Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 418 Pages. Later printing of a 1967 Harvest copyright. Some cover edge and corner wear. Maps. The author, daughter of Moscow Jewish pharmacist who moved to his family to Kazan. In 1920 Eugenia entered Kazan State University studying social science and later pedagogy. She worked as teacher at the University and married Pavel Aksyonov, the mayor of Kazan and a member of Central Executive Committee of USSR. After becoming a Communist Party member, Ginzburg continued her successful career of educator, journalist and administrator. In February 1937, she was expelled from the party ranks and soon arrested for alleged connection with the Trotskyists. Her parents were also arrested but released in two months. Her husband was arrested in July and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor. In August 1937 Eugenia was sentenced to ten years. She was jailed in the infamous Moscow Lefortovo, Butyrka prisons and then dangerous journey in wagon across the country to Vladivostok, and finally to Kolyma in cargo hold of the steamer Jurma. She worked at a camp hospital and later to the Gulag. A doctor named Anton Walter saved her life by recommending her for a nurse position. Anton had been deported due to his German heritage and Eugenia due to her critical attitude to the Soviet system. They married later. In February 1949, Ginzburg was formally released. She found a position at a kindergarten and secretly started to work on her memoirs. In October 1950 she was arrested again and exiled to Krasnoyarsk region but before she left, her destination was changed to Kolyma. After Stalin's death in 1953, Ginzburg was able to visit Moscow and was fully rehabilitated in 1955, as were millions of others wrongly convicted. She returned to Moscow, worked as a reporter and continued her work on her memoir. She was unable to get her book published in the Soviet Uniion and the manuscript was smuggled abroad where it is widely published and read. Her book has been compaed to solzhenitsyn's Gulag Archipelago.

"The silver anniversary edition of the most enchanting of Joan Walsh Anglund's many books is a celebration of love. Since the publication of the original edition in 1960, this gentle classic has sold over one and a half million copies and has enjoyed readership throughout the world. That love is, indeed, "a special way of feeling" has never been more enchantingly revealed in words and pictures than in this timeless gift book. With winsome illustrations and succinct text, the author depicts the numerous places we find love: a child in its mother's arms, a frightened colt calmed by a young friend, a lovely flower that one suddenly notices - all bring about a warm, secure feeling that we identify with love. We are delighted to present a special edition of this appealing popular book in honor of its more than a quarter-century in print." - from the inner front jacket flap.
