Hardbound. Condition: VG. Blue cloth, gilt letters on spine & front cover. 108 pp., followed by 162 bw plates on pages. "Many books have been written concerning the major, and indeed some of the minor, English porcelain factories, yet, strangely enough, the history and productions of the Salopian factory at Caughley and of tis successor at Coalport have suffered an unjust neglect. It is well to acknowledge at the outset that the productions of the Caughley factory have not greatly excited the attention of the connoisseur, chiefly, no doubt, because those productions consisted mainly of useful wares printed in underglaze blue. Nevertheless, the Caughley factory, under Thomas Turner, occupied, as we shall see, an important position in regard to the development of the China-making Industry in the Staffordshire Potteries, and for that reason alone appears worthy of a fuller record than has, so far, been vouchsafed to it. There are links between Caughley and the Worcester factories of Dr. Wall, Flight's and Chamberlain's, and an understanding of these relationships is necessary for a full appreciation of the position of the various Engilsh porcelain manufactories of the eighteenth century. In regard to the Coalport factory, very little has been written, and a great deal of research still remains to be done, particularly in the matter of the indentification of the work of the artists employed in and out of the factory. I can only pretend to have touched upon this aspect of the productions of the works at Coalport, the factory pattern books have yielded many names, and it remains to future scholars to identify their work. #251 of 500 copies. Uncommon.
