"Hip: The History is the story of how American pop culture has evolved throughout the twentieth century to its current position as world cultural touchstone. How did hip become such an obsession? From sex and music to fashion and commerce, John Leland tracks the arc of ideas as they move from subterranean Bohemia to Madison Avenue and back again. Hip: The History examines how hip has helped shape -- and continues to influence -- America's view of itself, and provides an incisive account of hip's quest for authenticity. / John Leland is a reporter for the New York Times and former editor in chief of Details, and he was an original columnist at SPIN magazine. Robert Christgau of the Village Voice called him 'the best American postmod critic (the best new American rock critic period),' and Chuck D of Public Enemy said the nasty parts of the song 'Bring the Noise' were written about him. He lives in Manhattan's East Village with his wife, Risa, and son, Jordan." - Publisher. Size: 8vo.

Set against the brilliantly drawn backdrop of India at the turn of the millennium, this book tells the story of a young couple, penniless but gloriously in love. Obsessed with each other, they move from a small town in the big city, where the man, who dreams of being a writer, works feverishly on a novel, stopping only to feed his ceaseless desire for his beautiful wife. A chance occurrence allows the lovers to abandon the city for a mist-shrouded spur of th lower Himalayas and move into a sprawling house, which they hope will embody their love At first they pursue their deep physical need with a reckless intensity. But during renovations of the house, a set of diaries written by the original inhabitant a glamorous American adventuress- is unearthed, and the narrator finds himself. irresistibly drawn away from his wife and thus into another world and time, into the hole history. As his life and love fall apart, he slowly begins to uncover the dark secrets at the heart her story, until the shocking truth is laid bare an all certainties are overturned. Inventive, playful, heartbreaking, brimming with ideas and memorable characters, the book celebrates the chaotic spirit of a country during a time of great change. It also offers, a searing, lucid prose, a deeply sensual and moving meditation on the nature of desire, history, truth and art. This is a major novel by one of the most significant new voices of his generation.

Stated First Edition. Dust jacket protected in a mylar cover. "Charismatic, brilliant, and beautiful, the American writer Natalie Clifford Barney, who lived in Paris for most of her long life, is best known for three things: her Left Bank literary salon, often acknowledged as the most important of the twentieth century her books of epigrams about life, love, and the nature of womanhood and a liberated approach to sex that she refused to cloak, even in the midst of the Victorian era. Born to great wealth in 1876 and raised in Washington, D.C., and Bar Harbor, Maine, Barney was expected to marry well and lead the conventional life of a privileged society woman. But Natalie wasn't interested in marriage and made no secret of the fact that she was attracted to women. Raised by a nonconformist and artistic mother -- the painter Alice Pike Barney -- Natalie developed an early interest in poetry and the arts. Moving to Paris at the century's turn, she plunged into the city's vibrant social and literary scene, quickly becoming known among the young, cutting-edge literati as 'the rarest and most intelligent woman' of her time. She was equally renowned as a notorious seductress, one who effortlessly conquered the hearts of women and the minds of men. The story of her first notorious love affair -- with Liane de Pougy, the most sought-out courtesan of Belle poque Paris -- was transformed by Liane, with Natalie's assistance, into a bestselling 1901 roman clef. Natalie's lovers continued to write about her for decades -- sometimes impishly (Colette), or with brutal honesty (Lucie Delarue-Mardrus), or with a disturbing mixture of anger, worship, and grief (the tragic poet Rene Vivien). Men, including would-be lovers such as Remy de Gourmont or Bernard Bereson, tended to write of Barney with admiration, even reverence. Ultimately, her powerful salon and compelling personality attracted the greatest figures of twentieth-century arts and letters, including Edna St. Vincent Millay, Isadora Duncan, Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, and Truman Capote. A dazzling literary biography, Wild Heart: A Life is a story of a true rebel who came of age at a time when rebels weren't admired -- particularly if they were women -- and who has since become an icon to many others. Set against the backdrop of two different societies, Victorian America and Belle poque Europe, Wild Heart: A Life beautifully captures the richness of their love." - Publisher. Size: 8vo.

"In 1936 the Schwarts, an immigrant family desperate to escape Nazi Germany, settle in a small town in upstate New York, where the father, a former high school teacher, is demeaned by the only job he can get: gravedigger and cemetery caretaker. After local prejudice and the family's own emotional frailty result in unspeakable tragedy, the gravedigger's daughter, Rebecca, begins her astonishing pilgrimage into America, an odyssey of erotic risk and imaginative daring, ingenious self-invention, and, in the end, a bittersweet--but very 'American'--triumph. 'You are born here, they will not hurt you'--so the gravedigger has predicted for his daughter, which will turn out to be true. In The Gravedigger's Daughter, Oates has created a masterpiece of domestic yet mythic realism, at once emotionally engaging and intellectually provocative: an intimately observed testimony to the resilience of the individual to set beside such predecessors as The Falls, Blonde, and We Were the Mulvaneys. / Joyce Carol Oates has written some of the most enduring fiction of our time, including the national bestsellers We Were the Mulvaneys and Blonde (a finalist for the National Book Award), and the New York Times bestsellers The Falls (winner of the 2005 Prix Femina) and The Gravedigger's Daughter." - Publisher. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Balthus was a 20th century European artist, primarily a painter, whose works were realistic but psychologically introverted, often depicting pubescent girls in erotic and voyeristic poses. His work was known and admired by other European writers and artitists including Andre Breton and Pablo Picasso. This English translation from the French is by Benjamin Ivry, with an introduction by Joyce Carol Oates. First English editon, first printing (as stated, with complete numberline). About 6 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches, 237 pages in pictorial, paper-covered boards, the front cover a portrait of the young Balthus holding a brush, the back showing a drawing of the artist. The end papers show a color photo of a pallette with cans full of brushes in the background. The text is illustrated with b & w and color photos. The boards show only light bumping at the spine ends and to the lower corner of the front cover, o/w boards are without noticeable flaws or damage. The text is clean, complete and unmarked, binding tight and square. Not ex-library, not remaindered. The dustjacket, which repeats the art on the covers with the addition of white lettering on the front panel and a quotation from the book on the back, shows a touch of wear on the edges and spines but no tears, creases, scratches or significant wear. Balthus' work has been described as "alluring but disturbing," and in the U.S. there have been calls and petitions for removal of one of his paintings from the NY Metropolitan Museum of Art though the same work was exhibited in Germany without incident. This may say more about the U.S. and/or Germany than about Balthus' art.
