Widerstand gegen die Apartheid: Beinahe ihr gesamtes Leben lebte und schrieb sie in einem Südafrika, das von Apartheid gespalten war. B. der 1959 gegründete Pan Africanist Congress. Gordimer fühlte sich folglich doppelt ausgegrenzt: durch die Weißen aufgrund des Apartheidregimes, durch die Schwarzen wegen ihrer Hautfarbe. Die Ausgrenzung progressiver Weißer intensivierte sich in den 1970ern mit der Geburt der black consciousness Bewegung. Diese Bewegung erstrebte die Befreiung der Schwarzen auch auf einer psychologischen Ebene und sah die Beteiligung Weißer, die im Namen Schwarzer sprachen und handelten, als Verschärfung deren psychologischer Abhängigkeit. Gordimer akzeptierte, dass die Schwarzen ihre Zukunft selber bestimmen mussten: ein künftiges Südafrika, in dem 'Rasse' keine Rolle mehr spiele, sondern das durch die schwarze Mehrheit.
