VG orig. maroon cloth in good blue dj. 187 p.; 22 cm. (Gifford lectures, Aberdeen ; 1967-68) (Muirhead library of philosophy) Contents -- 1. Faith --2. Reimarus -- 3. Lessing -- 4. Kant -- 5. Hegel's early theological writings -- 6. Hegel's later theological writings -- 7. Strauss and modernism --8. From Schweitzer to form-criticism -- 9. What is it reasonable to believe? -- 10. Transcendence and immanence -- Index. -- `In art, in religion, inthoughtful investigation, it is when we are, as we say, `taken out of ourselves' that our experience is most real and most valued. This is the advancebeyond individuality to that in which individuality is grounded.`Our hearts are restless until they find rest in Thee.' The one relation out of whichno thought or category can be forced is its relation to its opposite, i.e.its own appropriate opposite. Love is not opposed to the many, nor hatredto the one. In trying to elucidate the mysterious unity of transcendence and immanence, of infinite and finite, I have been drawing, not only on Hegel, but also on Greek philosophy, especially on Book x of Plato's Laws and book [lamda] of Aristotle's Metaphysics. But I have been thinking too of thelanguage which St Paul used to the Athenians, when he spoke of God as he in whom we live and move and have our being (Acts xvii.28). It also seems tome that this attempt to combine the transcendent and the immanent, God theFather and God the indwelling Spirit, is also an attempt to follow the religion of Jesus, or at least that part of it in which he transcends Judaism, that part of it which speaks more directly to the hearts of some of us than the religion which St Paul and others made out of him.' (p. 179 f.). Binding is Hardcover.
