Octavo, red boards (hardcover), gilt letters, 384 pp. Fine in a Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: Once again Tony Pollard and Neil Oliver delve beneath the surface of major British battle sites to reveal the extraordinary finds -- hidden under our feet for decades and even centuries -- that provide a fascinating archaeology of warfare in Britain. As respected pioneers in the new discipline of battlefield archaeology they show us how, by opening our eyes to the landscape in which major battles occurred, we can uncover evidence that helps us understand the true course of a conflict -- sometimes even contradicting the historical account. By reading the ground as well as history books, Neil and Tony offer us new perspectives on the nature of conflict. Here, they examine the sites of six major battles: Bannockburn, Sedgemoor, Edgehill, Killiecrankie, RAF Hornchurch (the battle of Britain, 1940), and the big guns at Dover and Calais in the Second World War. For each site under investigation, they provide a clear understanding of the build-up to each battle. The personalities, armies, weapons, and tactics involved are thoroughly detailed; archaeological techniques and ground-breaking scientific applications are explained; and the artefacts discovered are used to answer key historical questions. Military History, British History, Archaeology, Archeology, Warfare. bslic.

Mass-market paperback. Diebel, John (cover illustration) (illustrator). 248, [8] p. 21 cm. From Wikipedia: "Herbert Ernest Bates, CBE (16 May 1905 29 January 1974), better known as H. E. Bates, was an English writer and author. Bates was a great lover of the countryside and this was exemplified in two volumes of essays entitled Through the Woods and Down the River. During World War II he was commissioned into the RAF solely to write short stories. The Air Ministry realized that the populace was less concerned with facts and figures about the war than it was with reading about those who were fighting it. The stories were originally published in the News Chronicle under the pseudonym of Flying Officer X. Later they were published in book form as The Greatest People in the World and Other Stories and How Sleep the Brave and Other Stories. Following a posting to the Far East, this was followed by two novels about Burma, The Purple Plain in 1947 and The Jacaranda Tree, and one set in India, The Scarlet Sword." From Wikipedia: "The Purple Plain is a 1954 British war film, directed by Robert Parrish, with Gregory Peck playing a Canadian pilot serving in the Royal Air Force in Burma in the closing months of the World War II, who is battling with depression after having lost his wife. It was nominated for two BAFTA awards. Bill Forrester (Gregory Peck), a Canadian pilot serving in the Royal Air Force in Burma, flying de Havilland Mosquito, a two-seat fighter-bomber. Forrester is emotionally distraught after losing his new wife in the Blitz in London and has become self destructive, seeking to end his life in action. "You'd think that would be easy in a war", he explains to a Burmese woman, Anna, "but I just kept getting medals instead." With Anna's support, Bill begins to recover his emotional stability. Forrester and his new navigator, Carrington, on a routine non-combat flight to Myitkyina, with Flight Lieutenant Blore as passenger in the Mosquito's bomb bay, because of an engine fire, is forced to go down in a remote desert area of Burma's central plain controlled by the Japanese. As the three men struggle to survive in the hostile environment, the self-destructive Bill finally realizes that he can depend on support from others and that he may have someone to live for. Blore, however, abandons them to attempt to return to the crash site and commits suicide." Fair. fair. Cover has been reinforced inside back and front. Tear at bottom of spine. Cover has some wear and soiling. Presumed first Penguin Books paperback edition/first ptg.
