PAPERBACK, attractive unused copy. small black remainder dot on top foredge. WILLIAMS, C. K. Wait. New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2010, 125pp., . Wait finds C.K. Williams by turns ruminative, stalked by "the conscience-beast, who harries me," and "riven by idiot vigor, voracious as the youth I was for whom everything was going too slowly, too slowly." Poems about animals and rural life are set hard by poems about shrapnel in Iraq and sudden desire on the Paris Métro; grateful invocations of Herbert and Hopkins give way to fierce negotiations with the shades of Coleridge, Dostoevsky, and Celan. What the poems share is their setting in the cool, spacious, spotlit, book-lined place that is Williams's consciousness, a place whose workings he has rendered for fifty years with inimitable candor and style. Hardcover first edition - First printing. Award-winning English poet's first collection selected for publication in the US. Includes poems from his earlier works - "The Boy from the Chemist is Here to See You" and "The Ice Age" and "Field Recordings" and "Tramp in Flames" - as well as some new poems. When this was issued, the Economist commented "For those who believe poetry is too staid to comment on normal life, Paul Farley's work is a breath of fresh air. His poems contain heapings of pop culture, with layers upon layers of references such as treacle, CCTV, burning monks. Using humour and rhythm to organise the torrent of his words, he brings chaos to order and then order out of chaos. 'The Atlantic Tunnel', his latest collection, makes for a fine introduction to the Liverpudlian poet, whose ascent in Britain was swift upon the publication of his first book of poems, 'The Boy from the Chemist is Here to See You', in 1998. " Farley's long list of awards include the Whitbread, Forward Poetry Prize, E.M. Forster and more. 143 pp. Fine in fine dust jacket (a new copy.).
