Freddie Clark has adopted an unusual formula for telling of his experiences in the RAF during WWII, by incorporating the earlier exploits of an relative, Bert Stanley, who served with the RFC/RAF in WWI, first as a mechanic/gunner and later a pilot. Clark's own RAF story…begins with his account of training in South Africa and Britain, his early operations and then as a pilot flying Halifax aircraft on top secret operations with 138 Squadron. In mid-1944 his plane was shot down over France on a supply dropping mission. Evasion, capture, a POW camp and eventual return to England followed. The author has insterspersed his narrative with brief accounts of old war-time locations revisited and reunions with the French people who assisted him after the crash and before his POW term.
