Paperback. Very Near Fine in Wraps: shows only the most minute indications of use: the rear endpaper is creased at the upper corner tip; aside from the remainder marks, refered to below,is book is flawless. Binding square and secure; text clean. Very close to 'As New'. REMAINDER, showing small marks at both the top and bottom edges. NOT a Book-Club or Ex-Library. 8vo. 192pp. First Edition Thus; First Printing, so stated. First published in a hardcover edition by Knopf in 1980. Trade Paperback. I read this book when it first came out, and have since read it several times. It is an extraordinarily moving story about modern English children who, because of an act of political terrorism by which they are directly affected, are brought to confront the meaning of the Holocaust from the standpoint of children. The novel is written with a somber simplicity and elegance, yet it succeeds in evoking not just the events themselves, but the whole cultural context of modern European history. It contains, for instance, one of the most frightening versions of the Hansel and Gretel story that you are ever likely to read. This book is definitely not recommended for children, but it would be hard to imagine any adult not finding it a deeply moving experience. First Edition; First Printing, so stated.

Andre Dubus (1936 1999) was a distinguished American writer of short stories, novels, and essays. Although he did write one novel, The Lieutenant (1967) , Dubus considered himself primarily a writer of short stories and novellas. Throughout his career, he published most of his work in small, distinguished literary journals such as Ploughshares and Sewanee Review. Dubus remained loyal to a small publishing firm run by David R. Godine that published his first works. When larger book publishers approached him with more lucrative deals, Dubus stayed with Godine, switching only to Alfred A. Knopf towards the end of his career to assist with medical bills. Dubus's collections and novellas include: Separate Flights (1975) , Adultery and Other Choices (1977) , Finding a Girl in America (1980) , The Times Are Never So Bad (1983) , Voices from the Moon (1984) , The Last Worthless Evening (1986) , Selected Stories (1988) , Broken Vessels (1991) , Dancing After Hours (1996) , and Meditations from a Movable Chair (1998). His most celebrated book is the novel 'House of Sand and Fog' (1999) , which was both a finalist for the National Book Award and the basis for an Academy Award-nominated film of the same title. Several writing awards are named after Dubus. His papers are archived at McNeese State University and Xavier University in Louisiana and at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas in Austin. 'Voices From the Moon' This is a poetic novel, rich with imagery and lyricism. The story is told primarily from the eyes of a twelve year-old. The novel relates, in a somewhat dreamy and stark fashion, the results of a man's deciding to marry his son's ex-wife. The novel focuses on family and feelings, on Catholicism and guilt of sin and retribution, on what was, what is, what could or will be as it is intertwined in our inevitable link with others around us. This is a beautiful, haunting work. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 126 pages.
