Development empowerment and disempowerment a conceptual framework. 2. Empowerment structural constraints and impediments. 3. Indian Muslims facing the reality of disempowerment. 4. Exogenous sources of disempowerment. 5. Endogenous sources of disempowerment. 6. Creating an enabling environment for empowerment. 7. Empowerment through community restructuring. References. Bibliography. Index. The term empowerment has acquired a good deal of prominence and salience in the contemporary academic and political discourse in India. Empowerment generally refers to a process as well as a programme of action or intervention whereby a qualitative and sustained improvement in the lives of people is brought about. This short book focuses on the issue of the empowerment of Muslims in India in an integral holistic perspective. Proceeding from the premise that the issue of empowerment of any group or community in a given society should be addressed in the context of both the larger society and the community in question. The book brings out the bearing of the larger political social economic and cultural processes in contemporary Indian society on the marginalization and disempowerment of Muslims and other minority groups. The book argues that the ideal of empowerment needs to be juxtaposed with the reality of disempowerment in the context of specific groups and communities. It presents an extended discussion on the nature and extent of the disempowerment and marginalization of Indian Muslims as perceived and experienced by the community and as corroborated by researchers as well as official sources. This is followed by an analysis of the dynamics of disempowerment in terms of exogenous and endogenous sources. The book emphasizes the need for creating and sustaining an enabling environment for the empowerment of marginalized groups and communities. It also addresses the key question of the prerequisites of empowerment in the context of Indian Muslims. The concluding part of the book underscores the role of community mobilization as a potent instrument of empowerment. The book will be of interest to social scientists researchers policy makers NGOs and the educated public. 156 pp.

Hardbound. Condition: As New. New. Contents Introduction to the series. Foreword. Publisher's note. Preface. 1. Disempowerment. 2. Information and communication. 3. A case study 50 media persons views. 4. Empowerment through information and communication. 5. Recommendations. Index. The History of Indian Media starts in 1810 with the launching of Urdu Akhbar from Kolkata by Molvi Akram Ali not in 1816 with Gangadhar Bhattacharjea's Vengal Gazette as stated by Chanchal Sarkar in his The Story of Our Newspapers. The contribution of the second largest community to the media in the pre and post independence India can't be denied. Whether it is the mainstream regional or Muslim Media Muslims have played a pivotal role in founding and consolidating it. Today there would hardly be found a newspaper in any language wherein there is no Muslim. But in spite of this fact this community is not empowered. The reason is simple there is a communication gap between media and Muslim community. Besides media doesn't represent all segments of the Indian Society. Keeping these facts in view the empowerment of Muslims in India through information and communication has been discussed in detail in this book while throwing a light on the disempowerment of the community as well as various sources of information and communication. The book includes an exclusive section based on the views of 50 senior journalists and Muslims in different newspapers news agencies and channels in Delhi. As a whole the book which is first of its kind is very explorative informative and interesting. 152 pp.
