-God cannot save or satisfy the soul. Following a no-God--whatever his name or whatever his religion--will be a wasted life. God-in-Christ is the only true God and the only path to joy. To bring us to this highest and most durable of all pleasures, God made his Son, Jesus Christ, a bloody spectacle of blameless suffering and death. This is what it cost to rescue us from a wasted life. The eternal Son of God "did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing." He took "the form of a servant" and was born "in the likeness of men . . . . He humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross" (Philippians 2:6-8). All Things Were Made for Him This Jesus was and is a real historical man in whom "the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily" (Colossians 2:9). Since he is "God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God," as the old Nicene Creed says, and since his death and resurrection are the central act of God in history, it is not surprising to hear the Bible say, "All things were created through him and for him" (Colossians 1:16). For him! That means for his glory. Ever since the incarnate, redeeming work of Jesus, God is gladly glorified by sinners only through the glorification of the risen God-Man, Jesus Christ. His bloody death is the blazing center of the glory of God. There is no way to the glory of the Father but through the Son. All the promises of joy in God's presence, and pleasures at his right hand, come to us only through faith in Jesus Christ. If We Reject Him, We Reject God Jesus is the litmus test of reality for all persons and all religions. He said it clearly: "The one who rejects me rejects him who sent me" (Luke 10:16). People and religions who reject Christ reject God. Do other religions know the true God? Here is the test: Do they reject Jesus as the only Savior for sinners who was crucified and raised by God from the dead? If they do, they do not know God in a saving way. That is what Jesus meant when he said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). Or when he said, "Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him" (John 5:23). Or when he said to the Pharisees, "If God were your Father, you would love me" (John 8:42). If we would see and savor the glory of God, we must see and savor Christ. For Christ is "the image of the invisible God" (Colossians 1:15). To put it another way, if we would embrace the glory of God, we must embrace the Gospel of Christ. The reason for this is not only because we are sinners and need a Savior to die for us, but also because this Savior is himself the fullest and most beautiful manifestation of the glory of God. He purchases our undeserved and everlasting pleasure, and he becomes for us our all-deserving, everlasting Treasure. The Gospel is the Good News of the Glory of Christ This is how the Gospel is defined. When we are converted through faith in Christ, what we see with the eyes of our hearts is "the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God" (2 Corinthians 4:4). The Gospel is the good news of all-conquering beauty. Or to say it the way Paul does, it is the good news of "the glory of Christ." When we embrace Christ, we embrace God. We see and savor God's glory. There is no savoring of God's glory if we do not see it in Christ. Rediscovering the Voice of God Adapted from Discovering the Good Life by Tim Savage By Tim Savage In our world there are thousands of weary souls and troubled hearts, people yearning for satisfaction in life but finding mostly disappointment. But it doesn't have to be that way.Jesus Christ promised life and promised it in abundance. Moreover, he has done everything in his matchless power to fulfill the promise. On the cross, Jesus purged the power of what ruins life--sin. On the cross, he paid the penalty of what ends life--death. In the resurrection, he opened the door to a new way to be human--fullness of life. In the combined work of the cross and the resurrection, he purified hearts and fitted them to be vessels of his life. It is a life overbrimming with love, power, truth, peace, goodness, righteousness, comfort, and joy.Not all Christians know this abundance of life, and perhaps many reading these words feel less than completely full. The problem boils down to this: you are probably unaware of your identity in Christ. You do not understand who you are in Christ.Every day you receive a steady stream of verbal input. Some of it begins in your imagination--as interior dialogues of the mind--and some of it begins in the world--as the external messages of society.Too often it is burdensome input, focusing on life's problems and whispering negative messages such as "You're going to fail," "You'll never be attractive," "You ought to be more successful by now," "You'll never escape the past," "You're destined to be alone," "You'll never amount to anything," "Your goals are beyond reach," "You'll never find happiness." "You lost your job," "You're divorced," "You filed for bankruptcy," "You're hopeless." "Shame on you!" "You're not good enough!"It is vital to discern the voices. Those stoking discouragement, fear, and guilt can be dismissed, because they do not fit the vocabulary of God. They do not originate from him.To whom, then, do we owe dispiriting messages? The apostle Paul tells us. "We do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places" (Eph. 6:12). The voice of discouragement belongs to the voice of "this present darkness," hence to the devil. And the goal of Satan is to derail us, to slay us with negativity. He "prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour" (1 Pet. 5:8).As Christians, we must distinguish the voices. If they condemn us, they are not from God. "There is . . . no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" (Rom. 8:1).For fullness of life, we must attune ourselves to the promises of God.For instance, God promises that "I will never leave you nor forsake you" (Heb. 13:5; see Josh. 1:5). We need not listen to the voice of loneliness, even when we feel desolate and deserted.God promises that he will make us "more than conquerors through him who loved us" (Rom. 8:37). We must not listen to the voice of insecurity, even amidst stinging failure.God promises that "all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose" (Rom. 8:28). We must not listen to the voice of despair, even when facing difficult trials.God promises that we can "rejoice always" (1 Thess. 5:16; see Phil. 4:4). We need not listen to the voice of sorrow.God promises "peace I leave with you" (John 14:27). We must not listen to the voice of doubt, apprehension, and vulnerability.God promises that he has already "seated us with him in the heavenly places" (Eph. 2:6). We need not listen to the voice of anxiety and the possibility of future losses.God promises that he will "g Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
