Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Slight wear. Crisp hardcover.; Note: At head of title: Engineering Foundation Conference. "Co-sponsored by the National Science Foundation, TMS and the Mineral Industry Waste Treatment and Recovery Generic Center." "Living and killed organisms, particularly microorganisms, and extracellular products derived from the organisms are increasingly finding use in minerals engineering. Goals include both enhancement of mineral processing/hydrometallurgical operations and remediation of mineral industry wastes. Some of the applications, such as biologically assisted leaching of sulfide ores and biooxidation of refractory gold ores, are well established commercial processes used around the world. Others, such as the use of organisms for the removal of heavy metal ions from dilute aqueous streams, are nearing commercial application. Many other uses of microorganisms and their derivatives are potentially possible. These include use of microorganisms in flocculation or flotation of minerals, remediation of organics potentially discharged from mineral engineering operations, degradation of cyanide, the recovery of bitumen from heavy oil reservoirs and tar sands qnd the solubilization of lignites and low rank coals. In order to fully exploit these many possible uses of organisms and their derivatives, extensive fundamental and applied research work exploring the fundamentals, potential and practicality of the various possible uses of microorganisms in mineral engineering should be vigorously pursued." - Overview abstract.; xii, 498 pages.

The Symposium on Materials for Spallation Neutron Sources, held in four sessions on February 10-12, 1997, in conjunctions with the 1997 TMS Annual Meeting, was the first symposium on this topic to be held under the aegis of TMS. It was sponsored by the Nuclear Materials Committee of the Structural Materials Division. The term "spallation", used in a nuclear context, appears to have been coined by Glenn Seaborg in a short 1947 article in Chemical and Engineering News, and it has been known since about that time that several items of spallation neutrons cab be produced when a 1-2 GeV proton strikes a heavy nucleus. But, it was only relatively recently then--with advances in accelerator technology--that this copious source of neutrons began to be applied in several important ways. One significant application of spallation neutrons is for neutron scattering and diffraction research facilities. Another major application of spallation neutrons sources was for accelerator production of tritium. Other applications may subsequently be developed. The Symposium addressed Radiation Effects, Corrosion, and Neutronics. Spallation is a process in which fragments of material (spall) are ejected from a body due to impact or stress. In nuclear physics, spallation is the process in which a heavy nucleus emits numerous nucleons as a result of being hit by a high-energy particle, thus greatly reducing its atomic weight. The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) is a professional society that connects minerals, metals, and materials scientists and engineers who work in industry, academia, and government positions around the world. They create networking, publication, and professional development opportunities by convening international conferences, publishing books and journals, administering awards, conducting short courses and training, and developing standards for the professions they serve. TMS is committed to advancing diversity in the minerals, metals, and materials professions, and to promoting an inclusive professional culture that welcomes and engages all who seek to contribute to the field. TMS recognizes that a diverse minerals, metals, and materials workforce is critical to ensuring that all viewpoints, perspectives, and talents are brought to bear in addressing complex science and engineering challenges.
