Fans have been asking for still photos of those lovely ladies in the movies since the days when producers declined to even list their names for fear they'd ask for bigger salaries. (Mary Pickford was initially identified by fans merely as "that curly haired girl.") And if charming persons of the female persuasion want to put on bathing suits or negligee and pose with "come-hither" looks in puzzling locations, it's not our place to object. (Though in an era when the average 12-year-old can find much more erotic material Online, some of the results can now verge on the goofy -- the author admitting that with the breakdown of the old studio system, the "pin-up era" seems to have tapered to an end in the 1970s.) It's also interesting that some of the Black-and-white "pre-Code" stills from the teens and '20s remain more erotic than those of the trying-too-hard Technicolor 1950s. Nonetheless, with a few curious absences, here they all are, confirming that Hedy Lamarr and Raquel Welch and Claudia Cardinale, Ann-Margret and Ursula Andress and Stella Stevens and Jill St. John were indeed great beauties, while Joan Crawford and Barbara Stanwyck clearly seem to have made it on some other set of skills. 280 pp. including Index, now reduced from $17.50.
