Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1975 U.K. hardcover with dust jacket. Facsimile reprint of the 1890 original. Well-preserved UNREAD COPY is bright and clean inside and out with very minor shelf-rubbing only. Nice copy! 400 pp., with 90 illustrations throughout the book. "Seventy years after the death of George IV there appeared two volumes covering the social history of England during the period of the Regency -- a time which many people could still remember with either love or loathing. This reprint consists of Volume One of this famous work, written by a man who had complete understanding of the time. John Ashton succeeded in writing a book about the people, for the people, and illustrating it profusely himself. All the facts were obtained from original and first-hand sources and some of the most interesting events are documented. For example, in 1814 the Great Frost Fair was held on the river Thames. The author describes in detail the weather conditions which brought about this momentous occasion. There was an increase in the price of coal since London then depended on 'Coal from Newcastle,' and the freezing of her river cut off supplies completely. John Ashton also mentions the habit of wife-selling in 1815. An unusual practice to say the least and not particularly profitable! Impressions made by the famous on the general public provide fascinating reading and the political events of the time also arouse much interest. Together with a large number of often amusing drawings, this book covers the period up to the end of 1815 and is well worth careful study.".

Condition: Como nuevo. The frieze of the temple of Apollo Epikourios at Bassai, the Arcadia region of the Peloponnese, is one of the most suggestive examples of reliefs from the end of the 5th century B.C., now preserved in the British Museum. Since 2009, a group of artists directed by Jorge Egea and Ramon Casanova, professors at the Department of Sculpture, University of Barcelona, has studied the frieze with the same interest that artists in 19th century revisited the archaeological ruins. Grouped under the name Equipo Confluencias The Crossing Lab, they recapture the original gaze of art, using the basic techniques of drawing and photography to update the meaning of classical art and to reveal new readings for contemporary observers. This book presents a collection of unpublished texts and images concerning the interpretation of the frieze of Apollo Epikourios, analysing the work through knowledge gained from artistic practice, that leads us to the concept of re-embodiment . The results of this project, undertaken at the British Museum, will be exhibited at the Museum of Classical Archaeology of the Faculty of Classics, University of Cambridge. DJ has wear, soiling, chips and tears. Norman De Mattos Bentwich OBE MC (28 February 1883 - 8 April 1971) was a British barrister and legal academic. He was the British-appointed attorney-general of Mandatory Palestine and a lifelong Zionist. Bentwich played a major role in the development of Palestinian law. From 1932 to 1951 Bentwich occupied the Chair of International Relations at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His first lecture, on "Jerusalem, City of Peace", was disrupted by Jewish students who considered him too conciliatory towards the Arabs. Several of the ringleaders were suspended. He was one of the Jewish members of Palestine Administration who in 1929 joined Brit Shalom, a society founded to find rapprochement between Jews and Arabs in Palestine. In his book, Mandate Memories, he stated that "the Balfour Declaration was not an impetuous or sentimental act of the British government, as has been sometimes represented, or a calculated measure of political warfare. It was a deliberate decision of British policy and adopted only after full consultation with the United States and with other Allied Nations." Judah Leon Magnes (July 5, 1877 - October 27, 1948) was a prominent Reform rabbi in both the United States and Mandatory Palestine. He is best remembered as a leader in the pacifist movement of the World War I period, his advocacy of a binational Jewish-Arab state in Palestine, and as one of the most widely recognized voices of 20th century American Reform Judaism. Magnes first visited Ottoman Palestine in 1907, growing a beard in solidarity with the Jewish colonists. At Jaffa he was told of the plans for a Jewish-only town, north of Jaffa, to be called Tel Aviv. He was skeptical that it would ever come about. He made an extensive tour of the region, traveling on horseback and camping at night. The tour included reaching the summit of Mount Hermon. He returned to America by way of the seventh Zionist Congress in The Hague. His wife accompanied him on his second visit in 1912. They stayed in Jerusalem where there was some discussion of establishing a Hebrew University. They also visited Merhavia and Degania in the Galilee.Magnes agreed, however, with the overall anti-Zionist attitudes of Reform Judaism at the time; he strongly disapproved of nationalistic aspects within Judaism, which Zionism represented and supported. To him, Jews living in the Diaspora and Jews living in Palestine were of equal significance to Judaism and Jewish culture; he agreed that a renewed Jewish community in Eretz Israel would enhance Jewish life within the Diaspora. Magnes emigrated to Mandate Palestine in 1922 and maintained that emigration to Eretz Israel was a matter of individual choice; it did not reflect any kind of "negation of the Diaspora", or support for Zionism. He thought that the land of Israel should be built in a "decent manner", or not built at all.In both America and Palestine, Magnes played a key role in founding the internationally reputed Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1918 along with Albert Einstein and Chaim Weizmann. However, the three did not get along, and when, in 1928, Magnes, who was initially responsible only for the university's finances and administrative staff, had his authority extended to academic and professional matters, Einstein resigned from the Board of Governors. Magnes served as the first chancellor of the Hebrew University (1925) and later as its president (1935-1948). Magnes believed that the university was the ideal place for Jewish and Arab cooperation, and worked tirelessly to advance this goal.Magnes's responded to the 1929 Arab revolt in Palestine with a call for a binational solution to Palestine. Magnes dedicated the rest of his life to reconciliation with the local Arabs; he particularly objected to the concept of a specifically Jewish state. In his view, Palestine should be neither Jewish nor Arab.
