Nelle ore che precedono l'inizio, ignoti gli uni agli altri, diversi personaggi si accingono a partecipare alla serata. Vediamo il pianista e la sua assistente, accanto da oltre dieci anni. Lui non ama il contatto con il pubblico e la stampa, lei si occupa di ogni aspetto pratico della sua vita. Man mano arrivano gli spettatori, e si riuniscono nel foyer: qui si incontrano due amiche, chiacchierano e si confidano le proprie esistenze, i rapporti con gli uomini, l'insicurezza dei desideri. Un agente pubblicitario di ritorno da New York si ricorda di avere due biglietti riservati e cerca compagnia. Giungono Sophie e Klara, zia nubile e nipote scontrosa; Lorenz, trentotto anni, ex studente di matematica, ex giocatore di scacchi, temperamento labile e velleitario, che si appresta a lavorare come cameriere per il ricevimento in onore del pianista. Si notano l'agente teatrale che segue l'artista in Europa, e la signora la cui filantropia ha permesso l'organizzazione del concerto. Inizialmente distanti e disgiunti, i personaggi si raccolgono nella folla ed entrano nella grande sala pentagonale. Prendono posto, il podio è al centro. Scende il silenzio. L'evento, assolutamente inatteso, accade nel mezzo dell'esecuzione, durante l'ultimo tempo della Sonata opera 106 di Beethoven.

Nella primavera del 1960 Schmil viene arrestato all'aeroporto di Mosca per contrabbando di valuta e giustiziato di lì a poco. Qualcuno deve averlo denunciato al KGB, Schmil non è nuovo a tali commerci, e nella cerchia familiare cominciano a circolare sospetti su chi di loro possa essere stato l'autore, volontario o involontario, della delazione. Maxim Biller sublima in tensione narrativa l'atmosfera di totale insicurezza e di reciproca diffidenza che si genera in ogni regime totalitario, dove l'individuo è alla mercé di qualunque voce o supposizione. Attorno all'evento cruciale si confrontano sei punti di vista differenti e divergenti, alternati e mescolati alle esperienze personali dell'autore, che è nipote di Schmil. Sullo sfondo il confronto Est-Ovest durante la Guerra Fredda, l'antisemitismo dilagante, la disperata disgregazione dei rapporti umani alla prova di uno stato di polizia. I personaggi, smarriti tra i grandi avvenimenti della storia e le piccole miserie della quotidianità, sono esposti alla devastante violenza degli eventi, i dubbi si acuiscono puntandosi sull'uno o sull'altro componente della famiglia, le rivelazioni alimentano l'ambiguità, sembrano suggerire l'intercambiabilità delle possibili motivazioni, rafforzando ogni incertezza e scarto di prospettiva, disfacendo il tessuto degli affetti e della fiducia reciproca. Per salvare la propria vita si può essere costretti a scelte drammatiche e crudeli, si può tradire o diventare eroi. Ma i personaggi di Biller sono solo uomini e donne impegnati a vivere e sopravvivere, mentre attorno a loro scorre la storia d'Europa del secondo dopoguerra con le sue contraddizioni e le sue speranze, che proiettano in controcampo un racconto delle lacerazioni che ancora dilaniano il nostro mondo.
