Since there are already so many, what could possibly justify the existence of yet another? This one contains, of course, a different set of writings from those already in existence - a selection which may be more to the taste of some readers, and less to that of others. But what underlies the selection? More than anything else, it is the uncomfortable feeling, born of bitter experience in teaching introductory courses in aesthetics, that most anthologies of aesthetic writings do not have the students in mind so much as the instructors. Most students in introductory aesthetics classes have not had more than a course or two in philosophy; they come to a course in aesthetics without a clear conceptual apparatus; but they want very much to be enlightened on some of the problems that have arisen in their experience and discussion of (and sometimes, creation of) music, painting, sculpture, architecture, poetry, drama, and novels. These students, serious and intense, are put off by discussions of abstract points that are of interest exclusively to philosophers. The issues seem to them remote from their own vital interest in the arts, and the readings to which they are typically subjected are also geared to the tastes and interests of philosophers. Many of these readings are of the highest quality; they come from journals of philosophy, in which professors of aesthetics exchange views with their colleagues. But non-professionals in philosophy simply cannot follow the intricacies of argument in these readings, and their value is lost upon these readers. Had I been assembling an anthology designed for teachers of philosophy, who are already conversant with areas of philosophy other than aesthetics, I would have chosen an entirely different set of readings. But for non-philosophers interested in some of the problems of aesthetics, the readings included here seem appropriate. They are, at any rate, among those that have evoked the most enthusiasm from my own students in introductory courses in aesthetics over a period of some years . . . Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

SUB-TITLE: Political Practices in Washington's Virginia. BOOK NUMBER: 93239. ALSO KNOWN AS: Originally Published as Gentlemen Freeholders. CONTENTS: 1 Behind the Virginia Dynasty 2 Tumults and Riots 3 The Vulgar Herd 4 Swilling the Planters with Bumbo 5 Gentlemen of Long-Tailed Families 6 County Oligarchies 7 The House of Burgesses 8 The Pathway to Power 9 The Eighteenth Century to the Twentieth; Appendices; Bibliographical Note; References; Index. SYNOPSIS: Virginia produced four men - Washington, Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe - who provided leadership for the first thirty years of our nation's life. In this perceptive and dramatic history, Professor Sydnor has examined the social climate in which these men were trained and the political practices by which they were elected. Here is a vivid picture of late eighteenth-century Virginia. Without romanticizing or unnecessary detail, Washington and "the Virginia dynasty" are brought convincingly to life. The political backdrop against which they moved is carefully recreated, giving us new insight into the making of leaders in a democracy. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
