Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. In October 1913 the German Expressionist artist Emil Nolde (1867-1956) and his wife, Danish actress Ada Vilstrup, joined a government-sponsored expedition to German New Guinea, travelling by way of Siberia, Korea, Japan, China and the Philippines. Nolde had a lifelong fascination with the art of non-European cultures, admiring in particular qualities of directness and expressiveness that he found in their arts.During this yearlong trip Nolde constantly drew and painted what he saw around him, principally lush, intensely colorful tropical scenes and portraits of indigenous peoples. This little gift book presents around 40 of the now famous landscapes and portraits that Nolde created during his travels. A charming gift-book homage to artist Emil Nolde's dogs as they appear in his workThe great love story between the painter Emile Nolde (1867-1956) and his wife Ada began with a dog in Copenhagen, when Ada met the poor painter taking a walk. The farmer's son and the pastor's daughter married in 1902, and the first mutual dog came into the house in 1904--brought in so that Ada would have some company, while the painter locked himself away in his studio. The many dogs that lived with the couple also featured in Nolde's work, appearing in loving portraits, vividly-colored oil paintings, endearing watercolors and striking pen-and-ink drawings. Emil Nolde: Dogs explores the importance of this theme in the painter's work in a charming gift-book format, featuring paintings, writings by the artist about animals and photographs documenting the Noldes' idyllic rural life in Germany and Denmark. Taking collaged newspaper for his canvas, Tony Swain paints landscapes and abstracted patterns, fastening his works directly onto the gallery walls, to create an effect that verges on newsprint sculpture. The layers of newspaper text and imagery blend and interlock with Swain's acrylic strokes, creating wonderfully elusive images that oscillate in and out of comprehension. This elegantly produced monograph surveys recent works. The first in-dept study of Swain's work, featuring 40 of his surreal collages. Texts on his influences are also included. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. A bricoleur of cosmologies, cities and signs, a hypnosis subject, a collaborator and a collector of art and ethnographic objects, Matt Mullican has embodied and redefined the wilder horizons of conceptual art over the course of his 40-year career. From the start, Mullican has tackled only the big themes: the self, which with some courage he has dismantled under hypnosis, performing and making art as another Matt Mullican named "That Person"; and the universe, which he has imagined as a proliferating cosmology of signs, taking form under his "Five Worlds" concept or as a city. In this bilingual volume of conversations with Koen Brams and Dirk Pueltau, Mullican also proves himself an articulate, generous talker. The conversations are themed in five chapters: "Collaboration," "Cosmologies," "Hypnosis," "City" and "Collections." Across these seemingly diverse topics, what emerges as the unifying principle throughout Mullican's activities is his exemplariness as a true "cosmonaut of inner space." Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Emil Nolde kept close ties to Berlin: from 1905 on, he usually spent the winter months in the capital. The painter had his own live-in studio first on Tauentzienstrasse and then later on Bayernallee, in a building that was later destroyed, in a bombing raid in 1944. In the late 1920s, Nolde even asked van der Rohe build a house for him in Dahlem. This plan was never realized, but in many of his paintings, Berlin's character plays an important role. In gathering works by Nolde around a particular theme, this large monograph revives a DuMont tradition. Nolde's vivid pictorial creations are accompanied by numerous documents relating to his various stays in Berlin and the importance of the "Deutsches Theater" and Expressionist dance for his art. Includes a stunning selection of Noldes paintings, watercolours and prints depicting the nightlife of Berlin in the early twentieth century. The Bauhaus, established in Weimar in 1919, was probably the most influential school of design of the twentieth century, counting among its teachers and pupils such talents as Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer and Marianne Brandt. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Published in association with the Nolde Foundation, this is the sixth volume in DuMont's series devoted to painter Emil Nolde (1867-1956). As a member of Die Bruecke (The Bridge), Nolde was known for his vigorous brushwork, rhythmic compositions and extraordinary use of color. A farmer's son from the German-Danish frontier, Nolde traveled widely throughout Europe: Switzerland, Denmark, France, Italy, Sweden, England, Austria, Belgium, Holland and Spain. While the artist is usually associated with paintings and watercolors of his native gardens in Germany, this latest edition focuses on his European travels and how he translated his wanderlust onto canvas. Guided by imagination, Nolde created an integrated vision of the world that celebrated a love of nature and all that was around him. Featuring mountain panoramas and studies of the people he encountered, Emil Nolde: Wanderlust gives new perspectives on this leading figure in German Expressionism. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. "Some forty-odd years after Bruce Nauman began tweaking the conventions of studio practice and the hallowed persona of the 'artist-as-seer, '" Pamela M. Lee wrote in Artforum not long ago, "his station in postwar art history rests secure. His influence--whether through his affectless, task-based performances, his sculptural castings of negative space, or his intermedia mash-ups of language, video and noise--is everywhere apparent in contemporary art." Indeed, from the American artist's early work in sculpture and video, made in the 1960s, through his famous spiral of neon letters spelling out "the true artist helps the world by revealing mystic truths," which at once summarized and opened to critique the perennial mystique of the artist, up through his three-venue Golden Lion Award-winning exhibition at the 2009 Venice Biennale, Nauman's work has long been an indispensable part of the narrative of recent American art. This essential volume, published in DuMont's fantastic Collector's Choice series, treats these and other recurrent themes of his oeuvre, such as sound, language, corporeality and dance, reproducing works from across his career and and providing a new standard overview of this ever-popular artist. Why is Bruce Nauman numbered among the best-known artists in the world? What it is about his many-sided oeuvre that has fascinated viewers for decades? Eugen Blume discusses these questions dealing with the works produced to date by one of the most outstanding living artist personalities. The text begins with Bruce Nauman's own recognition that his works development derives from a disappointment in the 'conditio humana.' The author therefore inquires about the conditions of human existence in the nineteen sixties and seventies and what test assemblies Nauman developed to assure himself of this. In his performances, the artist investigates elemental movements in terms of their significance for art as well as for human existence per se. It is an antiillusionist procedure, a disappointment of references of reality that are also understood as an antiform. Nauman does without aesthetic or narrative dimensions in his works, playing instead with the willingness of the viewer to deal with this work by means of his own actions. Starting with the conversations he carried out with Meredith Monk in 1967 and his encounter with John Cage and the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, the informative, 'descriptive' role of dance and the body is examined as one of the central themes in Nauman's work. Aside from dance movements, sound also takes on particular significance throughout his work. This interest in sound deriving from Nauman's own intense relationship to music is joined here by his language-oriented work. Since his days as a student, his dealings with puns promoted by his reading of the works of Wittgenstein are of considerable significance in his oeuvre and are also analysed in the text. . Exhibition: Hamburger Bahnhof from May 2010 . Biennale award winner 2009, one of the most significant artists of the present day . Extraordinary series to collect The artist Bruce Nauman (born 1941 Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA) is one of the most famous artists in the world. His works were shown in the United States Pavilion at the 2009 Venice Biennale which was decorated as the best of the 53rd Biennale. Nauman dealings with photography, video, sculpture, neon lights and installations; sound and language are always also key elements of his work. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Thomas Schtte has frequently cast himself into the role of a maverick--remained remote from the work of his artistic mentor, distanced himself from the statements of each ephemeral Zeitgeist and increasingly contradicted his own positions--and in so doing has become one of the most influential artists of his generation. Shifting from text to image to object to book, his work juxtaposes biographical moments with contemporary events, oscillates between the aspiration to shape the public reception of architecture and monumental sculpture and the conjunctive of model-maker, and projects avant-garde ideas onto traditional forms of art. With meticulous rigor, Ulrich Loock has observed the evolution of Schtte's output over the past 25 years. Underpinning his lucid overview is a series of intensive discussions between the author and artist on the genesis and history of particular works. This well-designed book is the most comprehensive monograph of the artist's work to date, and provides profound insight into Schtte's work through detailed discussions of the pieces. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Volume 1 in the Collector's Choice Artists' Monographs from the Friedrich Christian Flick Collection features the work of Canadian artist Rodney Graham as he strolls, via his works, through Modernism. On Graham's meandering itinerary through photography, literature, music, art, film, psychology, and linguistics, we encounter Richard Wagner, Stphane Mallarm, Edgar Allen Poe, Sigmund Freud, and Donald Judd, not to mention the prevalence of cinema and popular music. The contradictions in his work--gravity and play, reverential homage and scenarized self-presentation--show Graham to be a contemporary melancholic. This is the most comprehensive and insightful monograph of the artist's work to date. Essay by Dorothea Zwirner. Foreword by Friedrich Christian Flick.
