Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. 'A faker,' said Orson Welles, 'makes fools of the experts. So, who's the expert? Whos the faker?'Griffith Review 79 lifts the curtain on fakes, frauds and forgeries. Treading the tightrope between art and lies, it explores the appeal of stories, objects, bodies or experiences that offer the false promise of authenticity. How do we discern whats real and whats not in a time of influencers and identity scams, counterfeits and cosmetic surgeries, disinformation and threats to democracy? From the imitation game and the uncanny valley to con artistry, trickery and scams, artifice makes the world go round but perhaps all is not as it seems. With a magicians flourish and a smooth sleight of hand, Counterfeit Culture unveils the agony and the ecstasy of the unreal. Can you spot the fake? And does it matter? Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The capacity to tell stories along with language and the ability to create art is seen as both intrinsic and unique to the human species. Over thousands of years, weve forged narratives of our origins, our journeys and our dreams as a means of accounting for who we are and to define our place in the world. In the twenty-first century, as our existential and environmental crises mount, humanitys place feels distinctly tenuous. What lessons from the past can inform, even shape, our increasingly uncertain future? And are the stories were telling ourselves about what comes next environmental downfall or technological salvation helping or hindering what we might do and where we might go? In celebration of Griffith Reviews eightieth edition and twentieth anniversary, Creation Stories looks to the stars above and the earth below to map our ever-evolving relationships with the world around us. From archaeology and astronomy to AI and transhumanism, the preservation of traditional knowledge to the intricacies of postmodern identity, this edition travels through time and space to explore the many tales of who we are and where we might be headed. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In 1930, John Maynard Keynes spelt out a vision of the impending utopia. Work, he said, will become a thing of the past. For the first time since creation, he predicted, man will be faced with his real, his permanent problem how to occupy the leisure which sciencewill have won for him.So where did this vision of future past go? Like baco-foil suits and meals of protein pills, it proved to be a concept that withered on the vine. Instead of an excess of free time to be enjoyed at leisure, a radically different regime now dominates the developed nations: the leisure principle. The leisure principle is one of work hard to play hard, a rigorous pursuit of monetarised hedonism: YOLO, live your best life, have a good time all the time. From the ecstasy of the digital to the monied spectacle that is sport, the gamification of everyday life to the flourishing hierarchy of influencers, Griffith Review 81: The Leisure Principle sets out to scrutinise the terms and conditions of this contemporary compact and consider how we came to cede so much just to amuse ourselves to death. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Whether its mans best friend or the king of the jungle, animals occupy a central place in our social, emotional and cultural lives. Were happy as clams or pigs in mud; we hold our horses or take a lions share of what we want; we avoid the elephant in the room or try not to open a can of worms. Animal Magic visits habitats near and far, wild and domestic the backyard and the dog park, the jungle and the desert, the field and the farm to examine our complex interactions with creatures furry or scaled, four-legged or eight-limbed, winged or feathered. How has the human-animal bond evolved over the centuries? Is it ethical to have a pet? Why are so many of us averse to insects when their extinction would spell the end of life on Earth? And what truly separates us from the creatures we share the planet with? Griffith Review 82: Animal Magic lets the cat out of the bag to explore all these questions and more. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The past, famously, is a foreign country but in the twenty-first century, its one in which we increasingly seek solace. No matter the relentless pace of technological innovation and the digitisation of everything from money to media our appetites for retro design and aesthetics, for cultural products that reimagine technicolour-dream versions of decades gone by, or for fantasies of a past golden political age are ever on the rise. But what fuels this love affair with recycling our history? What periods do we choose to romanticise, and how do our rose-tinted glasses occlude reality? Is all this nostalgia signifying as the late Mark Fisher opined the slow cancellation of the future? Past Perfect surveys our need to idealise, sensationalise and glamorise and asks what the circular nature of our obsessions says about our present cultural moment. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The attachments we form shape our experience of the world and our understanding of who we are. Hell is other people', wrote Jean-Paul Sartre, his point being less about misanthropy and more about how entwined our self-perception is with the ways in which others perceive us. And alongside our personal relationships from filial to friendship, from collegiate to romantic sit the complex emotional connections we form with places, ideas and objects. How do we navigate these varying attachments, and what can they offer us when our lives are so mediated by technology? Can we break free of the tropes and traps associated with our most primal relationships: the social expectations of motherhood, the burdens of filial duty, the complexities of infidelity? Paperback. 1502. 'Go west young man' has been a siren call in Australia, Canada and the US for centuries - a new frontier for them, yet already home to others for millennia. In Australia, the lure of bounty from mineral riches drew generations of fortune hunters to its western third. For some this was a stop on the road to a better place, for many a destination for new beginnings, while for those who had always lived there dislocation was inevitable. Since the 1980s Perth has become a byword for new wealth and in the first years of the 21st Century became a boom-town the likes of which Australia hasn't seen since the 1850s. There is evidence this is starting to slow, but what will be left when the boom deflates? WA is also Australia's (and perhaps the world's) largest state, most of which is a vast desert butting hard against a broiling ocean. The view, looking back east, is sceptical, looking west uncertain, with a lot of space between both. This edition will see submissions from Tim Winton to Carmen Lawrence reflecting on the unique place and perspective that is Western Australia. With the escalating pace of change in the west it is time to reappraise what makes Western Australia distinctive and how its future might unfold. Authors include: Tim Winton, Gail Jones, Brooke Davis, Carmen Lawrence, Shaun Tan, Helen Trinca, David Whish-Wilson, Ashley Hay, Kim Scott, David Carlin and many more. 2015. First edition. A very good, unmarked copy.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Griffith Review 77: Real Cool World explores Antarctica as both a place and a canvas for imagination. This vast, dry continent drives much of our global weather, a litmus test for change at the worlds extremities and a canary in the coalmine. Stories about this deep south illuminate much of the rest of the planets past and future, and they also create a space to play out human ideas of exploration, investigation, and fantasy; ideas of other places, differently managed, often unattainable particularly with the recent pause in global tourism. Is this an isolated arena for collaboration and cooperation or a landscape where harsher realities are always navigated and often realised? Overarching this space, the Antarctic Treaty has weathered sixty years since its first signing, transforming from a baseline of scientific freedoms and territorial co-existence to encompass broad swathes of environmental protection and ever-changing delineations in the worlds atlas of political relationships. What do these treaties mean now for Antarctica itself, and for global ideas of governance as geopolitical alliances and desires shift and change, as the race for new sources of resources heats up, and as the results of a changing climate and exceeded tipping points come into play? Featuring powerful and beautiful narratives from the worlds of glaciology and marine biology to geopolitics, fiction and more, this collection explores science and stories from the planets southernmost continent. Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. [New York: Exhibitor's Trade Review; distributed by D.W. Griffith Service, 1920]. Quarto-sized pamphlet measuring 30.8 x 23.6 cm (approx. 12 x 9 in.). 36 pages; illustrations printed with the text. Original printed wraps with a portrait of Griffith on the front cover. Good plus. Front wrap shows light foxing and toning and some faint offsetting (from contact with another publication previously stored with this item); uneven marginal browning to rear wrap. A few minuscule edge tears to wraps; tiny chip to the unprinted rear wrap. Central horizontal crease throughout. (One other trade copy we have encountered and the digital reproduction of the Univ. of Iowa copy both have such a crease and it was possibly the result of the distributor folding the pamphlet for mailing.) A few tiny fore-edge tears, most of which are associated with the crease. Small stain to the portrait of Richard Barthelmess; a few minor marginal smudges. Several instances of ghosting (printer's error), most evident on the margin of p. [10] and unobtrusive elsewhere. FIRST EDITION. An attractively illustrated review of D.W. Griffith's career and one of the earliest separately published biographies of the filmmaker. Hastings' account (beginning on p. [5] with the caption title, "David Wark Griffith") was reprinted from the Exhibitor's Trade Review. In his research for the piece, Hastings was assisted by Griffith's staff and was given access to the proof sheets of Robert Edgar Long's forthcoming book, "David Wark Griffith: a Brief Sketch of his Career," which was issued the same year. Lesley Mason provides a long sentiment about Griffith on p. [1] and an unsigned foreword on p. [3] discusses the historical significance of the invention of motion pictures. The numerous photographs include full-page portraits of actors, Lillian Gish, Robert Harron, Richard Barthelmess, Clarine Seymour, Carol Dempster, and Creighton Hale; cinematographer, "Billy" Bitzer; and Griffith himself. There is also a composite of Griffith's staff, production scenes, movie stills, etc. Rather scarce. OCLC locates only three copies (Univ. of Iowa, Margaret Herrick Library, and Danish Film Institute); not found in NUC.
