Trade Paperback. Condition: New. First Edition. 72 pages. Volume I contains an abstract of the actual sexton records of Westfall Cemetery which is located in Knox County, Illinois, near the town of Galesburg. These records show all of the burials from 1845 to the present, along with notations by the caretakers showing dates for birth and death, interrelationships between individual family members, and other special notes. The records show the Westfall family and all 145 related lines including many of the well known families of Knox county such as: Anderson, Arie, Baughman, Blackledge, Cherrington, Cockran, Crouch, Davis, Dawson, Eiker, Eldridge, England, Fields, Flynn, Gibbs, Godsil, Gothard, Haptonstall, Horkstrom, Johnson, King, Larson, Mitchell, Myrick, Newberg, Norburg, Patton, Rice, Sunberg, Swanson, Wagher, Warrensford, Westergreen and Wyman to name a few. The current cemetery lists show only 471 interments; however the author shows that there are actually 660 individuals buried there along with thirty-three reserved plots. This is the only true source for all burials in this cemetery. In addition to the cemetery list, Volume I contains maps and plot-by-plot layouts for all burials within the cemetery. This feature allows researchers to tie family groups together by their actual placement to next of kin. Also included are notes about the head stone condition and where husband and wife, or a family, share a head stone.

"This book was assembled from the unpublished papers of Lyman Copeland Draper (1815-1891) former secretary of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, and editor of the first ten volumes of the Wisconsin Historical Collections. Lyman Draper was a collector of narratives dealing with the history of the early western frontier. This particular collection deals with the first engagement between the Indians and whites in the Valley of Virginia on 'the South Branch of the North Branch of the James River' (Galudoghson) This book combines Draper's even-handed account of this important first engagement with transcripts of the original sources from which he drew upon to create his account.".

Book First Edition Signed
Paperback. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. First Edition. This is a brand new signed first edition. Based on extensive research, Blacksnake's Path combines a compelling narrative with authentic history. This splendid novel about an unsung hero of American history is the product of twelve years of research and writing, yet it carries its prodigious learning lightly in order to tell vividly the story of William Wells's remarkable life and recreate an entire period (1779-1812). "William Heath's story of the life of William Wells rescues from obscurity one of the most dramatic episodes in the long struggle for control of the North American continent. Heath ably combines the craft of the novelist with the deep research of the historian to make Blacksnake's Path as informative as it is enjoyable," Andrew Cayton. "Blacksnake's Path is one of the best books, perhaps the best book that describes the earliest, wild and bloody days of the American Midwest," Jerry Crimmins. "With his encyclopedic grasp of the era and the territory, William Heath takes the reader back to the frontier Ohio Valley in the midst of its bloodiest war. As scenic and action-packed as the best adventure novel, Blacksnake's Path is a rousing, brutal use of American history," Stewart O'Nan. F/paperback, first edtion, first printing. Book
Paperback. Condition: New. 72 pages. In Ohio, the legal procedure of adopting children was authorized on 29 March 1859 by an act of the General Assembly. The first adoption in Franklin County occurred on 27 July 1859 when James Rice, aged three years, son of Jeremiah and Mary Ann Rice, was adopted by John J. and Lydia Wilson. For the period of 1859 through 1901, there were approximately three hundred and forty adoptions in Franklin County, Ohio. All of these appear in the Probate Court Journals and most of them appear in the Probate Court Complete Record as well. All of these records are available on microfilm or as originals at the Ohio Historical Society in Columbus. The abstracts included in this compilation identify the adoptees, the natural and adoptive parents, the adoptee's new name if the name was changed, and the date of the adoption. A reference code identifies the source where the complete record can be found if desired. *** On 26 January 1987, Judge Richard B. Metcalf of the Franklin County Probate Court sent a letter to Dennis East, State Archivist, in which instructions were contained regarding the opening of all Franklin County adoption records prior to 1 January 1926. Also, all adoption records between 1 January 1926 and 1 January 1964, if intermingled with other Probate Court records, were to be opened; if they were not intermingled, such records were to be closed.

The history of Caldwell, Kansas, between 1870 and 1885, reflects a piece of American history that has developed into legend. During this period, Caldwell went from one crisis to another, from killings to lynchings, shootouts to search parties, bank openings to bank busts. Seldom was it boring. Caldwell saw more lawmen killed in its short history than any other cow town. Gunfighters and gunfights were common. Charlie Stone made a name for himself in the cattle business before heading west. In 1871, he traveled to the southern border of Kansas. There, Stone and his friends staked out a plot of land overlooking Fall and Bluff Creeks, next to Indian Territory. It stood on the Chisholm Trail. They named the place after a railroad magnate and Kansas politician they admired-Alexander Caldwell. Within a decade Caldwell became a thriving cattle town, fulfilling Stone's dream for it. For one season it shipped more cattle east than Dodge City. Caldwell was within shouting distance of Indian Territory and all its dangers. The town's history is filled with Indian scares and fights; cattle thieves and killers; lawmen chasing outlaws; lynchings; financial schemes; and conflict among cattlemen, trail herders, merchants, farmers, and homesteaders. The railroad played a key role in the town's development and success. Caldwell attracted cowboys over a longer period than any other cow town. Between 1870 and 1885, its reputation as a rip snorting pleasure spot for boisterous trail drivers at the end of the trail beat all the competition. A clean very presentable copy.

Paperback. Condition: Fine. 190 pages. With over 1,500 Kentuckian surnames referenced in this major new work. Mr. Hehir provides in one source a comprehensive listing of all printed Kentuckian genealogies and family histories that have made their way into major library collections across the United States. The author researched library listings and catalogs covering many genealogical libraries including the Library of Congress, the National Genealogical Society Library and the Library of the Daughters of the American Revolution along with historical association libraries from Massachusetts to California. Many of the books deal with multiple families some with non-Kentucky roots. Arranged for ease of use the entries are presented alphabetically according to surname with a cross index to family and secondary names to help researchers find surnames that would otherwise remain buried with the text. No genealogist working with Kentuckian families should be without this time-saving volume on his or her bookshelf.
