Glossy illustrated paper covers have light bumping to edges and corners and light overall scuffing. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. NOT Ex-library. NO remainder marks. Full color illustrations throughout. [excerpts from preface] Each summer the Monhegan Museum mounts a special exhibition in its primary art galleries. . . Our aim in presenting such varied exhibitions is, over time, to convey the exceptional range of high quality work that has been created on, or at least inspired by, this remarkable island during the past 150 years. Some of the paintings are by artists whose work is familiar to many of our visitors, while others are by excellent artists whose work has received less attention in the art world. Still, it all helps to tell the story of one of the most important summer art colonies in the history of American Art. Because Monhegan has been such a vigorous art colony, we have been able to present extraordinary exhibitions year after year. We use works from the museum's extensive collection as well as works that are loaned by members of the Monhegan community. This year we have another amazing exhibition, one that depicts life on the island, year-round, during the period from 1920 to 1950. That was a period in which several artists lived year-round on the island for some number of years and others spent long "summer seasons" year after year. Many of these artists were themselves rugged individualists who took great delight in using their paint to tell the story of the hard working people of Monhegan and the difficult conditions within which they frequently did their work. The current exhibition presents that story, and we hope you enjoy it.
