Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The model industrial village of Port Sunlight was founded by the soap manufacturer W. H. Lever (later Lord Leverhulme) in 1888 for the factory workers of his firm of Lever Brothers. The village was acclaimed from the first as exemplifying the best in English town planning and house design, and greatly influenced subsequent industrial villages such as Bournville, and the garden city movement more generally. This guide considers the village in its historical context, with particular emphasis on the planning and architectural aspects. It explains the social and visual significance of Port Sunlight and the reasons for its being unique in the history of town planning, as well as looking at the way its development was influenced by changing fashions in civic design. The relevance of Levers own character and interests his social conscience, his love of art and beauty and his architectural enthusiasms is also examined. Two tours, one for pedestrians and one for car drivers, which include and describe the most significant buildings of the village, are an additional feature of the guide. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Hyperides was ranked in antiquity as second in greatness only to Demosthenes amongst the Ten Attic Orators. His execution in 322 BC for opposition to Macedonian rule left Dinarchus as the last of the Ten to survive. This book critically evaluates the speeches of both orators against Demosthenes and discusses Hyperides' funeral oration as an important historical source for understanding Athens in the last years of the reign of Alexander the Great. The history of the period of discussed in detail, as is the rhetorical style of the two orators. Amongst other distinctions this text provides the first commentary in English on Hyperides' two speeches. A Greek text of Dinarchus' and Hyperides' fragmented speeches is provided along with an English translation. The commentary is essentially historical, but some literary and philological points are also discussed. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The Bible and the sacraments go together as the cornerstone of Christian identity. Wherever Christianity is practised in traditional ways, converts are baptised and bread is broken together. Countless books have been written about the theological significance these events, but their strictly human meaning and value as ways of helping people to make sense of themselves and enjoy their lives together has sometimes been overlooked. The sacraments are first and foremost signs of belonging, to God and with one another. They are sacramental not only because of the circumstances surrounding their origin, but also because of their function in incorporating the personal belonging to which they point. Roger Grainger explores the human side of sacrament -- the emotional hunger which it addresses, and what this means from a theological point of view; and what it still means for us today, despite all the changes which have taken place over the ages in the world in which we live. By looking at the way human beings relate to one another we can begin to see the amazing relevance of these traditional ceremonies -- their God given ability to heal our personal woundedness and bring to the forefront the reality of belonging together in community. The significance of sacramental worship for human growth and development is examined in some depth, using the insights to be gained from the anthropological study of religion, while its contribution to psychological health and the establishment of individual identity through personal relationship is identified as the basis of our sense of belonging. This book proceeds from its author's conviction that a better understanding of the dynamics of our belonging would contribute to the Church's mission within a fragmented society. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The release of previously unavailable Soviet archives has allowed a re-examination of Anglo-Soviet relations during Churchill's peacetime administration, with special emphasis on the Kremlin's motivation for resisting the Prime Minister's attempts to end the Cold War. Throughout 1951-55, the time was not yet ripe for detente: the USSR and Western powers were less than willing to accommodate each other. Instead they engaged in the consolidation of their own blocs and the build-up of their defensive potential. With Winston Churchill becoming the most outspoken advocate of detente, the Kremlin greeted the return to power of the Conservative Party under his leadership with a general mistrust. After Josef Stalin's death in March 1953, detente remained a distant reality. The collective leadership was keen to reduce international tensions without modifying its predecessor's foreign policy, or abandoning Soviet strongholds of central and eastern Europe. As part of its peace offensive, the Kremlin was prepared to improve the atmosphere in relations with Britain and increase the volume of Anglo-Soviet trade. However, the British remained mistrustful of the intentions of Stalin's successors, and refrained from initiatives leading to a relaxation of export controls independent from American embargo policy. The author demonstrates that Stalin's heirs suspected that Churchill's pursuit of detente was designed to secure far-reaching concessions. Moscow also felt that as a junior partner acting in full dependence on and in co-operation with US policy, Churchill was in no position to conciliate between the USSR and the USA. Engaged in a domestic struggle for power, members of the collective leadership were reluctant to allow their opponent, Georgi Malenkov, to negotiate single-handedly with western statesmen. It was only after Nikita Khrushchev's ascendance to power and Churchill's resignation from office that the Kremlin was prepared to participate in summit talks with the western heads of government. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The steady increase in joint programmes and qualifications offered by UK and French universities is a cause for celebration. But language constraints, financial pressures and political uncertainty present real obstacles to continued expansion. How are these to be overcome? And how can higher education institutions on either side of the Channel help each other to realise the enormous potential of Franco-British partnerships? Franco-British Academic Partnerships: The Next Chapter is a valuable opportunity not only to take stock of intensifying bilateral cooperation in the higher education sector, but also to share experience and best practice, and, hopefully, to identify some new initiatives and areas for collaboration. Boasting contributions from leading politicians and higher education managers, alongside essays from distinguished international scholars, the book will be required reading for academics and university leaders. Paperback. Condition: Good. In this memoir of his childhood, ODriscoll eloquently examines his troubled relationship with his father, whose bullying and mental abuse have affected him profoundly throughout his life. The task the author has undertaken is to give voice to the voiceless: to express the unnerving pent-up emotions he was unable to express as a child. In A Runner among Falling Leaves, ODriscoll has written a book that is lyrical, affecting, and at times darkly comical. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Graham Greene is among the major creative talents of our time. This study concentrates on his achievements as a novelist whose work spanned more than sixty years, and was translated into forty languages. As skilful in writing with humour as with seriousness, he combined the gifts of a superb story-teller with the power to analyse the political ills and human dilemmas of an age of anxiety. As a writer who 'happened to be a Catholic', he also reflected the problem of faith and belief in a time of persistent violence. This study describes his vision of the twentieth century, and his evolving dedication to his craft as a writer of fiction. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Volcanoes have an endless fascination. Their eruptions are a regular reminder of the power of nature and our vulnerability to this raw geological phenomenon, however volcanic activity, and its plumbing from beneath, is an essential element of the forces that shaped and constantly reshape our planet. Dougal Jerram answers the questions: What are volcanoes? What other volcanic activity is there? How do volcanoes relate to plate tectonics and the movement of continents? What are eruptions and why do they occur? How have volcanoes affected the earth's climate? Can we predict eruptions? He also describes the most notable eruptions in history and their effect. Copiously illustrated throughout Introducing Volcanology is a concise and accessible introduction to the science of hot rocks for those with an adult curiosity and for those contemplating a course of formal study. As with sister volumes, technical terms are kept to a minimum and a glossary is provided covering the whole subject from ash to zeolites. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This stunning photography book captures the spirit of the now almost lost tradition of the English seaside holiday. The photographs taken from English Heritages unique collection held in the National Monuments Record illustrate how we used to take our summer holidays before cheap flights and package deals made foreign holidays affordable to all, leading to the decline of the English seaside resort. From Victorian bathers to 1950s beach huts, from the 19th-century fishermen to long destroyed landmarks such as New Brightons Tower (higher than its more famous rival at Blackpool) and from Punch & Judy shows to donkey rides along the beach, this book reminds us how we have changed as a nation and, in some cases, what we have lost forever. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. More than any other Tudor castle, Upnor has close ties with the navy. It was built for the protection of Elizabethan warships anchored in the Medway, and its importance matched the growth of the dockyards at Chatham. The highlight of Upnor's history came in 1667 during the Second Dutch War when it played an important part in preventing a squadron of the Dutch fleet, which had already done considerable damage, from sailing further up the Medway. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Scotland's mountains and glens retain the secrets of the long and frequently violent geological history that has gone into their making. Volcanoes have played a major role in the creation of Scotland and while the youngest, a mere sixty million years old, were responsible for much of the scenic splendour of the Inner Hebrides, the rocks composing many of the famous Scottish landforms as, for example, those of Glencoe and the Edinburgh district are also the direct result of volcanism. Volcanoes and the Making of Scotland explores back in time from the most recent examples to volcanoes of the obscure Precambrian times which left their signature in the ancient rocks of the far north-west. Geographically the book ranges across all of Scotland from Shetland to the Borders. Reflecting current research into Scotland's geology, the author also speculates as to the climate, geography and ecology of the long-gone landscapes in which the volcanoes of differing ages were created and destroyed. The book is extensively illustrated with maps, sketches, cross-sections and photographs and relates what can currently be seen in the worn-down remains of Scotland's old volcanoes to active analogues around the world. This book vividly brings life and meaning to what the layman would otherwise regard as cold and incomprehensible rocks. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Vesuvius is one of the most dangerous volcanoes on Earth. Its story is fascinating - not only its rich geological and geographical history, but also the changing social, religious and intellectual impact that the volcano has always had upon the people living around it. Hence, this book is truly a biography of a formidable and richly colourful living entity.Volcanoes are not passive like other mountains, and Vesuvius has been less passive than most volcanoes. It is the paramount natural feature in the whole region of Campania in southern Italy, and the constant rival of the turbulent city of Naples that lies at its heart. Volcano and city have played a dominant role on the stage of Campania since the first literate Greek colonists settled there some 3000 years ago. The Campanians have never been able to remember with serenity, nor to orget with impunity, that theirs is a volcanic land. Vesuvius threatens in the east; a rash of smaller volcanoes riddle the landscape of the Campi Flegrei to the west; and between them lie Naples and a host of busy towns. For many centuries, the people believed that the Underworld lurked beneath the ground itself. The ways in which the people have interpreted the habits and behaviour of the volcano have given it a distinct personality, and an almost anthropomorphic quality. Vesuvius has been as capricious as a spoilt courtesan. During its more tempestuous outbursts, it has destroyed homes and whole villages, and sent thousands of people to the Underworld. In calmer times, the destructive lava and ash then weathered into soils of such exquisite fertility that they recalled legends of a Golden Age.Some of that character has been manifested in the behaviour of the Campanians. They have watched their volcano, and they have watched over it; they have suffered from its fits of temper; they have feared and revered it; they have taken out images of their patron saints to propitiate it; and they have taken it to their hearts. Vesuvius has played a part in Campanian society that has been perhaps surpassed only by the strongest of rulers - or, more recently, by the bosses of the notorious parallel government that holds sway in the region. And, of course, Vesuvius buried Pompeii. Vesuvius threatens its surroundings today. The development of contingency plans for its next great eruption shows that scientists can apply the latest techniques to discover when the next eruption is about to occur, but also how such plans meet with a range of opposition from the people under threat. 'Vesuvius: A Biography' is based on the latest research and also on a prudent appraisal of contemporary historical accounts. Wherever possible, the story is based on eye-witness accounts; many are graphic word portraits the equal of photography and television coverage. Fresh translation of classical source material features extensively. Written with the non-specialist reader in mind, the book will be compelling reading for not only geologists and geographers but also emergency planners and all those fascinated by the dramatic face of the Earth and eager to explore its rich human dimensions as much as its spectacular physical processes. This is a complete history of the relationship between one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world and the many people who live perilously close to it. With new translations of classical sources, the story comes up to today and the ominous future. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This significant study of ecology and landscape development is probably the first of its kind to focus on an urban and industrial region. The book brings together the work of more than fifty experts, many of them world authorities, in studying the interactions between humans and other living organisms since the last ice age in a region where human intervention has a long history. Heightened interest in the past decade in the wildlife of the urban environment and the ecological processes involved has developed world-wide. Within the Mersey Basin, research has produced a profound difference in understanding, making this book unique as an ecological history and as a treatment of the industrial aspects of conservation. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Although much of Carters work is considered part of the contemporary canon, its true strangeness is still only partially understood. Lorna Sage argues that one key to a better understanding of Carters writings is the extraordinary intelligence with which she read the cultural signs of our times. From structuralism and the study of folk tales in the 1960s to fairy stories, gender politics and the theoretical pleasure of the text, which she makes so real in her writing. Carter legitimised the life of fantasy and celebrated the fertility of the female imagination more than any other writer. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The introduction of Chartered Teacher status in Scotland has created the need for a text that helps teachers to undertake the practice-based elements of that Standard. Aspiring Chartered Teachers also need materials that support them in making sense of the requirement to display professional influence and contribute to their profession. The editors and contributors to this volume provide theoretical and practical tools to enable teachers to develop their classroom practice within the current context of Scottish education - where improving teaching and learning is no longer simply construed as an individual endeavour. The focus is on the development of evidence-informed practice through the use of reflexive and enquiry based approaches to improving the learning of pupils in schools. The book draws on the work of teachers both in their own classrooms and also as members of collaborative professional enquiry groups. The book is intended for teachers, Continuing Professional Development providers, including school leaders and managers, and those academics interested in the professional development of experienced practitioners. Its purpose is to provide teachers with an overview of both the processes and the experience of developing the practice of teaching which is both theoretically sound and practicable. Since it is focused on transforming the classroom practice of teachers as a basis for improving school performance this book will have an international appeal in all countries where the development and recognition of 'expert teachers' is a priority. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Late Victorian quest romance has recently attracted renewed attention from critics. Much of this interest has centred on its politics of gender, and its vision of Empire. This book prefers to view the genre in the light of debates within the then nascent sciences of Anthropology and Archaeology. Starting with a discussion of the nature of romance, it goes on to interpret the encounters with lost or buried pasts. By describing encounters with remote places and times, so it argues, these authors were asking their readers disconcerting questions about humankind, and about their own culture's institutions and beliefs. The book ends by considering the implications of such a view for the whole colonial enterprise. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. While scholars and critics generally agree that the 1960s signaled the end of high modernism, what is less clear is how to characterize contemporary art since the 1960s. Acclaimed art scholar Jonathan Harris here tackles this question by assembling a rich body of essays, along with an extended interview with renowned feminist art scholar Amelia Jones, that tracks the movements in and issues central to contemporary art practice since this pivotal decade. The contributors to Dead History, Live Art? argue that visual art since the 1960s can no longer claim a separate and exalted status; rather, it should be interpreted as an integral part of a larger culture of display, consumption, and power that continues to evolve within a global capitalist system. Distinguished writers and artists such as Frazer Ward, Anna Dezeuze, Richard Layzell, and Jane Chin Davidson launch a new discussion on art and mass culture in their essays, with uncompromising examinations of how, in the context of modern capitalism, visual culture has radically redefined the relationships between the production and use of images, texts, and interpretive analysis. Issues explored in their essays include the rise of performance art in the 1960s and 1970s, the focus on diverse installation and mixed-media practices during the 1980s and 1990s, and, in an investigation reaching into the political sphere, the theater of visuality and spectacle created to support the invasion of and war in Iraq in 2003. Dead History, Live Art? proposes an intriguing new perspective on art history and art practice with its critical and uncompromising examination of their conventions, values, and institutions. As such, the volume reconfigures not only our understanding of contemporary art, but also the entire concept of the avant-garde. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition.
