Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The railway era had yet to make its impact on the Clyde during the period 1864 to 1888: this was the age of the private steamer company. The 1860s and '70s were the heyday of the all the way steamboat service down the Clyde coast. It was not until the 1880s that the greater convenience of new rail and steamer routes and the increasing pollution of the river eroded a trade by which many steamboat proprietors have previously prospered. This book traces the development of Clyde steamers from the middle of the 1860s to the eve of the railway invasion. From the legendary Iona to the much-loved Lucy Ashton, each ship is described, together with the services they offered. These details are set aginst the social background of the period, the personalities, the engineering developments and the disasters that made this such a fascinating era. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Born and educated in Edinburgh, he became an advocate in 1800 and gained a reputation for persuasive handling of seemingly desperate cases, most famously that of Helen MacDougall, common law wife of the body-snatcher William Burke, in 1828. Like his compatriot and fellow judge Thomas Jeffrey, Cockburn was converted to Whig principles, contributing articles to Jeffrey's Edinburgh Review and writing his biography (Life of Lord Jeffrey, 1852). Although this was the only major work Cockburn published during his lifetime, his reputation as a man of letters rests principally on his journals, which were published posthumously as Memorials of His Time (1856), The Journal of Henry Cockburn (1874) and Circuit Journeys (1888). Together they present an enormously informative and valuable portrait of the period and many of its most significant personalities. Cockburn became Rector of Glasgow University in the early 1830s and a Lord of Session in 1834, and was actively involved in the conservation of Edinburgh's historic buildings. Cockburn's published works are complemented by his letters, largely unpublished but preserved by many of his correspondents and their families. This selection of 180 [new] letters provides much fresh information about his career as advocate, judge, Whig activist, genial family man and pioneer in building conservation. Together with the rest of his works, they confirm him as a key figure in that generation of thinkers and artists who followed on from those who made the eighteenth-century Scottish Enlightenment such a rich moment in Europe's cultural history. It is destined to become another classic in the tradition of the Memorials. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In the summer of 1411, the ageing Donald of Isla, Lord of the Isles, invaded mainland Scotland with a huge, battle-hardened army, only to be fought to a bloody standstill on the plateau of Harlaw, fifteen miles from Aberdeen, a town he had threatened to sack. One of the greatest battles in Scottish history, described by hardened mediaeval chroniclers as 'atrocious', 'Reid Harlaw' left some 3,000 dead and wounded. Dismissed by Scott as a 'Celt v. Saxon' power struggle, it has faded from historical memory, other than in the north-east of Scotland. Written records in Latin, Scots, Gaelic and English are presented in their original form, and with transcriptions and translations. Two major ballads are analysed, one contemporary, and one fabricated over 350 years later - which is still sung. Lowland views dominate, because of the loss and destruction of Highland records, notably those of the Lords of the Isles themselves. The histories themselves fall into two groups - those written at or around the time, and those composed some 300 years later. These later accounts form the basis of most modern descriptions of the battle, but they tend to be romantic and highly imaginative, creating noble order where chaos once existed. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Using original sources, some for the first time, we witness Hume's disappointment with the reception of his Treatise of Human Nature - 'it fell dead-born from the press' - although it is now seen as a pivotal work in European thinking, and follow his adventures during a farcical invasion of France. His Essays and History at last brought him the fame he had sought, but also caused the General Assembly of the Kirk of Scotland to attempt to excommunicate him. The accusation that Hume was an atheist is disproved while, more light-heartedly, his time as a diplomat shows him at the heart of the gossip of pre-Revolutionary Paris, where he was Le Bon David. Back in Edinburgh, James Boswell nicknamed him 'The Great Infidel' yet, like everyone else, sought invitations to Hume's well-stocked table and wine cellar. Hume never married, although he was always a favourite with the ladies for whist and conversation, and he was involved in a preposterous courtship in Turin. He also had a lengthy intellectual involvement with a married aristocrat who was already another man's mistress. The Great Infidel gives a rounded picture of the man, the century in which he lived, his thought, and, above all, his humanity. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This is the first time that Rob Roy's life has been written with a full range of sources. The picture that emerges is indeed striking, but not heroic. A man deeply wronged and oppressed, forced into outlawry, has to be modified by the clear evidence that he was only outlawed after undertaking a careful plan to swindle his creditors. The staunch Jacobite is revealed as a man who supplied intelligence to the government against them, the supposed warrior-leader never fought in a battle, and the reputed duellist instead was only known to have fought one duel, which he lost.Yet in some ways Roy remains an attractive figure. The fact that he survived, in spite of the odds against him, is a remarkable tribute to his tenacity of both body and spirit and to his charm that has persuaded most historians of his version of his life instead of that of his enemies. With this book Scotland may lose a hero of the old-fashioned and unreal sort, but it possesses a Rob Roy whose life-story emerges as one that was dramatic and certainly more human. This radical revision of popular views on Rob Roy is based on much recently discovered material and is the first new biography for thirty years. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The answers are all in an expanded and revised edition of Edinburgh Curiosties. A Capital Cornucopia, and combines both volumes. Thomson and Coghill have trawled through the city's characters to bring together a collection of the men and women who scandalised and inspired the city over the years. But in addition to the notorious, like the Porteous Riot, Deacon William Brodie - the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's Jekyll and Hyde - or Madeleine Smith, they look at other lesser known, but nevertheless fascinating, people and events. Stories you've maybe heard something about but don't know the detail. They also float intriguing speculation like the possibility of members of Ned Kelly's gang carrying out armed robberies in Leith after the bushranger was hanged in Australia. The result is a fascinating dip into Edinburgh's rich and varied past, which will appeal to natives and visitors alike. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Dr Lachlan Grant (1871-1945), general practitioner and campaigner, was an important figure in the public life of the Highlands, deeply involved in industrial disputes in the early twentieth century at the Ballachulish slate quarries, where he was employed as a doctor for the workers. He was also active politically, both in the Liberal Party and the early years of the Scottish National Party, and was a prolific journalist, writing on medical and wider political, social and economic issues in the Highlands, particularly mental health care in the region. An active campaigner in the promotion of economic and social development of the Highlands, he placed special emphasis on improved health administration in the region. He was a key contributor to the Dewar Report (1912), which led to the establishment of the Highlands and Islands Medical Board in 1913, considered by many to be a 'proto-National Health Service'. He was a star pupil of Edinburgh medical school, who went on to general practice in the Highlands and Islands, while continuing medical research in his own private laboratory to work on problems such as tuberculosis (which reached epidemic proportions in the interwar Highlands), anaemia and eye health.
