Both books are a semi-autobiographical collection of letters authored by Lieutenant Edward Streeter. The character through which Streeter writes is a good-natured, uneducated soldier named Bill who writes to his significant other, Mable, during World War I. "F. A. Stokes & Co." and the "Fowler Brothers" are both named on the brochure.
