They had no experience of others to guide them, and no maps. They experienced hardships and dangers that test modern mountaineers with all their sophisticated equipment. The precursor of these expeditions was the Portuguese Jesuit, Bento de Goes, who from 1602 to 1607 skirted the cauntry on an incredible journey from Agra in India across the Hindu Kush, and the Gobi Desert to Su~chen in western China. In 1624 Antonio de Andrade set out from Agta and thna from northern India and Srinagar attained the Mana Pass, where he became the first European to look down upon the plains of Tibet. From there he went on to Tsaparang, where other Jesuits followed and set up a residence. In 1661 the Austrian Jesuit Johannes Grueber and the Belgian Albert d'Orville, in search of an overland route from China to India were first Europeans to reach Lhasa. In 1626 two other Portuguese Jesuits, Estevao Cacella and Joao Cabral, started from Cochin in south India and reached Shigatse, the seat of the Panchen Lama and of the great Tibetan monastery of Tashi~Lunpo. Finally, and most importantly, in 1716 the Italian Jesuit, Ippolito Desideri, made his way to Lhasa and the Potala, the seat of the Dalai Lama. For five years he lived with the Tibetans and studied their religion, language, and customs. this is the fascinating story of adventurous European Jesuit travels across the roof of world to meet in peace and friendship a people yet unknown to much of that world.
