Hodder & Stoughton resumed publishing gift books w/illustrious artistic design, decoration and fine bindings in effort to resume this genre following World War I. Considered one of Hodder & Stoughton's very best designs from the Golden Age of Illustration, and in the most rare and desirable oversize form. Kay Rasmus Nielsen is regarded, with Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac, as a master of gift book illustration. He was born in Copenhagen of distinguished theatrical parents in 1886. In 1904, after considering a medical career, he left for Paris to pursue his passion for art, studying under J. P. Laurens at the Académie Julian. His greatest influences as a student were the Japanese woodcuts of Hokusai and Utamaro, and the black and white decorative line work of Aubrey Beardsley. He was lured from the profession of book illustration by Walt Disney, for whom he became an animator in 1939. Nielsen remained in Hollywood working as an actor, director, designer and muralist until passing in 1957.
