Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Book Club Edition. One was called "a tin can on a shingle," the other "a half-submerged crocodile." And yet, on a March Day in 1862, in Hampton Roads, Virginia, after a five-hour duel, these two ships were to change the course not only of America's Civil War but of naval warfare forever. The ships were the U.S.S. Monitor and the C.S.S. Virginia (formerly the U.S.S. Merrimack). History knows this epic clash best as the battle between the Monitor and the "Merrimack" and, in this book, the author thoroughly documents and analyzes this famous duel, based on letters, diaries, and memoirs of men who lived through the battle itself and of those who witnessed it from afar. What Mr. Davis has achieved here is the first full scale history of the first two "modern" armored ships.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Book Club Edition. This is the story of the last desperate heartbreaking, cruel year of the Civil War. In the winter of 1864, the Army of the Potomac stood at the crossroads. The old army, fired with the spirit of men who had joined out of love of country and who had long since become disillusioned, was gone. The new army, made up of mercenaries, bounty-jumpers, and a hard core of seasoned and embittered veterans, had lost sight of its original goal of radiant victory and had become a ruthless machine of war. Its leader was General Ulysses S. Grant, a seedy little man who instilled no enthusiasm in his followers and little respect in his enemies. Opposing Grant and the Army of the Potomac was Robert E. Lee, the last great knight of the battle. He was a god to his men and scourge to his antagonists. The stage was set. Somehow everyone knew that from no one there would be little glory in victory; little pity in defeat. With unmatched brilliance, Bruce Catton takes the reader through the battles of the Wilderness, the Bloody Angle, Cold Harbor, the Crater, and on through the horrible months to a moment at Appomattox. He makes Grant, Meade, Sheridan, and others come alive in all their failings and triumphs and humanness.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Book Club Edition. The events of Sunday morning, December 7, 1941, have always been shrouded in mystery. Japanese bombs had scarcely stopped falling on Pearl Harbor before shocked and angry Americans were calling for an investigation of the catastrophe, one of the most sudden and complete defeats in United States history. Within weeks, Franklin D. Roosevelt had appointed a blue-ribbon committee, headed by Supreme Court Justice Owen Roberts, to look into the events leading up to the Japanese attack. Its judgement placed the blame on the Hawaiian commanders, General Short and Admiral Kimmel, in spite of much contradictory evidence. Their disgrace aroused a storm of controversy. Pleading a wartime need for secrecy, and government kept a tight lid on the facts surrounding the Pearl Harbor disaster. There were rumors of whitewash, and knowledge cryptanalysts talked of a Japanese order given in the highly classified Consular Code (which, under extreme security wraps, the United States had been decoding for some time). This so-called "winds execute" signal, the said, had warned Washington of imminent attack-a warning never passed on to Hawaii. Eight more investigations followed, during and after the war, as partisans on both sides-field officers versus the Washington establishment-traded sensational and sometimes incredible assertions, accusations, and denials. Witnesses changed their testimony under pressure; files were destroyed or "mislaid;" and key government figures "forgot" where they were, what they said, and what they did in the crucial hours preceding the attack.' Infamy is the tenth investigation, a fascinating and disturbing chronicle that raises and answers important questions. Was there or was there not a "winds execute" message? Why were Short and Kimmel not given vital information from the broken Japanese codes? Could Roosevelt have known of the approaching carrier force and have made a decision not to act? Perhaps most important, could the Americans have ambushed the Japanese, thereby averting or shortening the war? Infamy is history at its best: a story of spies and suspense, widespread irresponsibility, and an international diplomatic game whose players tragically miscalculated the odds-at an untold cost in lives.
