"This book was assembled from the unpublished papers of Lyman Copeland Draper (1815-1891) former secretary of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, and editor of the first ten volumes of the Wisconsin Historical Collections. Lyman Draper was a collector of narratives dealing with the history of the early western frontier. This particular collection deals with the first engagement between the Indians and whites in the Valley of Virginia on 'the South Branch of the North Branch of the James River' (Galudoghson) This book combines Draper's even-handed account of this important first engagement with transcripts of the original sources from which he drew upon to create his account.".

Book
Trade Paperback. Condition: New. 182 pages. The census taker came every ten years and often missed people. The tax collector came every year and seldom missed anyone. The Genealogist's Guide to Researching Tax Records will give you the techniques to locate, read, and understand the valuable information in these annual records. Researching tax records, which date from the 1620s to the present day, can help you establish the location, real estate, personal possessions, economic status and perhaps even the occupations and family relationships of your ancestors. Learn how to find tax records, how to read these records and understand the information they provide. Chapters one and two explain techniques that will help you successfully research tax records. Subsequent chapters explain how to apply those techniques in researching head or poll taxes, real estate taxes, personal property taxes, federal taxes, inheritance taxes, and a variety of miscellaneous taxes. Tax records are especially helpful for the period before the first U.S. census in 1790 and for the period between 1880 and 1900. This is the most complete guide to researching tax records in print and includes examples from New England, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas, Arizona, and more. Appendices, bibliographies, and a subject index add to the value of this work.

The authors first transcribed data from microfilm available from the Library of Virginia for marriages reported beginning in 1853, then compared this information to the actual license and return (whenever possible) and to the marriage books available in the Clerk's Office, Loudoun County Court House, Leesburg, Virginia. The authors found much information which was not included on the microfilm and have added it to the transcription. A typical entry includes groom's name, bride's name, date of marriage, place of marriage, race, previous marital status, place of birth, residence, occupation, date of license, consent, marriage official and date of return. Black and white pictorial wrapper with black lettering. 255 very clean unmarked and uncreased informative and historical pages nicely enhanced by black and white photographs and illustrations! In this thoroughly researched and well-documented book, Dr. Rice brings to light the long neglected Cherokee heritage of the people living in the Buffalo Ridge area of Stapleton, Virginia. Although the people themselves, as well as their neighbors in Amherst County, are aware of their Native American heritage, such things as their early assimilation of modern dress, the prejudice of outsiders, and what Dr. Rice calls a Paper Genocide of shoddy and deceptive census and civil record keeping in the state, have kept this remnant of the divided Cherokee nation rather an obscure and forgotten part of Native American culture.".

In the mid-1800s, Blount County officials found the deed books of the county in a state of deterioration and they voted to have the books copied into new ledgers. After being copied, the original books were destroyed. Each deed contains the date the deed was written; the consideration for which the property was conveyed; a description of the property including location and adjoining property owners, when known; names of witnesses; and date of registration by county clerk. The deeds of this period reflect the hard circumstances in the early 1820s following the Panic of 1819. A surname index adds to the value of this work.
