Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. Bob Reece (illustrator). 196 pp., illustrations. Charles Macaskie was one of North Borneo's most successful colonial officials. Arriving from England as a Cadet in 1910, he served briefly at Tambunan and Papar before embarking on a career that took him into almost every area of administration, culminating in his appointment as Chief Justice in 1934 and Deputy Governor in 1936. Luckily avoiding imprisonment by the Japanese, he spent the first part of the war in Australia before serving in the Borneo Planning Unit in Londin and after liberation as Chief Civil Affairs Officer for Borneo at Labuan. After the war, he headed the War Damages Commission for Borneo at Jesselton before retiring to become an apple farmer at Stanthorpe in Queensland. In 1946 he had married Doris Cole Adams whose husband, Bernard, died in BAtu Lintang prison camp, Kuching, only weeks before liberation. Thanks to Macaskie's retirement appointment as visiting British Judge, they were able to spend more time in the New Hebrides and other parts of the Pacific. In his memoirs, Macaskie reveals himself as a dedicated colonial administrator with a good sense of humour and a talent for diplomacy. This was to stand him in good stead during the difficult days in Australia in early 1945 when Colonel A.A. ('Alf') Conlon was attempting to use the British Borneo Civil Affairs Unit (BBCAU) as a means of securing Australian control over the Borneo territories under the United Nations. 0.0.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. 247 pp., illustrations, bibliography, index. Believe it or not, this is the only book ever written about the orchids of Sulawesi. More than one century has passed since J. J. Smith published Die Orchiden von Ambon, and in that time books have been written about orchids in Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, the Philippines, New Guinea. in fact, all the major territories and islands except Sulawesi. This is quite an astonishing omission, because Sulawesi lies right in the heart of the region. It is the cross-roads of S. E. Asia, in a botanic and zoological sense. It is the place where the plants (and animals) from three totally different regions meet, mingle and interact. Sulawesi is unique, and so are many of its orchids. Bulbophyllum, with approximately 1900-2000 specis, is the largest orchid genus in the world. Although it can be found in tropical America and Africa, the majority of the species occur in S. E. Asia, and it is only here that the genus shows the full range of its diversity. This book is a scientific revision of the 123 species and 4 subspecies of Bulbophyllum that are found in Sulawesi. It contains descriptions of all 127 taxa, and illustrates the majority of them with colour photographs, line drawings, or both. The book is organised into sections according to the latest developments in orchid taxonomy; 24 Bulbophyllum sections are represented in Sulawesi. Keys to the sections and species are provided. There is a chapter on the biogeography of Sulawesi (which helps explain why the island is so unique) and chapters dealing with the island's forests and orchid habitats. Unlike many orchid books which are dependent on recycling old material, Bublophyllum of Sulawesi is the product of original research and fieldwork. This is how 60 of the species in this book (an astonishingly high 47% of the total) came to be discovered during the course of this investigation.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 715 pp., illustrations, diagrams, bibliography, index. The cultivation and medicinal use of orchids are Chinese traditions that date back millennia, but scientific documentation of southeast China's native orchids commenced with the establishment of European trade bases at Macau in the 16th Century and at Guangzhou in the 18th Century. João de Loureiro, a Portuguese missionary, collected Pecteillis susannae and Spiranthes sinensis during his visit to these enclaves from 1779-1782 and John Dampier Parks, a collector for the Horticultural Society of London, sent back specimens of Coelogyne fimbriata and Robiquetia succisa from the region in the 1820s. The earliest survey of orchids on Hong Kong Island is attributed to Dr. Clarke Abel, naturalist abord HMS Alceste during Lord Amherst's ill-fated diplomatic mission to the court of the Qing Dynast in 1816, when he botanised the lower slopes of what was to become know as Mt. Victoria. The island was formally ceded to the United Kingdom following the Treaty of Nanking in 1842, and the Kowloon Peninsula and New Territories were added to the colony in 1860 and 1898 respectively. A century of exploration ensued: over 40 new orchids were named from plants collected within the territory, and even in the short period that has elapsed since its return to Chinese rule, Hong Kong's narrow valleys and precipitous summits have continued to yield novelties. Collabiam chinense and Vanilla schnzhenica were added to the list of native orchids as recently as 1998. In total, 126 species and varieties representing all five orchid subfamilies have been recorded from Hong Kong, a staggering figure given its diminutive size. Hong Kong's landscape has changed dramatically throughout its history, and emphasis is increasingly placed on developing an understanding of the plants' ecology in order to ensure their persistence for future generations. This book provides descriptions and discusses the discovery of all the native species, and the conservation status of each is assessed.
