Paperback. Condition: Fine. 1st. 112 pages, illustration (some colour); 20 cm. Tight, clean copy. "As the saying goes, dogs are man's best friend. Since the Stone Age, our canine companions have been illustrated, described, dramatized, and eulogized in one form or another. Dogs in Books celebrates the role of dogs in literature, featuring more than thirty famous dogs, from Tintin's white Wire Fox Terrier Snowy, to Lassie, Toto, and Snoopy, as well as dogs from Shakespeare, Jack London, Rudyard Kipling, Charles Dickens, and many more well-known authors. Culled from the British Library's incomparable archives, Dogs in Books features illustrations from rare editions of classic literature and contemporary renderings from popular books. Odysseus had his faithful dog Argos and King Lear's pack of dogs barked away at him as if warning him. From narrating an entire story to rescuing our hero, these dogs are critical characters in these books, demonstrating the timelessness of our undying love and respect for dogs and proving that they have always been more than just a pet. / Catherine Britton is Senior Editor at the British Library." - Publisher. quarto, printed boards. First Edition. First Edition. quarto, printed boards. 351 pp. Mark Batty Publisher, Founded in 1990 by Erik Spiekermann and Neville Brody, FontFont produces innovative and influential fonts by designers, for designers. Made with FontFont is an anthology of type specimens and essays closely and creatively examining how FontFont operates, to elucidate how this relative newcomer on the type design scene has made such an impression on the trends of type and typography. The 368 pages are divided into five chapters revealing the essence of FontFont and its legacy: Thinking FontFont, Talking FontFont, Making FontFont, Showing FontFont, Made with FontFont. These heavily illustrated sections demonstrate the dynamic range of the FontFont typefaces, which have been used for everything from instructions for wearing an Indian sari to the packaging for Viagra. Made with FontFont reads like a Who's Who of contemporary designers and design writers. Contributions from Akira Kobayashi, Rian Hughes, Emily King, Ellen Lupton and Reza Abedini, among others, including FontFont's founders, of course, will educate and inspire anyone with an interest in contemporary graphic design. New.

First American Edition. octavo, cloth in dust jacket. 128pp. Mark Batty Publisher, This book provides the first extensive review of the life and work of George W. Jones (1860-1942) and fills an important gap in the literature of graphic design and printing history. He was one of the most respected and celebrated fine printers of his generation, producing books for notable publishers such as the Limited Editions Club and the Nonesuch Press. Jones entered the printing industry as an apprentice in 1873, and became an independent printer and publisher in London in 1883. In 1911 he established the venture known famously as the Sign of the Dolphin. Jones was appointed the printing advisor to the Linotype organization in 1921, where he was directly responsible for the creation of a number of distinguished typefaces for linecasting, including Granjon, Estienne, Baskerville,a nd Georgian. Jones spent time in the United States and had close contact with leading contemporaries such as William Rudge, Bruce Rogers, W. A. Dwiggins, and others. With more than 40 illustrations, including 8 pages in color. New.

octavo, cloth in dust jacket. Condition: New. First Edition. First Edition. octavo, cloth in dust jacket. (xxii), 383pp. Mark Batty Publisher, From the prospectus: " Daniel Berkley Updike (1860-1941) has been described as 'the most distinguished American printer.' He was one of a handful of highly successful and influential book designers of the twentieth century and proprietor of the Merrymount Press in Boston. The Well-Made Book is a substantial collection of virtually all of Updike's writings on the arts of the book. William S. Peterson has researched, unearthed and assembled this wealth of material - much of which will be new even to those readers who are familiar with Updike's writings. While Updike himself reprinted some of these pieces, until the publication of The Well-Made Book, many of these important and revealing essays and lectures have remained buried in obscure period periodicals and pamphlets and some of Updike's writing featured in this book appears here for the first time, having never been published before in any form." With 31 full- page illustrations, many in two colors. Prof. Peterson has edited, annotated, and provided a scholarly introduction.
