Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In this guide Jamaica is revealed as a nation beyond the rum punches, the beaches and the must-see tourist attractions. The author offers a sensitive observation of the land, not just as it is seen but also as it is heard through the lilt of reggae in a small village bar, through the smells of a blend of fragrances in a rain forest and through his taste buds which are aroused by the fire of jerk pork and soothed with a swig of Red Strips beer. Sir Philip Sherlock is an eminent Jamaican scholar, historian and writer. He is currently a Vice President of the Carribean Resources Development Foundation. Barbara Preston held a senior position with the Jamaican Tourist Board from 1975 until her retirement in 1990. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The nature of the marine shell fauna of the Caribbean is extremely diverse, seeking shelter beneath the sand of beaches, under the rocks of coastal areas, in the soft deep mud of estuaries, in dark submarine caves, in the thick growths of marine prairies, and under branches of vast coral outcrops. It remains unobtrusive and often difficult to discover. Each species has its geographical distribution and populations vary in size, shape and colour according to environment; some animals migrate seasonally far afield. Tidal movement in the Caribbean is unspectacular other than during the spring and autumn equinoxes when shallow reefs and sand flats emerge briefly. The intertidal zone remains stable and undisturbed, with the exception of the passage of tropical storms and hurricanes, governing the lives of many gastropods and bi-valves. Some of the world's rarest shells live in West Indian waters: the Golden Cowrie, the Leaf Winged Murex and the Glory of the Atlantic Cone. The Pink Queen Conch and King Helmet shells are still abundant in shallow waters. Numerous miniature, finely sculptured shells are mixed with the fine sands of tidelines which act as a boundary sea and shore. This guide introduces amateurs and collectors to an intertidal and shallow water fauna from the West Indies. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Originally published in 1954 and acclaimed around the world as one of the classics of Caribbean fiction, Brother Man is the tragic story of an honest Rastafarian healer caught up in a web of intrigue and betrayal in Jamaica's tough West Kingston slums. The healer's name is John Power, but everybody calls him Brother Man - a cobbler whose ability to cure the sick and injured through a mystic force uplifts him to the status of a prophet. Throngs begin to trail him when he passes in the street. With each miracle performed his reputation spreads. Looking on with envy is the evil Papacita, a violent enforcer whose authority is threatened by Brother Man's message of peace and love. Papacita's jealousy is stirred in more ways than one. The brutal schemer also covets the attention of Minette, a young attractive girl that Brother Man has rescued from the streets. Set in the same rambunctious lanes that reggae icons like Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff would later stroll and sing about, Brother Man, is the unforgettable portrait of a ghetto saint - an ordinary man selected by the universe to bring enlightenment to poor belittled people. It's a story of compelling mythic power that has stood the test of time. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
