Nuovo - Rilegato EUR 95,00 Quantità: 1 Doornspijk, Davaco Publishers, 1991. 134 pp. 105 ills (70 in colour). Orig. hardcover (gilt lettered brown cloth over boards), d./j. (The Davaco Collection). - - New copy !!Aart Schouman can be aptly described as one of the most neglected and underestimated painters of the eighteenth century. The explanation for this can undoubtedly be found in the fact that a great part of his oeuvre - painted wall-hangings and chimney- and doorpieces - were nailed firmly in place in the rooms and halls for which they were made, unintentionally relegated to obscurity. In the field of painted wall-hangings Aart Schouman had a predecessor in his fellow townsman Abraham Busschop, who was in his turn, inspired by Melchior d'Hondecoeter. After a short period in which he painted religious and mythological subjects, Schouman proceeded to make his most important contribution in this field: the many colored bird-piece, with indigenous and exotic birds and mammals. Many of these wall-hangings were removed from their original 'homes' and subsequently sold to collectors abroad or lost. Only one set was preserved for the Netherlands, acquiring a place in the Royal Palace 'Huis ten Bosch'.Schouman's two main channels of expression were painting and drawing. Of the large number of oil paintings he made, only a few have been handed down to us. Examples of his draughtmanship however, have been been preserved in superabundance. There are numerous depictions in Indian ink, watercolor, and gouache of animals (especially birds) and plants, as well as topographical views. In this last category Schouman may be called one of the first modern Dutch aquarellists.

Liedtke Gerard Houckgeest - Hendrick van Vliet - Emanuel de Witte 1982. 4to. 154 pp. text and 130 plates (14 in color). Cloth bound ISBN 90-70288-11-7 Architectural Painting in Delft is a thorough study of the pictures of church interiors painted in Delft by Gerard Houckgeest, Hendrick van Vliet and Emanuel de Witte. Their sources in earlier artists like Pieter Saenredam and Bartholomeus van Bassen, their influence on contemporaries like Anthony de Lorme, Daniel de Blieck and the Berckheyde brothers, and the entire Amsterdam career of Emanuel de Witte are also discussed. A very different view of De Witte's work is taken than that found in the standard monograph (Manke, 1963), particularly in respect to the attribution, dating, and relationship to Houckgeest of De Witte's earliest church interiors. Revisions to Manke's catalogue, a catalogue of the pictures of actual churches painted by Houckgeest, and a long oeuvre list of the church interiors painted by Van Vliet are appended to the five chapters of text. Finally, a discussion and list of the church interiors painted by Cornelis de Man take into account pictures that have very recently come to light or are here attributed to him. The book is based on the author's doctoral dissertation completed at the Courtauld Institute in 1974, but it is completely rewritten and revised, and considers literature published and pictures known by January, 1982. language : english text Size: Quarto.

Judith Leyster ( 1609-1660 ) A Woman Painters in Holland's Golden Age,by Frmi Fix Hofrichter.Doornspijk 1989 Davaco Publishers Pages 140 ills.159 in b/n ( 18 colori ) Quarto cloth Euro 195,00./ ( Aetas Aurea Volume IX ) Aetas Aurea, Vol. IX Frima Fox Hofrichter JUDITH LEYSTER (1609-1660). A Woman Painter in Holland's Golden Age. 1989. 4to. 140 pp. text, 159 plates and ills. (18 in color). Cloth bound ISBN 90-70288-62-1 - Judith Leyster's compelling ¿uvre covers a wide range of interests: genre, still-life and portrait paintings; botanical drawings in watercolor and silverpoint; and at least one etching. Her work ranges from modest pieces to the iconographically complex. She painted card sharps and backgammon players; boys playing flutes, lutes or violins; men attempting to seduce women; and mothers sewing and combing their children's hair. She delighted in the play of sunlight on a wall and the mysterious shadows of night animated by the flickering of a candle flame. Although she is perhaps best known as a follower of Frans Hals, her innovative, small nocturnal paintings are perhaps her most significant contribution to Dutch art. Her successful depiction of genre scenes of both the jovial and the subdued is a testament to the breadth of her talent and versatility. This is the first book on Leyster. The main text contains three chapters: her life, her painting and her critical fortune. Then the catalogue raisonné, a list of forty relevant documents, and a household inventory. Finally there is a bibliography and three indexes. Her life, before her marriage in a household where her father was a bankrupt and, in her marriage to the artist Jan Miense Molenaer, who was constantly charged with non-payment of debts, seems always to have been stressed by the possibility of financial ruin; five children (three died young), too must have contributed to her struggle with a professional life. As a result, Leyster is less prolific than her early years suggest. Leyster's work in those early years saw the influence of both Frans Hals and the Utrecht Caravaggisti - a combination which created some emotionally-charged nocturnal, domestic scenes as well as happy-go-lucky violin players. The question of Leyster's own status in the guild, and as an artist with students, is examined from both an art historical and feminist perspective, as is the critical response to her work for the last three hundred years. Leyster, a forgotten painter until the end of the nineteenth century, is perhaps only beginning to be appreciated in our time - to become what she always wished and what her name implies: a "leading star". The catalogue raisonné includes forty-eight authentic known works; seven problem pieces; twelve lost works, known only from 17th and 18th century descriptions; and eighteen misattributed works. Copies, variants and engravings of each are recorded. For the first time, the complete record of the Leyster-Molenaer estate, inventoried in 1668, totalling 340 household items including over hundred paintings, is transcribed and translated.language : english text.

(20 in color). Cloth bound ISBN 90-70288-47-8 Caesar van Everdingen is now justifiably regarded as the most prominent representative of Dutch Classicism. His art is important to the general study of history painting in the Golden Age and particularly to the assessment of the decoration of the Oranjezaal in the Huis ten Bosch at The Hague. New and extensive archival research has made it possible to complete the artist's biography. His oeuvre is presented in the form of a catalogue raisonné. The book begins with an introduction providing a historiographic review. This is followed by a biography of the artist and an overview of his career and stylistic development. All his known works are included in the catalogue: some thirty history and genre paintings and an equal number of portraits, whose history and iconographic contents are discussed in depth. Special attention is devoted to Van Everdingen's large-scale commissions, such as the decoration of the organ in the Grote Kerk in Alkmaar and the three outstanding works he contributed to the decoration of the Oranjezaal. Over the years he received important commissions not only from the city of Alkmaar and institutions like the Hoogheemraadschap of Rijnland (the polder board of the Rhineland) but also from burghers in Alkmaar and Haarlem. The catalogue is followed by appendixes containing transcriptions and translations of archival documents, lists of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century references to paintings by Van Everdingen and a list of works no longer considered to be by is hand - language : english text.

The catalogue raisonné comprises all works painted by, or attributed to, the artist and known to the public since 1850. A luxuriously illustrated reference book, this publication forms the basis for all further research on the work of Aert van der Neer. The monograph also contains the results of new investigations into the life and work of such artists as Jochem and Rafael Camphuysen, Anthonie van Borssom, and others. A choice of quotations, taken from art-historical assessments made since 1800, completes the author's appraisal of Aert van der Neer's reputation. Complete bibliographies for each work, several indexes of former owners and present whereabouts, and a concordance with Hofstede de Groot's 1918 numbers facilitate the use of the catalogue by collectors, art dealers and art historians. Wolfgang Schulz (Friedrichstrasse 218, 10969 Berlin), born in 1943 in East Prussia, was formerly a member of the staff of both the Printroom and the Picture Gallery of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, and has worked at the Mauritshuis in The Hague. He has also served as director of severa Arent de Gelder was Rembrandt's last pupil. He was born in 1645 in the attractive provincial town of Dordrecht where N. Maes, S. van Hoogstraten, A. Cuyp and many other important Dutch painters of the 17th century had their home. However Arent de Gelder belongs to an entirely different generation. He started his career as a painter when the "Golden Age" of Dutch Art had come to its end. In the early sixties, as a young man he went to Amsterdam - the only occasion on which he seems to have left his native town for any length of time; then he had been accepted by Rembrandt to work in his studio, just about the period when he had entered his last heroic phase in painting. Arent de Gelder seems to have carried on the tradition of Rembrandt's approach to color far into the beginning of the 18th century. A careful analysis of Arent de Gelder's paintings will reveal that in truth he had a different understanding of the function of color within the conception visualized by him. Arent de Gelder's natural talent to use color in all its splendor is a constant source of joy when studying his work even if he is carried away by it to such a degree that at times he is neglecting the precision of basic design. Arent de Gelder, in a way an outsider within Dutch Painting of the Post-Rembrandt period, was completely unconcerned about the artistic aims and intentions of his contemporaries and he went his own way. Davies A Monograph, with a Catalogue Raisonné of Paintings by Alice I. Davies and Frederic J. Duparc 2001. 4to. 312 pp. text and 467 plts. and ills. (14 in color). Cloth bound ISBN 90-70288-27-3 This study of Allart van Everdingen (1621-1675) draws particular attention to his significant contribution to the history of art as the earliest painter of the landscape of Scandinavia. A native of Alkmaar, Everdingen started out painting marines in the Porcellis-de Vlieger tradition. His only known indigenous landscape from his first period is a dunescape in the style of his reputed teacher Pieter Molijn. In 1644 he traveled to Norway and Sweden where he made sketches of several identified sites. After his return to the Netherlands he specialized in Nordic scenes, characterized by craggy mountains and crashing waterfalls, quiet fjords or rivers, huge boulders, fir trees, and log cabins. Here, the influence of his second-named teacher Roelant Savery is discernible in the earliest works. These paintings were eagerly collected by his countrymen and emulated by other artists, most significantly by Holland's leading landscape painter Jacob van Ruisdael, who himself had no direct experience with the foreign subjects being portrayed. Everdingen lived in Haarlem from 1645 to 1652, and then moved to Amsterdam, where he remained for the rest of his life. (Ruisdael made the same move four or five years later.) His largest known commission was for six or seven pictures used to decorate the Trippenhuis, built in 1660-1662, at Amsterdam. By and large, this monograph text is a revision of the author's Harvard dissertation (1973; published in 1978), with the artist's biography substantially enlarged. The examination of his imitators and followers is expanded to include his pupil Gerard Edema, who was active in England before ca.1700, as well as many other artists in the Dutch, Germanic, and Scandinavian schools up to 1850. The catalogue raisonné of Everdingen's paintings is a collaborative effort by Alice I. Davies and Frederic J. Duparc. Like the chapters treating the painter's career in the monograph, the catalogue of the 179 authentic works is organized by subject - 22 marines, 146 Scandinavian landscapes, and 11 Netherlandish landscapes - with the dated pictures listed first and the remainder presented in chronological order. The other three sections comprise 22 "attributed paintings" not yet examined at firsthand by the authors, 35 "rejected paintings" in public collections, and 5 paintings lost from public collections, for which no reproduction exists. Cloth bound ISBN 90-70288-81-8 euros 325,00.-.- JAN VAN KESSEL is a monograph and catalogue raisonné introducing a little-known but talented Amsterdam follower of Jacob van Ruisdael. Many art professionals outside of the speciality of seventeenth- century Dutch landscape do not realize that he existed, with the result that his works sometimes are assigned to the contemporary (but unrelated) Antwerp painter of the same name. Few specialists are aware that the Dutch Jan van Kessel covered the entire range of subjects produced by his presumed teacher Jacob van Ruisdael, with the possible exception of marine painting. Ruisdael's style was not the only one he emulated; he also imitated his friend Meindert Hobbema (village scenes, water mills, woods), Allart van Everdingen (waterfalls), Jan Wijnants (wooded landscapes), Jan van de Cappelle (winterscenes), and others. A high percentage of the paintings in the accompanying catalogue were once attributed to these other artists (often with an authentic Kessel signature covered by a better-known name). Clarification of Jan van Kessel's production provides the solution to numerous problems of attribution plaguing the Ruisdael School. The monograph text starts with a critique of the artist's reception to date, both in terms of the public exhibition of his work and the appraisals of him in scholarly literature. Next, his biography is updated using primary and secondary sources, including un-published data from the Amsterdam Municipal Archives. Then, Jan van Kessel's paintings and drawings are given a general introduction, with special attention paid to the development that occurred in the way he signed his name. The main body of the monograph is devoted to his art, presented chronologically from the artist's documented start in 1661 until his early death in 1680. Discussion covers the internal development of his style, the interrelationships between paintings and drawings, and his dependency (and interdependency) on the production of other masters. Since the focus is on the paintings, the drawings are treated also in a separate chapter. The monograph ends with the brief identification of other minor Ruisdael followers whose drawings and paintings are con-fused with Kessel's, as the Ruisdael school is an area in particular need of further study. The catalogue raisonné contains fully documented entries (Provenance, Exhibitions, Literature) with discussions up to a thousand words in lenght. The 290 works catalogued are organized into six sections: Authentic (120), Problematic (19), Doubtful Paintings (44); Authentic (68), Problematic (13), Doubtful Drawings (26).
