Hardbound. Condition: VG+. First. Brown paper on boards with gilt embossed lettering, [50] pp, over 20 color images, most full-page. First printing limited to 1500 copies. Catalogue for an exhibition September to October 2010. From the essay: The signature heterogeneous skein of her paintings demonstrates the many variations of patinas and viscosities, which she achieves with oil paint. Within each painting the surface properties range from mattes that seem to soak deep into the canvas, to glosses that appear to hover on the surface as if they have not yet fully dried. The contrasts are the result of applications of paint, which the artist mixes using the simplest of materials: pigment and linseed oil, dose according to calculated equations. The paintings that emerge out of this process of gestation are testaments of an intimate knowledge, handling, and love of oil paint, both as a material and as a medium.

"Alice Neel was one of the great American painters of the twentieth century and a pioneer among women artists. Sympathetic to the expressionists of Europe and Scandinavia and to the darker arts of Spanish painting, Alice Neel's style and approach was distinctively her own." - artists website.
